Random loot generation
gkathellar replied to dukefx's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Oh yeah, it's absolutely great how it encourages soft resetting and rest spamming, and increases the frustration curve of replaying the game. I don't get how that is so bad? You're not supposed to go hunting for named items, you're not even supposed to know they even exist, right? Only reason you know is not in the game, it's because you're replaying or you looked it up somewhere. If this were even close to true, then (a) all item locations would be randomized, and (b) there still wouldn't be a reason to have certain items exist in one playthrough and be totally absent in another. PoE could easily use a sorting algorithm to ensure that all items showed up one of several logical locations - including as items that opponents use. -
POE story inspiration (spoilers)

Now I'm imagining Rymrgand misinterpreting Buddhist doctrine and babbling for hours on end about music. And I have you to thank for that. -
POE story inspiration (spoilers)
gkathellar replied to Space's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Yes, but the actual things they are saying have almost nothing in common. Also, Iovara is not the main character. -
they went quite a distance trying to add different whistles and bells to each weapon type to differentiate each other .. Battle axes as original designed (with hit resolution as multiplier) had their niche as "the crit" weapons .. Right now they (BAs) are virtually the same as sabres in every way only, they do less damage .. That goes against the perceived design goal of making each weapon group "unique/different" gameplay/mechanics wise (I'm not talking animations/color/sparkly effects) .. Honestly, given the way crits work, they should probably have their stats switched, so that battle axes perform better with large shields, and sabers perform better with 1h fighting.

Feature request - ring of testing
gkathellar replied to peddroelm's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Why is this in the tech support forum? -
I've seen mentions of retaliation monks who use their fists here and there, but not much the particulars of how people have actually built them. I'm curious, and thinking of starting one up, and while a few things occur to me, I'm not quite sure how to approach building the character. How would you/do you/have you made an unarmed monk focused around retaliation?

They're supposed to be? Really? Where does it say that? What source material are you drawing on? In any case, Pallegina strongly approves of the Watcher if they're Diplomatic, but is personally hard-handed, hard-headed, and is honestly pretty violent. She's the essence of "walk softly, and carry a big stick." That's Diplomatic/Aggressive to a tee. I guess you could go Diplomatic/Passionate, since Passionate choices largely work out to "judgmental ass" in practice, but that seems kinda meta.

POE story inspiration (spoilers)

I'm going to have to dispute that. Atheism is not some wacky novelty that Nietzsche invented. There have been plenty of atheist philosophers who come closer to what Iovara is saying than Nietzsche does - and plenty who are farther from it. Insofar as there's any philosophical grounding to PoE, it's, "man created god in his own image," taken to the farthest extreme. I'll give you the extremely oversimplified version of Nietzsche here, for reference: "God is dead," refers primarily to the belief in God and to God as a source of values. Nietzsche asserts throughout his body of work that religion, and Christianity in particular, no longer functions as a source of social values (due in part to the realization of scientific truth, and due in part to what he views as Christianity's own death-worshipping nature). The more we know about the universe, in Nietzsche's mind, the more clearly we can see that we are specks of dust in an uncaring, unthinking universe. The quest for capital-T Truth doesn't end with God, Nietzsche says, but with death. The reason Zarathustra is happy (sort of) about all of this is that it represents a golden opportunity for humanity to live up to the immensity of the murder of God that it has committed, become divine, and recreate itself (morally) in its own image ... or something. Unfortunately, Nietzsche died before he had a chance to complete a more thorough treatise on the subject, A Reevaluation of Values, and his notes were used by his much-despised, anti-Semite of a sister to create the bastardized proto-Nazi handbook known as The Will to Power. That said, we have The Gay Science, which is fantastic reading and is probably essential to even begin to follow Zarathustra. Yeah, pretty much. It's nice how Woedica keeps promising justice, but she and her servants have caused untold quantities of suffering, and they intend to do it over and over again. Stopping them was kinda the only remotely good thing that could be done. -
Frankly, the character you're describing here isn't a joiner, or sure doesn't seem like one. There's a difference between your fully evil psychopath and just being plain ol' greedy, for example. The kind of character you're describing is probably someone even a lot of "evil" PC's wouldn't want around. He sounds like a perpetual loose cannon or a rabid dog that needs to be put down, rather than anyone you'd actually be willing to risk letting into your party. I think that it's entirely possible to create an "evil" NPC that's nowhere near that extreme and still be what most people would see as evil. But you see, we already have that kind of character. We have Durance. He is a completely reprehensible human being. Aloth himself can come across as something less than a shining example of humanity (elfanity, whatever). All your companions have more then the usual level of blood thirstiness (except Eder, and he is just adorable) , so I am not sure what people want in terms of their "evil" companion. Durance is an Ignis. What some people (like me) want want are Edwin/Korgan/Viconia/Vhailor types. This has been expressed repeatedly.

Well, to be fair, there are guaranteed items that boost the other skills, so if you really need extra Survival for a conversation/scripted event, you can figure out where to get it and go from there. Mechanics seems to be the only one without a guaranteed item boost. This. Items that boost the other skills are practically growing on trees.

I wouldn't say Paladins are better tanks, keep in mind that Fighters can use Vigorous Defense (turning their defenses to +35/+30/+30/+30 for 15 sec) once per encounter, but more importantly is that Fighters have Critical Defense (turning 20% of incoming crits into hits and 10% of hits into grazes) which is a ridiculously powerful talent. Anyway, I'm willing to concede the point only for the fact that some of the most staunch defenders of the Paladins class, calling the Paladin "A great class that simply plays different from other classes and that people are playing them wrong", have brought up your exact quote about Paladin tanks as "proof" to back their claims. That you're disagreeing with them yourself is simply amusing to see. I don't think Critical Defense is that good myself. My fighters are already stacking defense, so critical hits are either unlikely or impossible. It also means the hits-to-grazes effect is less useful. If I'm hit on a roll of 50 or higher, Critical Defense effectively transforms that into a roll of 55 or higher. But if I'm only hit on a roll of 70 or higher, Critical Defense effectively transforms it to 73 or higher. It's a talent that gets less useful the better my fighter is at his primary role. If your fighter is a sword and shield, high per/res deflection tank, I agree that the Critical Defense ability would not see much use as you are not getting hit in the first place. This is tanking forever. If you go for a damage spec'd tank with two handers or dual wield, with deflection in the 70-105 range, then the ability comes into its own. At that deflection range you will get hit and the ability will block the worst of them. This is tanking "good enough for long enough" Right, and this is actually what most of a fighter's tanking abilities are geared around. Recovering Endurance and shaking things off is of limited utility to a pure tank. An off-tank, though, gets way more mileage out of it.
