Meshugger
And a video with subpar quality! Linky! I'm fascinated how id keeps revealing their engines at Mac/Apple events. They did that with Doom 3, too. Macs hate DirectX and love OpenGL. Macs are nowadays pretty powerful in terms of hardware. Carmack loves OpenGL and needs the horsepower to show off his new engine, thus a Mac "Some men see things as they are and say why?""I dream things that never were and say why not?"- George Bernard Shaw"Hope in reality is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man."- Friedrich Nietzsche "The amount of energy necessary to refute bull**** is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it." - Some guy
mkreku
I'm impressed by Carmack's ability to not lock himself into one dominant OS. He keeps supporting the Mac OS/Linux world by not only developing his games for the monopolistic Direct X world. I LOVE IT!! Doesn't exactly hurt that the guy is a pretty good programmer either.. Apparently the technique used (ClipMaps) isn't brand new: http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~gfx/Courses/20...ing/Clipmap.pdf But it's really interesting! @\NightandtheShape/@
Doesn't exactly hurt that the guy is a pretty good programmer either.. He's a bit more than pretty good... Carmack is one of the best programmers the computer games industry has seen to date. Carmack and Sweeny are the two names that spring to mind when I think of 3D engines and the top of the game... The hell, Crytek 2.0 will eventually get ported to consoles, too. I only care for engines that other developers bother using. If only one game gets released using it (and then a bunch of crappy console spinoffs), then I could really care less about it. Source > * Unreal a close second. mkreku
Not to be anal or anything, but the engine's name is CryENGINE 2, made by the company Crytek. There's no such thing as Crytek 2.0.
