ShadySands Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 The last two I played were Grey Goo and Dawn of War 3 and they both had my single most hated, I guess I'll call it a feature, of having a shared singular campaign that has you bouncing between factions. DoW3 really disappointed me across the board though. Free games updated 3/4/21
melkathi Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 (edited) I'll stipulate that Dark Colony, while not great gameplay wise, tried to do good things in the genre. The Warlords Battlecry series had the most evolved main characters. Battle Realms had the most involved systems. Spellforce the most hybridization with RPGs. (and Spellforce 1 the most ambitious story (though too complicated for PC Gamer UK to understand) Dune 2 not only pretty much birthed the genre, but also started it off the bat with unique faction units (the Harkonnen missile launch being very different to Atreidis Fremen units), and with spice booms moving the battle unpredictably across the map. Dawn of War 1 had very fast gameplay - a rusher's dream. edit: and Earth 2160 had the most city builder base building Edited June 6, 2020 by melkathi Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise).
213374U Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 Spellforce 3 was a fantastic RPG-RTS hybrid with a nice character-driven plot. And somewhat of a rarity for the genre, it's fully playable in co-op. Speaking of which, they just announced a new standalone expansion. - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.
Skazz Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 Metal Fatigue. I loved that RTS - the ability to endlessly customize gundams combots and then see them duke it out was a dream come true to my kid self.

I would have enjoyed the story, but unlike the previous entries in the series, the German Language version was terrible. And that was very disappointing seeing how they are a German developer. Also, I had just gotten used to the SF3 controls and they went and changed everything SF3 I enjoyed very much how it tied in with the original game. But the new scheme handled arranging and using a larger number of items and abilities better so eventually it grew on me. I was looking forward to replaying the original campaign in the upgraded SH engine as per their roadmap, but at this point I don't think it'll happen. 1 hour ago, Malcador said: The real question for me is, does it still have the hot chick on the cover. That's a shame. The original and both stand-alone expansions were great. 2 was a bit strange. Never finished it. At the time I didn't game much. What they did in 1 (I think second expansion) with the co-op, was hide the main NPC for 2 in it. If you played co-op and skirmish and leveled your character up way up, you got to do a quest to tie in with 2. At least from what I understand. Never got high enough level. Apparently sharing your gaming stats is intrusion of privacy, but I think GOG users wants to hide their pirate side. Wow, my brain hurts from reading that thread on the GOG forums. Seems like there are two issues: First that this is a giveaway where Linux users miss out on wallpaper artwork (!) due to not having the Galaxy client even as an option. I'm sure Keyrock and the other guy on the planet who is exclusively playing on Linux will be fine with that. And if not, they can voice their protest by not buying from GOG. I'm suspecting building and maintaining a Linux version of Galaxy might cost more than the expected increase in sales or usage will rake in. The other one is sharing your stats on social media. Which I get, and is the reason why I am not participating. If nobody participates then promotions like those will go away on their own. I'm sure a hell not sharing my GOG stats with the world, then everyone would see the thousands of hours I've put into Master of Orion 3. Talk about embarrassing. There's a third ridiculous complaint that I see all the time when it comes to development. People who say that they should not spend their time making silly promotions but rather finish Cyberpunk. Yeah, sure. Because CDPR's game developers double as marketing team, right? Sigh. edit: And before someone from PETL (People for the Ethical Treatment of Linux :p) comes around and berate me for passive-agressive penguin hate - I've been an avid Linux user for longer than most. It's kind of a requirement in my line of work, although it's been a while now, I just never bothered playing games on it. Except Tux Racer. Edited August 9, 2020 by majestic 3 No mind to think.
