Is this intentional or a bug? It's easily tested and confirmed -- chanter phrase linger duration isn't lengthened or shortened by intelligence. In fact a lot of Chanter abilities aren't impacted by stats, which makes building them kinda weird. Ancient Memory, for example, isn't helped or hindered by Might.

1.04 Patch Beta Live on Steam
Dr. Hieronymous Alloy replied to BAdler's question in Patch Beta Bugs and Support
2nd apparent bug: new games created on Path of the Damned difficulty in this beta branch patch don't appear to have the full complement of nasties. Reloading an old save from a different path of the damned game, the final encounter at the starting encampment has like 4 or 5 baddies. Starting a new "path of the damned" game though, that fight has only two enemies. -
1.04 Patch Beta Live on Steam
Dr. Hieronymous Alloy replied to BAdler's question in Patch Beta Bugs and Support
Ok, I'm not sure if this is a known bug/ supposed to be addressed in this patch or not, but cipher AoE radius bonuses from Int still aren't displaying correctly (or rather at all). There is a workaround thoug if you right-click the power's description first. Screenshots from the current beta to show what I'm talking about: http://imgur.com/hglJnuS http://imgur.com/hglJnuS,enyoMIJ#1 Same character, same scene, same fight, same power (eyestrike). 19 int. Only difference is that in the second screenie I had right-clicked on Eyestrike to "force" the game to recognize the bonus radius. -
We tested this in beta. The strikes all hit but they don't stack on the target, only the longest duration one takes effect. This thread seems to argue otherwise? http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/75468-envenomed-strike/ It's possible I suppose but if it does work it is a bug. Josh Sawyer posted over on SA.that the dots should not stack. (Id find you link but on phone). It does look at first like they do - the combat log shows them all hitting, for example -- but as each one hits it wipes the others, because of the stacking rules, and only the longest duration one *should* stick. One way to test would be mouse over the target and see if they had six dots listed or just one. Dragon thrashed stacks. You can have 6 chanters with this phrase and they all deal damage. Is that a dot on a target or a field spell though? I thought it functioned like flame wall.

I really doubt this unless you've actually tested and seen enemies actually dying faster -- this was something we looked at in beta and it didn't work then, so working now would be a new bug. Just because the combat log showsnthe dots hitting isn't conclusive, the stacking rules should be wiping all but one dot right after they hit. When you hit an enemy then mouse over it, does it show one dot on the target ticking down, or six?

You've posted a pretty good build already. Wood elves are a good choice but remember they need to be at pretty long range for their ability to activate. For a ranged cipher build would suggest maximizing might, int, and dex. Drop con and per down to minimums and put remaining points in resolve, mostly for dialogue options. For talents take biting whip at level two just for the general boost to damage - you can only store so much focus at low level anyway. The other talents you want are ruffian weapon group (use a pistol till you find a blunderbuss;/you can get a decent pistol early by slapping an Accuracy 1/enchant on the Disappointer), draining whip (works very well with blunderbuss),/penetrating shot (needed at higher levels to keep the blunderbuss effective vs high Dr), gunner, maybe marksman. With this build your melee options are probably sabers, clubs, or stilettos, but generally I've found melee ciphers too squishy. I don't like wearing armor heavier than padded. There is a.major bug to be aware of: you won't get the added aoe radius bonus from into on cipher powers unless you right click on the power first to bring up its description, for some reason, though you generally only have to do it once per power per play session. For powers, soul shock, whisper of treason, eyestrike, and mind wave are all good choices. Mental binding is must have.

So far, all the negative reviews I've seen are grading they game based in what type of game they personally would like, not by the standards of what this game is supposed to be. The above critique dinging this game for being isometric is a good example. Isometric is the genre. That's like dinging a zork remake for being text based. That said game has some flaws, sure, but its a kick starter small budget title and needs to be judged on those standards.

Bleak Walkers are basically General Sherman: Paladin Edition. They aren't necessarily like Eeevil, they're just brutal, because they believe that's more efficient in the long run. If you want a fun, snide, self-interested paladin, maybe Darcozzis or Goldpact Knights? Each Order has certain types of conduct that it favors and certain types it disfavors; you get bonuses or penalties appropriately . http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Paladin On the other hand if it's not favored or disfavored you can do it as much as you want. A Goldpact Knight can be as Benevolent or as Cruel as he wants and it doesn't matter either way for his Paladin stats. For a Kind Wayfarer it's different.

Cipher Powers need to be tweaked for release...
Dr. Hieronymous Alloy replied to TrueMenace's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Wouldn't surprise me at all if there's a minimum of one focus per hit, or if it's 1 per 4 rounded up. It's also possible that the game is tracking percentages of focus internally but not displaying the numbers until you get a full integer. -
Deciding on a starting character.
Dr. Hieronymous Alloy replied to wanderon's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
The blunderbuss cipher was the character I enjoyed most in beta, and that's what I'll be playing for my first playthrough. 19 might, 19 Int, 12 dex, 8 con. I plan on making a death godlike bleak walker paladin and a fire godlike monk, maybe a wood elf chanter, a few other characters as *adventurers* just to test out the builds, but I think they won't be as effective from first level. If I really like them I might try them as a primary, esp. the Bleak Walker because then I could go through taking all the Aggressive options. -

That is actually a really good point. Plus, a lot of the draw of the kick starter was that as an independent project the obsidian writers could explore more mature themes and adult content. If that kind of thing is an issue for you, this game may not be a best choice. The backer beta alone had quest storylines dealing with themes like . Profanity is going to be the least of your worries on that front. If you want a pg RPG, look to the licensed IP titles.

Godlike pointless?
Dr. Hieronymous Alloy replied to Judicator's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
We don't know that it's a trap though? I mean yes it's a penalty but Sawyer apparently buffed all the Godlike racials except Moon since last patch. And it's perfectly possible, due to the stacking rules, that a 12th-level endpoint Godlike character with maxed gear will be just as good as a 12th-level maxed (other race), because there may not be any helmet in the game that gives a bonus you can't replicate with other gear. Sure, one character might find a +2 Might helmet, but you can put +2 might on a breastplate, etc. If this game had more standard item rules it would be a significant gap because (for example) you might be trying to get a +2 might item in every slot and being one slot short would mean you'd end up 2 might lower at endgame. But here the stacking rules mean you're only going to be, at most, 2-4 points or so above base #'s in any stat. Lack of a +2 bonus to a given stat is probably more of a "penalty" than lack of the headslot is, because that's actually a long-term hit to your max ability score in a way that absence of a slot isn't. The only way lack of a headslot is a trap option is if there are helms in game that give bonuses you can't get any other way, like if the only +3 Might item in the whole game is a helmet or something. But there's no evidence for that yet. Even now there are a few specific builds for which Godlike is at least arguably the best / a best / as-good-as-anything-else choice (death godlike bleak walker paladin; fire godlike monk). Once we see the final tweaks and know the full item lists you might turn out to be right, but I think it's premature to declare godlikes a trap option period right now. It's been tweaked since the last beta -- Sawyer put in unspecified changes that we'll only see in the release day patch. Presumably it'll be similar to the existing bonus which was a stat bonus when below 50% endurance. -
I for one am very upset that Avellone reserved his special snowflake race in Planescape:Torment. Why can't my character, also, be a rogue modron? It seems like most of the companions are a little bit unusual -- the snow fox ranger pet, etc. I imagine that it's because 1) it adds some depth and interest to their characters, esp. for those of us who've done 10+ runs through the backer beta and know all the standard race/class mixes, and 2) as was said above it helps minimize direct overlap with the PC. On the other hand it wouldn't entirely surprise me if they open up those options in an expansion. I'm sure someone will do it in a mod.

Also, the rare times there's a decent steam forum, it's when the game devs actually post there so good posters go there. Here the game devs are either here or on SA (behind a paywall) so there's basically no reason for any intelligent poster to wade into the steam forum. It's just a cesspool. Plus the game has enough hype to attract trolls, it's NOT the standard Skyrim-type RPG that's big these days, it doesn't even have any Dragon Age style AWESOME BUTTONS. I think a lot of younger gamers probably don't even know how to *process* this game. They see the hype, watch it for a bit, and just get confused. Why isn't the camera in first person? What are all those buttons? My console can only handle six buttons at once ! In other words, kids these days.
