Kaftan Barlast Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 I was just sitting here in scorching summer heat with my body drenched in sweat and I came to think of Christmas and what it means to different people. Christmas in Sweden has nothing do to with anything religious, it is about decorating your home in red&green, presents, food, fun with relatives you cant stand and of course, the annual Disney christmas special at 3pm. We dont even celebrate Christmas on Christmas, but on the 24th.. and we call it "jul" which is a norse word that doesnt really mean anything. Furthermore, everyone is expected to celebrate it regardless of race, colour or creed. It doesnt matter if you're muslim or jew, you WILL give presents and drink Gl DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. If there is no clear indication, asume the post is written in jest. This notification is meant very seriously and its purpouse is to avoid misunderstandings and the consequences thereof. Furthermore; I can not be held accountable for anything I write on these forums since the idea of taking serious responsability for my unserious actions, is an oxymoron in itself. Important: as the following sentence contains many naughty words I warn you not to read it under any circumstances; botty, knickers, wee, erogenous zone, psychiatrist, clitoris, stockings, bosom, poetry reading, dentist, fellatio and the department of agriculture. "I suppose outright stupidity and complete lack of taste could also be considered points of view. "
Tale Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 It's not religious to me nor to most people I know. My extended family inconsistently will say a prayer over meals on Christmas, but that's the full extent of it. As far as I can tell, it's a combination of gross commercialism and an excuse for a family gathering. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Gfted1 Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Christmas isnt religous to my family either. And you Swedes are weird. "I'm your biggest fan, Ill follow you until you love me, Papa"
Krookie Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 My mom used to make us go to Church on Christmas Eve. After that I would go back home and my family would come over and exchange gifts (the one's from Santa came in the morning). So I guess it's sorta religious to me, but it's still about trees, lights, cookies, and fat guys in red suits.
Surreptishus Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 "Jul" is that the same thing as Yule? Christmas here is really a festival that celebrates shopping and turkey. I call it Shurkeyfest. Only 149 days till Shurkeyfest!
Hurlshort Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 It's a tricky question. I had a friend in High School who sent out Capitalism Day Cards instead of Christmas cards. The exchanging of gifts during the winter season has been tied by the church to the birth of Jesus, even though the practice is much older It's good advertising by the church to do so, which is what any religion needs to spread. But there is a reason I see it as a fitting time to bring up religion. It's a time spent with family and friends, it's a time of sharing and appreciation for one another. It can be a dark and cold time if spent alone. It's a spiritual time in my eyes. It's when I am most aware of how lucky I am to have people around me that I care about, and that care about me. For me, it's hard not to believe in God when I'm surrounded by that warmth.
thepixiesrock Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 I think Christmas is what you make it. If you want to see it as a religious holiday, then it is one. If you want to see it as an over-comercialized, meaningless holiday created by big companies and the media, orchestrated just so they can squeeze the last few bucks out of you and every other mindless gear slave of the corporate machine, then it will be. If you just see it as a time to get together with family, and exchange gifts with them because they mean a lot to you, then that's what it will be. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the galaxy. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips. I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my viens. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk, and free throw. I am there.
Atreides Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 It's religious in the sense I remember what it's about and give Happy B'days and thanks. Also it's about family getting together. Spreading beauty with my katana.
Calax Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 the only religion in Christmas any more is the fact that you can go celebrate a prophet at midnight if you wanna. Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.
seejai Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 well originally it was a roman holiday i think... and then it was about jesus. its interesting how its changed so much. its religious to me. well i try to make it. i dont think ppl should get offended if someone wants to make it religioius. and not every one does "She was short, she was furry, she was loud, and she was determined to sell him a melon"- random passage from Spector of the Past by Timothy Zahn
Blarghagh Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 (edited) To me, Christmas is a winter celebration that was altered slightly for some due to a culture-shift. The whole religious thing doesn't bother me. I have no problem believing Jesus Christ was born around that time anyway (anything else to do with him though? Fairy tales.) Sand Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 I don't celebrate the holidays. Krookie Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Christmas and Easter are the only times that my entire family gets together, so I guess that means something.
Oerwinde Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Not religious to me. The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
Aram Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 (edited) Well, I do Christmas, but I'm an atheist, so I suppose the answer must be no. I had a friend in High School who sent out Capitalism Day Cards instead of Christmas cards. What a dork. Edited July 3, 2007 by Aram
Tale Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 I once considered handing out "Happy Native Oppression Day" cards on Thanksgiving. Because I felt like being controversial. Oh, back when I was young, before my premature grey... "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."

Walsingham Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 As Sando knows I have become more sentimental and sprirtual about Christmas over the years. For me its a damn good excuse to be nice to people without anyone thinking you're mental. I loathe and despise the commercialism. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.
Pidesco Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Christmas is the Christian version of Winter solstice celebrations . It's not on the right date, I know, but who cares. Anyway, the actual source that Christianity got Christmas day from was, I believe, Roman Mithraism, which was all the rage way back when Christianity was an up and coming religion. The 25th of December was Mithras' birthday. Of course, nowadays it's just about the money and the gifts. "My hovercraft is full of eels!" - Hungarian tourist I am Dan Quayle of the Romans. Laozi Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 I guess I get caught up in the whole Christmas thing for awhile, but now that it last so long about mid-December I start really getting agitated. Then it takes a careful mixture of booze and solitude to get me the rest of the way through. Its not totally like that the whole time, but alot of days. People laugh when I say that I think a jellyfish is one of the most beautiful things in the world. What they don't understand is, I mean a jellyfish with long, blond hair.
seejai Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 thats sad. i like christmas. "She was short, she was furry, she was loud, and she was determined to sell him a melon"- random passage from Spector of the Past by Timothy Zahn
