USA Mid-Term Election Results
Oh that's ok. We beat the mid-term election thing to death. This is a more interesting topic anyway. I agree with you (and so do the founding fathers BTW). If our basic rights, to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, are granted to us by a cabal of humans they can be taken from us by a cabal of humans. I believe they are granted by God and are inherent to EVERYONE. The laws are the things we agree on they serve to put a check on the passions of humans but are also used as a check the authority of government. Barack Obama has criticized the Bill of Rights as a bill of negative rights. It limits what the government can do to you. He'd prefer one that mandates what the government will do FOR you. You have the right to a home, a right to a job. Sounds great right? It's not. If the government has the responsibility to provide you a home and a job then the government will decide where that home will be and what that job will be. Self determination is removed from the equation. Pride of ownership is removed from the equation. You guys ever see HUD housing here in the US? It's a slum. The people how live there care nothing for it because they don't own it and are in no way responsible for it. Even if you do not accept the governments hand out you are still impacted by it. The government does not earn money. It takes is. Every dollar someone receives without working for, someone else worked for without receiving it. Every acre of land the government builds something on it took from whoever owned it. Our founders figured the most important rights, the three I listed above are granted by God. That is a profound wisdom that I certainly agree with. I'd sum it up as the right to be left alone. Everything that cabal of humans, the government, does limits that to one extent or another. You may or may not know this, but when they refer to "God"; they are referring to Deism's version of God that is really more of a force of nature than a being. Just saying...

A taser would have been overkill too... And yes, in general the police are here to oppress and steal... errrr raise revenue. The best part about how they "raise revenue" is that they spend our money in order to do so. Hundreds of millions of dollars worth of property has been stolen thanks to the drug war, and about a trillion dollars has been spent in order to steal it.

Multi-classing! Give us multi-classing! If not now; then add it as a feature for the expansion.

Hyper-Real Robots
My thinking that if there ever were a real possibility of cyborg bodies like that, and given the costs of such a technology, it would inevitably lead to a practically immortal elite upper class of people with no regard for real human life. The world would be their perverse playground to live out their twisted fantasies born out of a lifetime of otherwise perpetual boredom. But then again, that's just my theory. There's actually a science fiction story, I can't remember who the author is right now at the moment, about a world where something akin happened. Basically a population of people is raised on a far away planet, groomed to perform on special days, when bored bureaucrats from other world link up with robots present on that planet to live out their vilest fantasies on the poor inhabitants. Hmm, does that ring a bell with anyone? That doesn't make much sense to me. They have sex dolls that aren't crappy so now they're sadistic monsters with complete control over a planet's population. What else makes them sadistic monsters? State of the art toasters?

Playing DA:I Cleared My Doubts About Engagement Mechanics In PoE
That could be addressed via AI (outside of the mechanic) The irony... THE IRONY!!! Also, no; that wouldn't work. some modest changes to the mrchanic. I guess it depends on what you mean by modest. Maybe. It all depends on what you think it adds to the game vs what it takes away. I realize that it can be fixed so that it isn't game breaking (it likely will be fixed if the mechanic is kept), but it would be easier AND in my opinion better if it was just cut.

Playing DA:I Cleared My Doubts About Engagement Mechanics In PoE
On what facts do you base this assertion? I do not see how this is the case. The more variables and mechanics you have; the harder balance is to achieve. The term overhaul suggests massive systems changes. I do not think that is necessary. I am talking about a few numbers changes mainly. I have not seen anything that suggests such changes would not have a meaningful impact. How would moving some numbers around prevent someone from being kited via engagement? Did you see the video where Sensuki landed a bunch of disengagement attacks over and over? The way engagement is handled needs to change, or else we can just do it over and over and over and over without penalty. I will grant you that but he himself stated that he doesnt think casuals will have an issue if they start from level 1. He's wrong. They will. They'll get hit, want to retreat, get pwned by disengagement; then get pissed. Many will be like, "WTF!? I'm not allowed to move in combat!? This is dumb!"

Saving the Wizard Class
In BG1 a mage can use slings, throwing daggers and Darts. Note: Darts can actually be pretty darn powerful for a mage, since the game gives you darts of wounding and darts of stunning. Stunning darts are particularly powerful because they're the only weapon in the game that can stun an opponent. And with darts a mage can have 2 attacks per round. The downside to darts, though, is that they lack the range of slings, so a mage who uses them has to put himself in danger to do so. Oh yeah. Still; he needs to have darts/bullets. That means using your proficiency points on those (as opposed to quarterstaff or dagger), and a bit of GP I suppose.

Playing DA:I Cleared My Doubts About Engagement Mechanics In PoE
Many talents are traps that have nothing to do with engagement. Talent balancing is a separate issue. No it isn't. Balancing talents will be much harder with engagement working as it currently does. Just because it has been abused easily does mot mean it cant be fixed easily. Fixing it would require an overhaul. That thing you said it doesn't need. The fact it can be abused isn't a glitch; it's the result of the way the mechanic functions. Engagement would need to be altered at a fundamental level in order to be fixed. Whether or not that overhaul will be easy is unknown to me, but it would be an overhaul none the less. Newbs like Waffle have stated they are comfortable with the system and it will be easier for them to get when they start at level 1. Waffle was informed as to how it works. Just wait for the newb who tries to run away while engaged and gets wrecked for seemingly no reason. How about you stop posting, and thus advocating the watering down of the game. I strongly disagree with his position on engagement, but he's entitled to his opinion.

Playing DA:I Cleared My Doubts About Engagement Mechanics In PoE
No it isn't. Heck I'll go further and prove it: A) The mechanic is easily abused see the video where Sensuki uses the mechanic to kite more effectively than was ever possible in the IE games. B) It's not even close to achieving one of it's primary purposes. That purpose being to prevent kiting. As noted earlier, it was meant to combat kiting; not make kiting easier. C) It's presented very poorly. No animations; just invisible damage. D) It limits movement to an extreme degree. This makes combat much, much less tactical. E) It allows for trap talents and abilities. F) It makes the game much harder to understand for newbies. EDIT: I could go on, but I think that's enough.

My Perspective on Pillars of Eternity
I agree. Not allowing multi-classing (at least for a number of class combos), seems to be a great opportunity lost. It would make for so many cool builds and strengthen the replayability of the game in a manifold of ways. I'd love to open up that aspect of character building. If not now; then the expansion should have it at least.

Playing DA:I Cleared My Doubts About Engagement Mechanics In PoE
i see, thanks, Sensuki. What would you say if before damage of AoOs is applied there would be a separate calculation to determine if and how succesfull the AoO is where ‚graceful retreat‘ would work in your favour? E.g. i disengage, enemy rolls with 10sided dice, then i roll with a 10sided dice and then a value from ‘graceful retreat’ is added to my score (e.g. on lvl 1 you get 1 from ‘graceful retreat’). If the result is < or equal 0 the AoO is not successful. 1-4 would be treated as a graze, 5-8 as a hit and applied in the standard attack resolution calculation. Do you think that would work or would it even make things worse? If disengagement attacks had a decent chance of failing then they wouldn't be so broken. It should be a 1D10; if the attacker rolls a 1: It auto-fails. If they roll a 10: It auto-succeeds. Otherwise it would be based on some kind of stat resolution. Each class should have a retreat and engagement stat that goes up every few levels. Fighters are good at landing disengagement attacks, but bad at retreating. Rouges are good at retreating, but bad at landing disengagement attacks. That could make it a bit more interesting... Another interesting idea is if it was just based on dexterity. The DEX of the one trying to retreat vs the DEX of the one trying to punish retreating.

Then the mechanic needs a serious overhaul, as it's never tactically wise to disengage.

My Perspective on Pillars of Eternity
Excellent post Lillycake! Here's my perspective on poe: A) Combat Combat is a bit unbalanced. Movement speed is too high, it needs be reduced a bit. 20% would be good probably. Also, the enemies do too much damage per-hit. What needs to happen is that healing needs to be about 33% less effective, and standard enemies need to do 33% less damage. The troll is actually too easy; so not reducing his attack power would be a good idea. Engagement needs to be heavily improved or simply taken out of the game. It has serious problems. Over-all; the combat is decent for this being a beta. B) Classes The classes are a different story. It seems like classes only really affect how you fight; I think that different classes need to play differently outside of combat. OE might be planning to use quests to accomplish this by making some quests class specific. An easy way to make playing as a different class more interesting is to give the player some minor talent in a story event later in the game, and having that talent be determined by your class. It may bother some people, but it would do more good than harm. The lack of multi-classing is a pretty serious issue in my humble opinion. I don't feel multi-classing would be hard to implement, and would give the game a lot more variety. Especially if some classes can't be multi-classed together. C) Lore & Story A subject that is hard to glean from the beta, but could be very important. The game has a cool history, but I'm afraid the story may lack the emotional hook to keep players interested. I'm not saying this IS going to happen, but I feel it is a real danger. The lack of a romance option (a decision I support) means there is no easy way to get players emotionally involved in the plot. OE is going to need to be clever to ensure players care about what happens. I'm about 80% sure that this will get done right. Final thoughts: Poe promises to be at least a decent game, but whether it will be a good game is unknown. Once the expansion comes out though I suspect the game will be much improved. After that; we may or may not get a sequel. If we do get a poe2; it will likely be awesome.

Hyper-Real Robots
Nope. We could just grow humans. That is; after we upload our brains into uber robots to achieve immortality and conquer the universe! so wait a minute, you want to tell me, that the Matrix robots are actually ascended into machine form humans and they breed regular ones for power sources? No, because humans are a ****ty source of power. Better to go with a potato farm.

people mad they cant solo the game casting mirror image and sunfiring everything to oblivion. That may be true of some people. If you read my posts and some others, you will see that there are other reasons. That isn't anyone since that can't be done.
