Morgoth Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Sorry Bio, more originality next time, please. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don Rain makes everything better.
Musopticon? Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 I'd like to hear your view on what is a "more finely crafted setting". I know where you are coming from with your view of SW and I agree. We both agree that any talk of characters is a bit premature, no? kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. I had to fight against blood thirsty wolves and rabid penguins to get my food. Morgoth Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Eh? Condom armor wearing reptile? Condom Armor?!?!? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You know what a Condom is? You know what an Armour is? Now use your imagination Hades! Rain makes everything better.
thepixiesrock Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 ME seems to go a similar path: Space hamsters, reptilian warriors put into condom-armour and woman with integrated bike-helmets make as much sense as the Star Wars universe --> Nada. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Wow... We both agree that any talk of characters is a bit premature, no? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You think I just could describe a setting with a few sentences? Forget it. I'm just trying to say that Sci-Fi is a genre of experiments, and why, for example, don't use devs modern day or near-future issues (environment-catastrophes, more and more demolation of welfare state, capitalism, conspiracies, thoughts about advantages/disadvantages of growing megacities etc etc) as some direction? Why has it always to be in space with aliens? Deus Ex has shown that it hasn't always to be aliens in space. And green chicks. Rain makes everything better.

Musopticon? Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Well, Mass Effect is obviously space opera. Big in space with aliens is pretty much the epitomal state of space opera. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. I had to fight against blood thirsty wolves and rabid penguins to get my food. mkreku Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 For the record, I thought it reminded me an awful lot of Star Wars too. At least of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
Musopticon? Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 When has a new Bioware game not reminded you of their previous games? Actually, I take that back. NWN never reminded me of BG. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. I had to fight against blood thirsty wolves and rabid penguins to get my food. DemonKing Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 It looks good - but it definitely appears to be a more advanced version of the KOTOR engine, and with that and the space opera setting, it does appear to be a bit of a SW rip-off. I'm not unhappy that they're giving the main character a voice - it will be interesting to see how it turns out. Still probably won't motivate me to buy an XBOX 360 though - given that a PC version will probably be released eventually once the MS exclusivity clause wears off (although I wonder why MS make XBOX exclusive games given that almost all PC games require their OS to work anyway).
GhostofAnakin Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Won't most space opera style games remind somewhat of Star Wars? My point? Don't really have one. Just thought I'd throw that random question out there. Go Mass Effect! "Console exclusive is such a harsh word." - Darque"Console exclusive is two words Darque." - Nartwak (in response to Darque's observation)
Musopticon? Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Since SW has all the ahllmarks of space opera, that's pretty unavoidable. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. Volourn Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 So, it has similarites to SW. big friggin' woop. That's not surprising itself consideirng BIO has stated quite clearly that one of the biug things about ME is that they want tot ake advanatge of their work on KOTOR, and improve upon it. By the way, are we sure that the gal with the 'helmet head' isn't actually a human ot another alien wearing a helmet? BIO has said that anything you put on your character shows up on the character model. So, please don't get toof ar. I'm not a big SW fans myself. It's ok; but I much prefer Star Trek the other popular Space Opera. In fact, I didn't even bother with paying much attention to KOTOR until people started spazzing over the x-box version. And, I still find KOTOR overrated. ME is likely to be 1 million % percent better. The land vehicle dune buggy thing alone proves this. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.

Volourn Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 (edited) Because it is Original Intellectual Properties. Just because it has similarites doesn't mean it's the same. ie. IWD to BG. Coke to Pepsi. Spears to Madonna. US to Britain. D&D to LOTR. SW to ST. And, on, and on, and on. Edited July 19, 2006 by Volourn DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
