Baldur's Gate 3 - the 2nd thread

I personally don't like rolls in video games because there usually is no scenario for unsuccessful roll or scenario is unplayable. Like in some games failing to pickpocket makes everyone in town hostile. What should a player do? Load a save game, that's what.

Second, if there is always a slight chance of success there is an opportunity for min maxing where you don't put point's in those abilities, because if you need to roll them you can save/load your way to success.

Far better mechanic for video game is 0/1 approach. Either you have the skill (or appropriate level of it) or you don't. So if you want to open every chest then you need to hone your skill, if you want charm your way out then you have to develop your persuasion etc.

Sure, if it's a binary choice between either design, I'll go for the skill threshold too.

But I'd instead prefer a system that lets the player deal with the consequences of actions that carry a degree of uncertainty. So instead of psychically turning the entire village permanently hostile ‑locking you out of content‑ on a failed pickpocket roll, a system that expands on the way DOS2 does it where the guards are called and then they try to arrest you, would be preferable. A failed pickpocket roll becomes content rather than a not-so-subtle encouragement to quick load.

At the end of the day it's a question of resources, and personally I'd much rather have said resources allocated to developing interesting systems and mechanics than all the bells and whistles that are more easily marketable but don't add much play to a game.

So, in the comment section of the Josh' talk about Reputation Systems in western RPGs one can find comments by Marat Sar - dev of half-amazing Disco Elysium. He drop this interesting tidbit about BG3 when discussing games which might be taking inspiration from their work:
9cGd08O.jpg

It would explain the weird past tense being used for the PCs conversation choices (which I still don't like, if it continues through the game and isn't just a brief flashback or something) but could also hint at some interesting character defining in BG3.

But is this meaningful consequence? What exactly happens when the guards come and try to arrest you? Either they let you go or you kill them with no further repercussions. I don't see any meaningful consequences there at all. If you get hauled away to a prison cell in which you languish for a long time and you gain a widespread reputation as an untrustworthy crook, that would be consequence. But of course players would reject that as too extreme, even those who keep saying they want consequences in their RPGs. I think self-described RPG fans love to talk a good talk about wanting meaningful consequences in their games, but in reality don't (though I want to be clear I'm not saying this is the case with you).

Honestly I don't remember too well what happened if you let guards arrest you. IIRC your loot was confiscated and you got put in a cell, but I'm not sure what further repercussions could it have, if any.

Of course, if being a known thief or murderer of guards has no ramifications whatsoever then yes, that's a pretty shallow excuse for "consequences". Ideally, your reputation being tarnished thus would close certain doors while opening others. Much as you'd expect in a P&P session. I don't think DOS2 went that far though.

If the next update is about romance, does this mean Baldur's Gate 3 will finally implement multiplayer romances? If so, it will either be the funniest **** ever or absolutely terrifying, possibly both.

I am not sure how practical MP Romance is, I am not a fan. But here is a updated link around the Romance options in BG3, its still not clear to me the Romance implementation ....its still nebulous with the current information

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

I vividly remember playing the mess that was Thief reboot - precisely the disappointing dead space that was the brothel level and watching through a peephole two NPC awkwardly humping. I had a realization that some poor slobs had to make it happen.

Overall the update looks solid - lots of promising promises. But looking at those spreadsheet of how different PCs can boink and remembering that it's someones job to do that, and figuring out on how all races can boink each other... I don't want that job. It's not customer service bad, but it's bad.

The most interesting thing about that is confirmation that surface interactions will play less of a role so I guess no more necrofire spam. So "meh" pretty much sums up my reaction to that.

I wonder if you'll still be able to build nukes by putting a barrel inside a barrel inside a barrel...

It's probably unpleasant and I feel for those folks. I knew a guy who had a job editing porn and he.... didn't enjoy it.

But you can now multiplayer romance, which is like reading Sutter Cane.
