Which films should I bother with?

Featured Replies

I've never actually watched an Aliens movie. Which ones would actually be worth my while re: showing the Aliens universe while also actually being a good fim? From what I gather, Alien and Aliens should be on my list. Should I bother at all with the others?

Personal opinion.

Alien 3 is a movie that was plagued with production problems which resulted into a widely acknowledged terrible movie.

Alien Ressurection is a movie that seems so terribly out of place with the Alien setting to take it seriously.

I will simply say to just stick with Alien and Aliens.

If you like a more horror/suspense oriented film go with Alien.

If you want a more action/suspense oriented film go with Aliens

The third film mirrors the first film with a more horror/suspense plot with an isolated locale.

The fourth film mirrors the second film with a more action/suspense plot with lots of gunplay.

While I've watched and enjoyed all four films for what they are, I'd have a tough time arguing that Alien and Aliens aren't the better two films (and IMO Alien the best of the four).

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

Alien and Aliens are classics. The other two didn't happen. They don't really exist. They're some ****ty fan-fiction that someone posted somewhere. They're not cannon, not watchable, and should only be watched if you're constipated because they will make you take the biggest **** of your life.

Eh, I still enjoyed A:R and A3 had its moments.

Not great cinema, necessarily, but not awful IMO.

My post was more strongly worded and thus more true.

Alien 3 is one of David Fincher's worst movies.

David Fincher's worst movies are superior to the vast majority of films released in theaters every year.

Alien: Resurrection is terrible garbage in which a genetically-resurrected Ripalien sinks a no-look three pointer while the cast of the Crow and Girl Interrupted reference Wal-Mart and engage in other verisimilitude-breaking activities. All of this canon-stomping collision of Firefly with a French director channeling the worst stylistic components of Robert Rodriguez is topped off with one of the most tastelessly disturbing sequences in a sci-fi film, the only saving grace of which is that the hermaphroditism originally rendered for the sequences was digitally removed prior to the film's release.

Watch Alien and Aliens over-and-over. Watch Alien 3 sometimes, but stick to the special edition cut which is much better. Don't bother with Alien: Resurrection unless you are desperate.

That is all.

First two go without saying but i liked the third also. It really does have its moments.

I think actually most people hate it because it killed Ripley.

For the fourth movie i would go with Monty`s description as absolutely accurate.

Personally I still rank Alien 3 below Alien: Resurrection. To me Alien 3 comes close to being boring (the worst sin a film can make), something that can't be said about A:R.

This movie is so bad, the entire thing is posted on youtube, and there seems to be no great movement to take it down. That's how bad it is.

The Breakdown Begins this May.

I hold the very unpopular opinion that Alien 3 is a better movie than Aliens.

The part I enjoy most about Resurrection is the laser whisky cube. I suppose it's a sad thing that such a tiny event in that movie is my favourite.

I agree that the first 2 are the best, but I also think that perhaps you should just start at the 1st film, and watch them all. That way you can make up your mind for yourself. :( As you do, try to take each film by itself, and not as a whole. Then the 3 and 4th films don't seem so bad.

Check out my KOTOR fan vids on YouTube. And no, they're not of legos.

But at least Ressurection had Ron Perlman, so give it some credit at least!

Wow, very well said, 100% on target with everything, glad your one of the developers, listen to this man!

By the way, IMHO, Alien is a 10/10, Aliens is a 9.9/10, Alien 3 Special Edition a 7, Aliens Res a 6.5. Without the stupid gross crap and newborn its a 7 too. Without a Ripalien it would have scored higher. Decent cast too and great location (Star Ship).

A:R is actually very faithful to the Geiger aesthetic, much moreso than any of the other films.

But then, there's a reason Geiger wasn't fully involved in the movies.

Those CGI extra glossy Aliens sucked hard.

Yeah, ok. I'll watch the first two and then see from there.

If they suck, I'll kill you, JE Sawyer

Alien is an absolute masterpiece, so if you don't like it, you suck. (or you don't like scary movies)

Alien 3 is at least much more well-acted than Aliens. A bunch of great British actors put to waste, really.
