I finally got around to watching the remake of Total Recall. The plot was nonsensical. It had none of the kitsch of the Arnold Schwarzenegger version. And it also bore little resemblance to the PKD short story. Although that’s probably for the best. But it wasn’t a terrible thing to watch. Plus it had Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel in it. And they actually had a fight scene together. That was worth the time spent by itself LOL.

but I did spot two call backs to the original movie and got a chuckle out of each.

Loving Vincent

Probably the most artsy movie I have ever seen. Quite good.

I wish Hollywood wouldn't remake Paul Verhoeven's classics. What are the odds the new director's vision and execution will be better than Verhoeven's? Practically nil. Remake movies that had a good premise but came up short on implementation, not movies that are already amazing and still absolutely hold up.

I can only come up with one remake off the top of my head that was not a complete disappointment. The Cohen Brothers remake of True Grit.

The Man Who Knew Too Much?

House of Wax?

Ben-Hur?

The Hammer remakes of the Universal horror films?

Casino Royale?

That said, I'm surprised they remade Total Recall rather than take the basic idea (someone goes to Rekall, gets a vacation, are things real or not after that?) and build a new movie out of it.  Seems like the perfect set-up for a series of loosely related films, and my understanding of the 2012 film is that its different enough plotwise that they could have probably done it had they not chose to use the names from the original film and a few other story elements.

If we go back a ways the John Carpenter's The Thing was a great remake.

Ah yes, The Thing remake is good.  I knew there were more, but nothing was coming to me.

we could name a few more but ben-hur is the one which always leaps to mind when this issue is raised and you had that covered. weren't gonna quibble once the point were made. in gd's defense, am suspecting many folks aren't gonna realize a few remakes is remakes. stuff like little shop of horrors and insomnia? horror films get overlooked, so the thing and the fly is possible ignored. also, am knowing there is fans o' internal affairs, but the departed were superior in every way, but again, am suspecting at least a few folks don't know or forget the scorsese film is a remake.

regardless, ben hur were actual more than enough for us.

HA! Good Fun!

Casino Royale yes. Although the remake was a different kind of movie. Ben Hur? No way! That’s poopy talk!

Edit Yes , the Departed is another good one. Although like Gromnir said I didn’t even know it WAS a remake until some time after seeing it.

With his usual mix of candor and comedy, Steve covered the highs and lows of his award-winning career, including his nightmare stint as Boss Films' Creature FX supervisor on the first ill-fated Predator suit, worn by Belgian martial artist and aspiring action star, Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Wow I did not know the 1959 Charlton Heston version was a remake! I stand corrected. Sorry Amentep I thought you were talking about the 2016 one.

I have no issue with someone doing another take on We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, the mistake was also calling it Total Recall. I get why they did ($$) but that immediately invites comparison with Verhoeven's masterpiece.

See if this rings a bell for anyone. I remember another version of that story except the memory place not only sold memories they bought them too. If you sold the memory of an event it was gone from your head. A guy in money trouble sold a bunch of his favorite memories and then couldn’t get them back. I don’t remember if that was a story or a TV episode. It might’ve been a twilight zone episode but I’m just not sure.

Summer of Soul (2021). The official snippet: "During the same summer as Woodstock, over 300,000 people attended the Harlem Cultural Festival, celebrating African American music and culture, and promoting Black pride and unity. The footage from the festival sat in a basement, unseen for over 50 years, keeping this incredible event in America’s history lost—until now."

A little bit of a frustrating...documentary? I thought it was going to be only or at least mostly music, but instead the music is constantly interrupted and talked over with contemporary commentary both from still living performers who were originally there, attendees who felt it was the world to them and how great it is that everyone else can finally know that it actually happened (optimistic take, folks!), and just...I guess modern celebrities who know about it. I get that it was an important moment and so it's helpful to provide context, but I wasn't really in the mood to watch something like The Sixties - it billed itself on more just being the lost footage of an incredible event, and so I more just wanted to watch the performance itself, :shrugz:. What I saw and heard of the performers and the crazy crowd themselves were fun and neat, though - hope they archive all of that footage and someday present a more...concert film-like presentation of it without all the fluff.

In a dramatic turn with implications for major Hollywood studios, Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against the Walt Disney Co. on Thursday alleging that her contract was breached when Black Widow was released on Disney+.
Indeed, the lawsuit comes on the eve of the release of fellow Disney event pic Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, and on Premier Access.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, states that Black Widow had been guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release when Johansson signed her deal with Marvel.
According to the complaint, Disney tortiously interfered with that deal for its own advantage.

I have to say it was only a matter of time.  There are so many metric bonuses that get kibboshed in day and date releases, it just was inevitable.

I thought that was fairly confirmed with Widow's death and the fact that the Black Widow film was more about introducing her replacement than about her character? ;)

Sure, it was probable but I'd say now it's near definite.  I won't rule anything out because money but being dead in the MCU doesn't mean the character won't show up elsewhere. I guess they can use old footage or CGI if they need the character for flashbacks

And what appears to be cowboy/heeled boots.
They don't look like tight jeans at least. Needed a belt to keep them up, even.  :shifty:
