Tiers to SKUs
Dr. Hieronymous Alloy replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I will post those mappings when I get back into the office this morning. Thanks! Just want to confirm I'll get a steam code, piggy, etc. Thanks!- 84 replies

Eh I think that chart has some problems because it isn't accounting for aoe vs single target, benefits of damage types, and cast speed. My cipher has done immense amounts of damage with soul shock, for example, because it is a fast casting aoe that does shock damage which some armor is weak against. Edit: also amplified thrust, while I agree it is bad, does have a cc component. Lots of cipher abilities are either more intended as cc, do raw damage, have fast cast times, or some combination.

The Cipher & The Soul Whip
Dr. Hieronymous Alloy replied to CrazedWeevil's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
From comments on SA josh sawyer said he thought it was 2 damage = 1 focus but he wasn't sure. From the testing I've done in the beta, biting whip is best for high might builds and draining makes high Dex builds work. With a blunderbuss you can benefit at higher levels from taking both. It also depends a bit on the opponent's DR; at high DR draining is a little more useful. -
Tiers to SKUs
Dr. Hieronymous Alloy replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
As stated above:Digital Pack: Soundtrack, Collector Book, Behind the Scenes - $35.00 - Hero Edition Not sure that "pack" and "download" are the same thing, which is why I asked. All I'm listed as getting in the backer portal is "digital download of the game", not the other stuff.- 84 replies

Tiers to SKUs
Dr. Hieronymous Alloy replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Ok, so as a post-kickstarter backer who backed on the website a year ago, at the "digital download" level for $35, where do I fall? "Hero" edition? Or am I going to be limited to downloading from the portal, not steam?- 84 replies

I was having overheating problems with this game on an i5 but it turned out the snaps holding my heat sink in place were ****, crappy default Intel brand heat sink. Replaced the heat sink and it runs fine now, some fps drops in combat but nothing I notice without the fps counter running. I would suggest turning your computer off, waiting a few.minutes to let everything cool down, opening the case, then going to town with a can of compressed air to clear out the dust.

What NEEDS to be fixed before launch?
Dr. Hieronymous Alloy replied to JohnnySideburns's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
My guess is that they'll either tie major balance changes to expansions or wait a few months in between them so that most people have completed their playthroughs. -
The mill is pushing the water, obviously.

I'm planning a human blunderbuss cipher with 19 int, 16 Might, and 13 Dex. With +2 enchantment items to each, that's 18 might, 15 dex, and 21 Int. In the Backer Beta that seems to be enough to one-shot a minion in most fights, it's the max Int you can have as a human, and a little bit of extra dex will give a *slight* edge with spellcasting and if I want to go dual-wield melee (which is relatively easy since blunderbuss is in ruffian group with sabers and stilettos). Int seems to be a good choice for dialogue options too; usually when there's a Per check there seems to also be an Int check. I'd prefer to put the three extra points into Per rather than Dex but Per is just worthless for ranged characters.

Take a Paladin with Zealous Focus and the Critical Focus talent. Other party members will get a little icon saying they're getting buffed by the Zealous Focus talent and displaying the +6 accuracy, but it won't display the +5% hit to crit bonus. The hit to crit bonus also isn't displayed on their character sheets. I'm not sure if this means that they aren't getting the bonus or if it's just a display error, but either way it should probably be fixed. Same bug may be present with other paladin aura talents, not sure, this was only one I had properly levelled character to test with. screenshots: http://imgur.com/rQ5pb1W http://imgur.com/rQ5pb1W,jz1aXDd#1

See screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/1whUpBE.jpg Note that the party is out of combat. Same bug happens in combat, of course. Basically it's a dead skill right now, which sucks because it's a pretty essential class ability. Not aware of any workaround -- tried exiting game and when I came back it was still broken.

Honestly the game feels pretty playable now. There are a lot of tiny things that need polishing and there are few big changes I'd like but that the game doesn't necessarily need before release. THey probably should take out the no-clip just because it looks silly and pathing doesn't seem like enough of a problem to justify it. For what it's worth I like the engagement system overall but yeah dogpiles make for bad publicity screenshots. I'd ask the team to focus on fixing all the missing strings, optimizing speed and loading times, and just general polish. -
Been an issue since forever, it seems. Sawyer enjoys the hugbox and the echo chamber more than any locale which will question his sometimes odd decisions or hangups. God forbid he'd have to defend the decisions. Hah, that's the first time I've ever seen the Something Awful forums of all places called a "hugbox." For what it's worth I disagree with a lot of Sawyer's decisions but I don't hugely disagree. The game is fun and playable as is, even if some tweaks could improve it, and I'm not in a position to know what those tweaks would cost in terms of development time etc. There are changes I definitely think would improve the game -- Perception doing more for ranged characters, a "auto pause at end of each action" button, etc. -- but these are all small problems not big ones. VV Dude, people on SA yell at him all the time, myself and Sensuki included. It's not anything like a sheltered as you're making it out to be. VV

So far I like the cosmetic changes and the small details -- Mind Wave costs 10 focus now instead of 20, which means you can actually use it at first level if you take it at first level, which is a good change. The sound seems better overall. The no-clip, yeah, that's ridiculous and should go. I mean it's not a huge thing if you don't deliberately cheeeese it but it's so silly that it'll trivialize the game content in multiple ways, both aesthetically (DOGPILE) and strategically. I still think the game desperately needs an Auto-pause option for "at the end of each character's action (spell, attack, move order, etc.)" I'm *slightly* disappointed that it doesn't look like Perception is going to get a buff for ranged characters before release, but I guess I'll deal. Probably build my Cipher Might 15 / Dex 14 / Int 19 on my first run and play with blunderbuss and dual-wield melee.

Please, please, please, please leave this in. This is the most amazing thing ever. I want to fight all my fights like this: Gee, I'm not sure what i'm looking at. Someone make another video of cool new features! Took me a second too. The guy has stacked every member of his party on the same spot. It's the reason no-clip is bad and, sigh, should probably be put back in, otherwise you get really really really cheesy combat tactics.
-
Heh, I'm not even sure how to phrase the question intelligently. At root I'm trying to figure out if a ranged character is better off maxing Dex and using two fast one-handers for melee backup weapons, or maxing Might for single heavy hits and taking a two-hander. In practice I suspect might will be the better choice just because of time lost due to gaps in the RTWP system etc. Your characters spend a certain amount of time sitting around idle just by nature of things, and to a certain point high Dex will just mean more time lost sitting idle.
-
ah, OK, it was the two handed penalty that was confusing me. Same penalty apply to missile weapons?
-
Ah, so it's not percentage reduction, it's numeric? If there was a weapon with a 10 frame animation and a ten frame recovery, 20 dex would reduce that to 1 frame of attack and 1 frame of recovery? And "frames" correllate to "seconds" how? Just "whatever fps your computer is running" ? (fake edit: how do you display FPS in this game)

Wooooo! Though honestly I'm almost.more.interested in the patch notes than the beta itself. Want to see the direction they're moving in.
