My mother-in-law is absolutely terrified that Russia will invade Estonia. They believe that when Trump gets reelected he won't commit the US to defending their tiny and largely unknown NATO ally against Russia.

Not an uncommon fear, does seem like that'd end NATO (article 5 because some towers got dropped but not The Red Tide??)

@ShadySands Happy Birthday my brother! We are older, grayer, and likely heavier than we were. But we carried the legacy in our time! More than that no one could ask!

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

I thought about putting this video in the Ukraine thread, but it's more about military hardware than the politics behind the war...

Or, just maybe, the western tech is not used as freely as the old soviet era. Highly subjective video in my opinion, but than again I don't follow the conflict that closely. What I did hear is that Kursk is the biggest graveyard of western weapons so far in the war, which would make sense as the Ukrainians were on the offensive there.

Usual rah rah stuff. YouTube isn't the place for analysis, either way.

Kursk is definitely the biggest graveyard for western weapons as Ukraine has mostly used their best units there and they're mostly armed with western weapons.

(The only weapon system that is 'dominating' in Ukraine are $1000 chinese drones. The vast majority of everything else on both sides has massively underperformed in both absolute terms and in terms of expectation. In terms of the video things like the Strid122 are dominating so much that Ukraine are down to 2 (two) operational vehicles... and barring a couple of artillery strikes they've all been got by those cheap drones)

I was laughing my ass off seeing all the news articles regarding China's 6th gen prototype flying, especially because not long before people were saying it was just a ground model that was for show. Either way it seems that the future may not be so bright for the production of the F-35 jet.

Algeria buying Su-57s, means we'll get a better look at it perhaps (and flaws will be waved away due to 'export model')

I mean in the India air show the su-57e was flying while the f-35 was sitting on the ground. I'll laugh my ass off if India ends up going with the rafale.

German now plans to build the largest armed forces in Europe by 2031. When was the last time that happened? 1933. Thanks Trumpf.

All through the late Cold War, (West) Germany had the largest armed forces in Europe.

As an American taxpayer I am happy to see Germany *finally* stepping up to its responsibilities and obligations and doing its fair share for NATO collective security, though I'll believe it only when I see it.

We sure want them to have the bigliest army when the AfD wins next election.

The situation isn't directly comparable. During the Cold War, the US and Germany had a powerful opponent in common. At present, that may no longer be the case. The change in interests can (and probably will) lead to a divergence of political motivations.

Yes, now they have a powerful opponent (in Europe) but we don't. So if anything, they should be spending more than us.
