The New Cinema and Movie Thread

After seeing some of RLM'd video on the film Moonfall, I felt a sudden urge to see it, because I'm in the mood for an utterly mindless, ridiculous, zero logic disaster movie that you can laugh at. Sadly, last I looked it was buy only still, not rent.

Wasn't there some Star Trek episode with a quote about the more complex the mind, the greater the need for simplicity of play? Judging from my entertainment desires as of late, I must have the most complex mind in the world then.  😛

TOS "Shore Leave".  Its a Kirk quote from near the end of the episode, IIRC.

Prince Valiant (1997) - based on the famous comic strip by Hal Foster, the movie (directed by Anthony "Waxworks" Hickox) is a bit of a mess. Scenes are linked by comic panels and narration and I have a feeling that wasn't intended - it makes it feel like a lot of the connective tissue of the film was cut or never shot.  Based on the credits, there are definitely scenes missing from the final film.

Plot follow Squire Valiant who is tasked by King Arthur to escort Princess Ilene to Wales while Arthur's knights go north to demand the return of Excalibur from the Scots not realizing it was Vikings (working with Morgan Le Fay) who took it and framed the Scots.  Valiant gets caught up in the larger story all while the better known knights are busy.

Famously the director was locked out of editing the film by the German producers (and according to actor Warwick Davis, perhaps with cause).  But its a fun enough low fantasy Arthurian run-around.  Ron Perlman, Davis, Joanna Lumley and Udo Kier are all kind of wasted (ie not given a lot to do given their talents) but welcome additions to any cast.  Katherine Heigl probably gets the best bits as plucky Princess Ilene while Stephen Moyer is appropriately square-jawed and heroic for the Valiant of the film.

(Sorry, can only find the German version of the trailer, which kind of makes sense given in the US the movie hasn't had a release since VHS and sunk at the theaters).

Space Truckers (1996)

Stuart Gordon directs the story of John Canyon (Dennis Hopper), independent space trucker - one of the last independent cargo haulers in the solar system.  Circumstances force him to take a 'no questions asked' haul to earth.  Along for the trip are Debi Mazar as Cindy whose mom is having an operation on Earth and will do anything to get back there and Stephen Dorff as Mike a young trucker who just got his license who forces his way onto John's job.

Gordon's Robot Jox famously got a threatening letter from the producers of Robocop over the name (it was originally titled RoboJox).  But really this film is more in tone with Robocop in its satire of politics and big business and the intersection of same with the average working joe (in this case, long haulers as opposed to Robocop's police officers).  Its a fun film considering some of the more lurid aspects of it that aren't dwelled on too heavily (particularly in the middle section).  Lots of people to spot in the movie; besides Hopper, Mazar and Dorff, you get Charles Dance, George Wendt, Vernon Wells, Shane Rimmer and in a small role, Barbara Crampton.

We rented/saw Moonfall.

We had a lot of fun snorting, catcalling, and poking fun at Moonfall.
The space scenes looked great on 4k/OLED. The actors tried their best. It didn't have cheesy otp Will Smith like lines (took itself a little too seriously in its own universe vs. say, ID4). There was mayhem, but yet not enough mayhem. There was no Apple computer, but there was plenty of looney stuff and "science".  M-O-O-N! That spells moon!

I would not recommend Moonfall, unless like us, you occasionally just like watching bad movies while kicking back on a warm Sunday evening.

Evil Dead 4: Dr. Strange gets the Necronomicon

I didn't want to go see this in the theater. I really wanted to see The Northman. But I decided that it wasn't really an appropriate family movie day on Mother's Day, so I settled for the latest Marvel offering. For the first 75%, it was a pretty typical MCU vehicle, but at the end it totally turned into a Sam Raimi movie. Spoilers:

Spoiler

-Bruce Cambell gets a nice cameo in his normal fashion.

-Scarlet Witch has some emotional moments that play off of Wandavision nicely.

-It goes full Evil Dead when Dr. Strange meets an evil version of himself with a 3rd eye and they fight with musical notes. Then he uses a book to reanimate another version of himself and have that corpse fight Scarlet Witch. I wouldn't have been surprised if the undead Dr. Strange said "Come get some". It was fantastic.  It ended extremely well.

Prisoners of the Ghostland. (2021)

It's a very strange film. The movie alternates between Japanese and English while being set in a post apocalyptic mashup of Samurai movies and Westerns with some horror elements. I would honestly struggle to label it with a genre beyond thriller if I had a gun to my head.

But I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's engaging and offers a lot if you enjoy surreal dreamscapes and hearing Nic Cage yelling "TESTACUHLLLLL" was just ****ing hilarious. I would recommend it to anyone who digs surreal stuff or is just looking for something bat**** crazy to check out.

I still haven't seen the first. I'm sure I'll get around to it soon.

Quote

How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart.

In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

I guess Avatar really went off the rails after Legend of Korra. What kind of bending turned everyone into blue cgi people?

By the way @KP wants Blue Velvet have you ever watched Six-String Samurai? It's set in a post-apocalyptic alternate reality where a nuclear attack by the Soviet Union made most of the planet uninhabitable. Only Lost Vegas (formerly Las Vegas) remains, being under siege for decades by the Red Army. Having run out of ammo and resources, the siege is going nowhere. After the death of Elvis, Lost Vegas' king, a guitar battle for the throne of Lost Vegas is called.

The film follows Buddy (guy looking a whole lot like Buddy Holly) and his trusty sidekick, on their way to Lost Vegas to claim the throne. On the way they run into strange zombies, cannibals, the Russians and even Death himself, who, armed with a Stratocaster, tries to vanquish rock and claim the throne of Lost Vegas in the name of heavy metal.

That movie is very hard to find.

Looks to be the whole thing, avaliable in the US (and I assume with VPN in case it's region restricted).
