Takkik Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 The issue with BG progression, was that yes it worked, but only for BG2. BG1 and especially Throne of Bhaal suffered because of it. I do find it silly, however, whenever devs kills the PC and reset his levels. My prefered solution would be to not forcefully continue protagonist (something which IMO would solve at least some of Deadfire’s narrative problems) but I know there are quite a few fans of continuity. They could have really killed the PC and put po2 xx years later where you play a new guy that discover he's the watcher reincarnation and get his memory back. Something like the ultima series, you play same guy over centuries during multiples games. There's no guarantee that there'll be a third game, just like there was no guarantee there would be a second. Why do you want to hold off on the cool stuff until a theoretical future game that, if it even happens, won't happen for years? Well, i like continuity, and true, long sagas. I doubt Bioware and Interplay were already sure there would be a BG2 when they were developping BG1. I find leveling is too fast in Pillars. It should take way more time to get better at anything. Budgets etc have changed since old days, harder to create a trilogy now. Specialy when you use kickstarter. A game inspired by baldur's gate wasn't sure to succeed. And we never got baldur's gate 3. Always though throne of baal should have been BG3 (not sure what was intended), it feel so rushed with only combat horribly balanced and not much text/choices like in BG2 (still, I liked the story). People and times changes. Myself I'm not the same gamer I was before. Game dev have changed with bigger budgets and more risks. But one day... everything is possible today. Still waiting for a true successor to Neverwinter Nights. Just one of best tool set for creating adventures & dm. I don't know how dos2 toolset stand, but NWN 1 was good memories (even is the base game campaign was bad). 1

But at the same time, AAA games nowadays are designed since the start in order to be the less risky possible. To cater to everyone, including those who don't like reading, like to faceroll everything, consider choices as a bother, games longer than 10 hours a borefest, and having to think about what to do, an hindrance. That's why everything is dumbed down. Big budgets are actually the harm of games AND cinema in the US. The problem is this ultra liberalism where money governs creativity. And no, i'm not a socialist. And yes, because you're used to things how they are now does not mean they are good, rightful, or normal. Like i said in my previous post. And then, you have the whole DLCs swindles. I tend to check the financial reports of big publishers like EA from time to time (or whatever i can find about it). I can tell you that if several developers' studios closed because of them, they, themselves are still pretty well off... Throne of Bhaal is not really worth it. I'm not sure why Black Hound was cancelled (console market in sight?), but it feels to me like a last ditch effort, the way Van Buren or Torn were. Interplay was already financially sick. The context of the development of these 3 games was completely different from those of Fallout 1, 2, and BG 1, 2. As a side note, for some reason, Brian Fargo deposited some time ago ownership for trademark ''Van Buren''. Not sure what he intends to do, though. Edited June 18, 2018 by Abel

KDubya Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 If they wanted to do this they should have had DeadFire max out at like level 12 or so. First DLC take it to level 16 and second takes it to 20. There is no way to go higher than 20 now with DLC as you are demigods at level 20. They should have had you be a reincarnated Watcher set some time in the future from PoE, or maybe had you be Thaos who comes back to either finish the job or set things right.

The fact that I'm close to the level cap this early makes it rather less exciting for me to progress, tbh. Not to mention, I'm playing single-class Cipher, and there are a total of SIX spells for both level 8 and level 9. And the level 8 spells sound so underwhelming I decided to take other spells from previous levels instead. That leaves me with three spells in level 9, and that's about it. I don't know about other classes, but as of right now, I have to say that the game gets a lot less exciting for me as far as character progression is concerned. So yeah, I sure hope something will be done about the whole level progression and level cap issue.

But There is lot of way to progress outside of leveling in a RPG : items, perks/feats (if the dev want they can make some abilities/passives as quest reward), you could get title, land etc... like becoming governor of an island, or be the commander of a fort. Progressing in a faction and unlocking gear & abilities specific to this faction. Same way they could introduce 'prestige classes'. Quest to become the apprentice of an animancer, be a pirate etc... A designer/GM have lot of way to reward a player even at max level. Getting to level 20 isn't the end of the world. 1

Abel Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Looks like the game would need some hexa edit like the first one, in order to increase significantly the experience needed to lvl up from beginning to end game. 35% / 40% was the way to go for completionists in Pillars 1. Don't remember where the thread about how to edit this in first game is anymore. Should not be very different in Pillars 2?

You could only get to lvl 8 with BG1. Bioware never needed to find some crappy reason for you to be lvl 1 in BG2. I'm afraid they will do the same if there is a Pillars 3. Increasing lvl cap in the 3 expansions is pretty much guaranting they'll do it. Don't want it. However Bioware DID reset you to level on after your "death" in ME2 which is pretty much the same thing here. 1

Or are you saying "there was no ruleset" because it wasn't based on an already existing system?

And ME3 DID offer continuous progression from ME2. I know people like to stomp on EA (which I find hilarious because I remember them for the creation of some of the greatest CRPGs of the '80s in the Bard's Tale series), but in this case it really does look like a story decision which makes sense. Even Agents of Shield makes a reference to something similar with Coulson in season 1.
