Morgoth Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 (edited) Somebody still didn't respond to my question, so copy&paste again: How's the writing quality of TW? I somewhere read a line "...suck dwarf ****"... I mean, that's not the sort of dialog I want to have in an RPG, nor actually expecting from a medieval fantasy setting. Unless it's something like Gothic where everyone responds like a pissed off brat, I expect a certain standard. Edited November 2, 2007 by Morgoth Rain makes everything better.
Xard Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 I can't answer to that either, but many reviewers have said it has good dialogue and so codex guys says too How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them. - OverPowered Godzilla (OPG)
Morgoth Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 (edited) I can't answer to that either, but many reviewers have said it has good dialogue and so codex guys says too Once the Codex "decides" that a game is worthwhile, they'll only drool positively about it. But that stills says nothing about the actual writing quality. But then again, I currently don't have time for such a huge, involving game anyway. I'm probably getting it early next year, when it is cheaper over Ebay, and when more patches have been released. In the meantime I'll just stick with Hellgate London, a game I can quickly enter, play and quit anytime and anywhere....lest to threat real life priorities. Now if I only would believe what I just wrote.... Edited November 2, 2007 by Morgoth Rain makes everything better.
Xard Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 *shrug* They were absolutely right about MotB, and my "the" gaming magazine (aka the one that has trustworthy, quite good reviewers) gave it 88/100 also remarking good dialogue. Personally I don't know what to believe. But since so many people has said so it can't be all bad How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them. - OverPowered Godzilla (OPG)
Morgoth Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 I'll just wait for the Codex review. HA! No seriously, it was also the reason why I eventually picked up MOTB. Rain makes everything better.
Tale Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Sometimes I think Sand must be contagious. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."

Tale Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Who is this mysterious Sand you're speaking of again? You know, the guy whose handle on this forum just happens to coincide with a famous insult from Eric Cartman for people who complain alot. Who will comment on how he's "skeptical" or otherwise won't buy a game, but spends 50 posts reiterating that fact so it seems more like he's justifying his decision (publicly, no less) than anything else. That guy. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Morgoth Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Oh yeah that NWN loving Bioware fanboy. Now I remember.... And what the hell has that to do with me? Rain makes everything better.
Tale Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 (edited) Just looking out for you. Maybe you're coming down with a slight fever. Have you been feeling overly opinionated with an absolute desire to share it with everyone online you possibly can? Because those are symptoms. Though, some symptoms do overlap with another common disorder. Boredom. It's a horrible and absolutely debilitating disease I hope never to have. He was soooooooo sweet! Sweet....Sweet...SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!! But I really feel fine nonetheless, thanks for asking. Edited November 2, 2007 by Morgoth Rain makes everything better.
Starwars Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 I've only played briefly, but I think the writing is not very good so far. You can sort of sense some great things there, but I believe a lot of it was lost in the translation to English (wish I understood Polish). However, stuff like the profanity is actually kinda refreshing once you get past the initial "culture shock" so to speak. Some of the dialogues fly all over the place, while others have a better flow to them. Voiceacting goes up and down as well, but is decent most of the time. I've not encountered any hilariously bad moments yet (remember the minions of Black Garius when they're preparing the ritual, hahaha). So far it looks like a good game, though I doubt it will be something that will stay with me after a few years. I tend to not like action-RPGs a lot though, so the fact I'm still playing and enjoying this one is a good sign for me. The games visuals are outstanding I think, and the game actually performs *really* well. The setting seems to be really 'mucky' and harsh (haven't had any experience with the books myself), which is again extremely refreshing. I can't believe some reviewer actually criticized the game for making the player sometimes choose between two 'lesser evil' choices. The trouble performance-wise is the aforementioned loading times which really grates on me unfortunately. I'm still in the early stages of the game, but supposedly it gets a lot better later on. Collecting quests tend to not be very fun. Listen to my home-made recordings (some original songs, some not): http://www.youtube.c...low=grid&view=0
roshan Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 I don't why it isn't released in Sweden, but I do know that it apparently has been released in Russia for some odd reason. I do know that in Europe new games are released at the end of the week e.g. on Fridays so that's why The Witcher will be released on Friday the 26th of October 2007. In the US new games are released on Tuesday, so that's why The Witcher will be released on the 30th of October 2007. The codex reviews, so far, seems harsh, but I've seen some of the videos as well as followed the game's development somewhat closely. Initially I wasn't going to buy this game, but eventually I will one day. The game's story seem amazing as well as the settings in the games. They are very unique and innovative, in the truest senses of these words The Codex has a habit of taking everything to pieces with their sharp teeth. If it still stands, then they like & cherish is forever - just like they've done with Planescape: Torment. And just like they're doing today, with Mask of the Betrayer. I wouldn't worry too much about the Codex's reviews, though.... Having read the thread on Witcher in the Codex, it seems that the opinion on the game generally ranges from very good to top RPG material. People on the Codex say the game is full of bugs. I really hope this will be fixed in the near future... Here's a nice video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7q7ZWStb0w and a comic strip: ? The thread on the Codex seems to say that the game has hardly any bugs and rarely crashes. The load times seem to be the only performance issue. Uhh, actually, it's just Action RPG with pre-generated character. Click click click. But for such this sounds interesting, even though whole "darkness and 'maturity'" for its sake is downright silly. Not too sure about that. Apparently, the game has lots of choices and consequences and combat actually requires a lot of advanced preparation - including purchasing books to learn about monsters, potions and harvestable materials (you cant make potions or acquire ingredients without first learning about them either through books or dialogue). Combat apparently is tactical and hard enough that Codexers like it, despite it involving player skill. Ive read lots of comments on the Codex about the Witcher being real time combat done right. The game sounds really interesting so far, I will probably order a copy as soon as Ive handed in my dissertation this Monday.
roshan Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Gamebanshee has reviewed the Witcher: http://gamebanshee.com/reviews/software/thewitcher1.php It scored a 9.
Hurlshort Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 I picked it up based on the solid reviews. So far it's not running well on my PC. I'm attempting a few tweaks and driver updates. I didn't realize my PC is no longer up to snuff, it's a P4 2.8 Gh with 1.5 gigs of RAM and an ATI 1650 video card, and it's really choking on the Witcher.
Hurlshort Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 It's playing much better after updating my ATI Omega drivers. Very solid so far, but I'm still in what is probably considered the tutorial. The amount of information in the game is staggering, the journal is pretty much an encyclopedia of knowledge. The levelling process is also pretty great, there are a lot of choices. Graphics are great. The camera is taking a bit of getting used to, as is the control scheme. I'm using the mouse only system, and I'm not sure if that's the best choice. Load times are pretty long, but I've never let that keep me from playing a good game. Oh, and I hooked up already, but I guess the US version is censored, because there was no boob action. Shame shame.
Meshugger Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 (edited) I just bought my copy today and it is rated as "18 only", because of....get this: "Violence". Thankfully, the anti-boob-patrol hasn't sunked its claws in the videogame-market in Europe. Volourn Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Bought the game yesterday, and installed it today. Only played for like 5 minutes tops; but all I gotta say is: HAHA! AMNESIA! HAHA! DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
theslug Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 im really considering buying this game today but I'm just not sure I'll like it. More player reviews please. There was a time when I questioned the ability for the schizoid to ever experience genuine happiness, at the very least for a prolonged segment of time. I am no closer to finding the answer, however, it has become apparent that contentment is certainly a realizable goal. I find these results to be adequate, if not pleasing. Unfortunately, connection is another subject entirely. When one has sufficiently examined the mind and their emotional constructs, connection can be easily imitated. More data must be gleaned and further collated before a sufficient judgment can be reached.
Volourn Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 (edited) "They were absolutely right about MotB" Nah. According to them, MOTB is pretty much perfect, and anyone who doesn't think so are morons. P.S. I like MOTB good enough. It's a great expansion. Nothing more, nothing less. Theslug: I'll go into detail of The Witcher sometime in the next few days. Edited November 4, 2007 by Volourn DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
theslug Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Thank you kind sir. I did just find out that Cod 4 comes out in 2 days so I might have to put this one on the back burner, then of course mass effect will come out as Cod 4 novelty wears off. Damn you November. SadExchange Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 (edited) The Europe Edition isn't censored from everything I've read. The US edition is however and that's why I bought my copy from gogamer.com because they offer the imported addition for almost the same price. Oh and for the guy who got the first woman tarot card and it seemed censored, that card is 'censored' for both editions. From then on, the tarot cards show the nudity. From what I hear, the censorship covers the tarot cards and some sexually oriented quests throughout the game. From then on, I've been really enjoying this game thoroughly. It has a heck of an atmosphere that only gets better with each hour you play through. I find the dialogue to be more realistic than most games of its time and the conversations don't seem pushed. The dialogue's 'darkness' fits into the setting. Yes, while running around outside of Vizima, someone said, "Your mothers sucks a dwarf's %@%?" But it was nothing that took away from the game or took me out of my experience. it just fits. Yeah, it does have long load times. I have a AMD 64 3000, 2 GB Ram, and 7600 GT and it runs superbly to say the least. It definitely has had more optimization that the original Aurora Engine for NWN. I just wish people across the net would stop saying that The Witcher is using the same engine as NWN2. Edited November 4, 2007 by SadExchange
Volourn Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 But, it is. That's a fact. They both just have variations/updates/new graphic engines; but the engine is still Aurora. Hence why on the box of the Witcher it states - quite clearly - POWERED by Bioware's Aurora Engine. Game over. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.

Hence why on the box of the Witcher it states - quite clearly - POWERED by Bioware's Aurora Engine. Game over. Well, if that's true, I apologize since I was under the impression that NWN2 used a different engine than NWN1. I thought I read somewhere that obsidian wanted to us the Aurora Engine, but ended up not using it because of running into too many complications between the engine and the upgrades they wanted to have.
Volourn Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 It should be pointed out that the graphics aspect of both TW and NWN2 are ugraded so much that they are basically new (even so much so that Obsidian has a name for their version). DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
