IMO the only appropriate response to heavy handed government is defiance.

Agreed, the only consideration is it depends which country you are living in when you mount the defiance. In countries like China, Egypt and Russia defiance can cost you your life and even if the protest is peaceful you can still get arrested and incarcerated indefinitely with no access to a free and fair legal system

Only 700 of an estimated 1.5M have been turned in.

The hand in process hasn't formally started yet- and there won't be 1.5M eligible guns anyway, there will be a lot less than that. But, those quibbles aren't that significant, practically it will be a disaster as there are mutually contradictory aims and a bunch of ideological hand waving/ wringing. Having rushed the legislation through parliament without thinking it through they now have to actually implement it and they plain cannot do it the way they've promised. Everyone knows it will cost a billion dollars- minimum- to do properly, but they cannot justify that when teachers and nurses etc want pay rises so instead they've budgeted $200 million- and topped it up, ludicrously, from the state 'insurance' fund (ACC) as there will be less accidents to pay out (there are very few firearm related accidents in NZ anyway). As such they either expect max 20% of the weapons to be handed in, are going to offer 20% of the value or are lying about the expected cost. Probably a bit of all three. Plus they decided to change the definitions again just before passing the legislation with no notification, which did not fill anyone effected with confidence. So they've lost a significant number of people who they want handing in guns already as they know they're being outright lied to.

I have to admit I've found the reaction to the backlash kind of hilarious though. I'm not directly effected since I don't own a semi auto but I have had a lot of fun needling anti gun zealots with the unworkability of it and their own logical contradictions- laughably, illegally owned firearms are excluded from the amnesty for example, so literal criminals have no incentive to hand their weapons in. Amazingly, none of the people who thought buying a gun back for 70% of its value was a great offer would accept my equally great offer to buy their cars for 70% of their value, though to be fair most also accepted that the offer only sounded good if you didn't think about it for more than 5 seconds.

A brilliant take on Brexit. Personally, I liked the chapter on Bigfoot Erotica better than Theresa May's Chapter 12

Are you talking about the totality of history? Because monarchaic regiemes were the norm through most of history. So, China lasting as long as they have by not being "democratic" Isn't saying much. You might as well apply that to the European nations who were mostly monarchaic for many centuries.

STEVE BANNON - i.e., that Steve Bannon - and Guo Wengui are behind the Hong Kong protest/riot. Below are video evidences, hit cc for translation:

Personally, I think China should have grabbed him while he was in Hong Kong and charged him as a foreign intelligence agent,  and used him to exchange for Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou.

Do you guys know what kind of system Honk Kong have before 1997?  Hong Kong was a COLONY.  Hong Kong was a colony without democracy or voting rights before the British handed over Hong Kong to China.  British ruled Hong Kong for 156 years, yet never once did British gave the locals democracy or the right to vote during all those years.  Only JUST BEFORE British handed Hong Kong back to China, did British tried to impose "democracy" and "freedom" on Hong Kong - just as the West imposed democracy and freedom on Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and so many other places.

In the 1967, Hong Kong people staged a protest against British rule.  Do you guys know what the British did?  British went all out.  51 people were killed, of whom 15 died in bomb attacks, with 832 people sustaining injuries, while 4979 people were arrested and 1936 convicted.   Now compared how British responded to the 1967 protest to how China has (not) responded to the current situation.   Which is why I find it an upmost hypocrisy for the West - ESPECIALLY BRITISH - to criticize China over the current protest in Hong Kong.

Frankly, China should immediately shut down Hong Kong universities and other universities in Hong Kong, as America and the West are using universities as the platforms to undermine China in Hong Kong.  That was what the British did immediately after 1967, shut down the schools and then never reopened some of them; and that was what Lee Kuan Yew - the legendary founding father of Singapore - did,  shut down universities in the 1970s (some of them permanently) to root out foreign interference.   The fact was Lee Kuan Yew built Singapore with an iron fist, not democracy or freedom.

I know I swore I'd never vote for any Democrat but if she somehow gets nominated I would make an exception.  But she won't. The nomination process is designed to offer up the biggest turd, not the best candidate.

The Chinese have never been a Democracy and the since the Cold War they have convinced themselves that the idea and concept of a Democracy is something that would be ultimately destructive to there true survival and sustainability and also not in the best interests of most of there citizens

What do I think? I have mixed views but from a practical perspective  I dont care anymore because the Chinese have an important role in supporting the free market and as long as there internal problems dont impact  "Western "  countries from global trade and ensuring a better world they  should be left alone

From a humanitarian perspective its not my business or in my interests  to judge  the Chinese around  how they run there country, if they dont care about realistic and sustainable social justice thats there choice. o:)

Well let me start off by saying what I like about the video, she is hot and cute when she bumbles through her interpretation of " this clear information around why certain countries have been toppled by the USA "

What I dont like includes the fact she doesnt understand how global commodities are sold or who produces them, she doesn't understand the concept of why we have a global currency like the dollar as the worlds reserve currency , she doesnt understand the historical reasons why countries like Venezuala, Libya and Iran are facing the problems they facing and also she keeps referring to things as "  absolutely obvious "  when they are not because her analysis is flawed and spurious

KP countries like the USA do care about humanitarian issues but you need to also balance that objective with normal global  self interest and realistic outcomes when it comes to interfering in other countries internal policies. You dont want to impact things like  the global economy because of poor human rights in another country unless its supported by the UN security council so everyone takes there share of responsibility

You cant expect the USA to fix the whole worlds problems ?

So.... which Presidential candidate is going to fix this? https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-budget-gap-widened-23-in-first-nine-months-of-fiscal-year-11562868054

That would be none of them. I'll ask a simpler question... which candidate promises not t make this worse? That would also be none.

Time to stockpile more canned food, fuel, and ammunition. Tick tock tick tock...

Funny that he tried to pick a fight with a Playboy journalist rather than the regular networks.

The fact that Playboy even has a WH correspondent is new to me since one doesn't normally associate them with politics. Gotta keep up on the juicy gossip I guess.
