"It is unethical, though."

All the arroagnt better than thou judgement in this thread is unethical.

While the trailers and preview do look amazing, the previous title in this series was not good at all ,so my expectations are low. Maybe it'll even turn out to be as good as they say.

The last Red Dead was part of some kind of Capcom deal. The game was also more of a linear shooter. The only connection the two games seem to have is the dead-eye targetting system.

Same devs. That's enough reason for me to be skeptical.

That's kinda my feelings as well. Really didn't like the first game.

I've been playing Episodes from Liberty City (PC version) for the last week and it's excellent. Because of this, I started to seek info about Red Dead Redemption and I have to admit that videos are beautiful. Especially how they modeled horses and other animals. It's shame that they choose to release game only for consoles (at least for now). I love the open world mission based games and while I'm one of those who think that Wild West game is financial suicide, I hope that Rockstar will prove me wrong.

R* is better called R****, IMO. They have made a fortune of off one game: GTA. RDR is GTA4 with a skin from what I've heard. Not worth $60, considering GTA4 blew.

In 7th grade, I teach the students how Chuck Norris took down the Roman Empire, so it is good that you are starting early on this curriculum.

To me the thing that killed GTA IV was the "more realistic" driving, thereby singlehandedly killing the most fun thing (insane driving!) that made GTA III, VC and SA so much fun. I seriouly hope they go back on that if they make another GTA, otherwise they lost me as a customer.

I can't believe anyone actually though that an improvement... what have you guys been doing during the previous 3 GTA games. Certainly some 6 star police chases right? Are they any fun at all in GTA IV? Nope...? My point exactly.

Also sad they never released Midnight Club III on the PC :sorcerer:.

I agree that that is such a stupid idiotic pathetic garbage hateful retarded scumbag evil satanic nazi like term ever created. At least top 5.

I stopped to buy and read any reviews, when there started to be common practice, that the text of the review was completely out of touch with final score... When you read review, which is stating in every paragraph that game is mediocre, and you get at the end score of 9/10, you know there is something fishy in the air...

That sounds like a reason to ignore the score, not to stop reading reviews. So long as the actual text is accurate, it can supply useful information.

I don't trust the shifty low rent bastards, but I have to admt that if I see a game with a rack of 95%s on the back I think 'oh well, can't be too bad'. Hands up those who don't?

Sure, any game with stellar reviews is going to be solid. The big thing is having a clear grasp of what your tastes are and how they might conflict with a reviewer.

I've usually already decided to buy (or not buy) a game before I ever see the box, anymore.

Oblivion had a rack of 95's. Back, front and all over. Greatest crpg ever. And so forth.

hmm.

Oh, right. Also Bioshock.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Bioshock was overrated but not a bad game by any shot.

As for Oblivion.. uhm.. -_-

Both Bioshock and Oblivion were very solid, playable games. These things come down to taste.

Also, both those games were rather engaging out of the box. It took me about a dozen hours to start really seeing the flaws. Reviewers have deadlines that they have to meet, so I can understand the high reviews from that perspective. It's really just a flawed industry, the whole games review publications. I don't blame the the writers for the scoring system, although the terrible writing is their burden to bear.

I can attest to Oblivion being very difficult to review. I had the honour of doing it for our magazine back then. When you first start the game and you learn about the actual working sneak mechanics, the character progression, the physics enabled combat (with neat traps and stuff), you're only a few minutes into the game, but it looks splendid. Then you're let out of the starting dungeon and you're basically overwhelmed by the beauty of the world, the size of the world and the freedom you're given.

I think I played around with the game for 30 hours (!) before I began pinpointing the major flaws. All in all I spent over 100 hours in Oblivion, with and without mods. I spent around 60 hours in Risen, a game that I loved.

It took a while to get used to it, but once I did I honestly found the rampages/chases/cop harassment far more fun in GTA IV with the new car physics and that is saying a lot considering how much I liked it in previous GTAs. High speed crashes that send Niko/Johnny/Luis out of the window never get old. -_-

I certainly agree that LIKING a game comes down to taste, but saying it's a GOOD game? That's not so cut and dried.

Example: (WHich I've used before on this forum)

I love Godzilla vs The Smog Monster. Love. I've rented it many times and watch it whenever it comes on. I would prefer to watch it over many other movies, such as The Godfather or 2001 or The Seven Samurai.

But, since I love it can I say it's the Greatest Movie Ever? Or even a good movie? No, of course not. What I can say is I like a crappy movie. For whatever reason.

Oblivion is a crappy game. People may like it, which is cool, but it's still a crappy game.

Bioshock was overrated but not a bad game by any shot.

It tries harder at some things that other games of its sort do, I agree, and that probably desrves some credit. But the fps/rpg gameplay is very poorly done.

edit: What were you angry about mkreku? I can't see anything in the last few posts that would inspire anger.

Yes, the ignoring of the scores was the first step, but at some point, even the text became less and less accurate about description of the games :)

So the best way how to deal with buying games nowaday, is to wait few weeks after release, to get reviews from the fansites and forums, like this one... that way i'm yet to be dissapointed...

Use Attack of the Clones in your example instead of some extremely low-budget movie and it might work.

I still feel conned whenever I notice GTAIV on my shelf. Never ever have I encountered a game that I felt so unworthy of its hype and reviews. Different strokes, I guess, but the last time I buy a game that doesn't interest me just based on the hype (and I liked Vice City!)

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

GTA 4 was my first and only GTA game that I played and I was quite impressed with it. Never finished it though because of that stupid car race I couldn't win.

A lot of people felt like GTA4 was a let down because previous installments had had a much quirkier sense of humor about them, and quite a few more activities to them than what we find in 4. Partially the cuts were due to the new engine, but I don't understand why it's so bipolar in tone, one minute you've got brucie being the idiot that he is, the next niko's griping about how hard life is and how he's killed people, sold people etc.

That bipolar style is what GTA's are all about. Ok, Vice City is really over the top but it's because whole Scarface/Miami Vice thing is so ridiculous in the first place. And 80's is probably most campy decade in modern history and it's one of those reasons why I love it so much :sorcerer:

At first I hated GTA 4 driving physics but then I got used to 'em and now I love 'em. I rarely crash anymore, I can powerslide, drift and do all kinds of weird and wonderful things with different vehicles. Personally I think Rockstar overestimated the skill of the majority of the players but I'm damn happy that for once it's that way. Then again, GTA 4 is AAA+ game and pissing off numerous casual gamers can't be a good thing. Red Red Redemption might lose some sales because of that (among many other things like unpopular time frame for the setting and low quality IP ).
