What classes for ranged combat?
Suhiir replied to Elmar's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Makes perfect sense to me, and allows for a nice opening attack. -
The 8 Companions
Suhiir replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Probably. That and fighter is the one almost mandatory class to have in your party, and since it's said he has some significant dialog concerning the main quest line this makes good sense as they can be pretty sure most players will use him. -
Since you don't really get XP for killing stuff in the game (you do to an extent, but once you learn all about them you get zip) I for one really hate the idea of endless respawns. In Dragon Age: Inquisition they've made the respawns pretty darn fast and once you're three levels above them you get no XP. So wadeing thru endless hordes of respawning stuff over-and-over-and-over is far more annoying then fun from my perspective.

The 8 Companions
Suhiir replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Maybe there is... but they're SO sneaky that even Obsidian doesn't know they're there. O_O Since rogues are primarily a melee DPS class (tho of course given they way the game works you could build them into anything) as are barbarians (single-target vice AoE), and monks/fighters (tho both are likly to be more tanky) and there are no class restricted abilities (i.e. picking locks and disarming traps) I don't think the lack of a rogue companion will be much of an issue. Besises, I plan to play a rogue as my character so I like the idea of being the class not otherwise covered by a companion! -
Best animal companion?
Suhiir replied to DruidX's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yep. The latest BB patch ... Mind you, Rangers (and animal companions) are still the worst class. Animal Companions have no endurance and go down like a sack of potatoes every encounter. VERY glad to hear this. While I wasn't in the beta it seemed obvious to me the shared stamina/health pool was a HUGE weakness, unless the ranger class had a 50%+ higher pool then any other class to start with, and this would be just as silly as the shared pool.- 65 replies

Seriously, Obsidian?
Suhiir replied to Dark_Ansem's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yep, while certainly doable it's not something the average person will be able to accomplish. This means that while their certainly will be mods don't expect many to include new or significantly altered terrain. That said, there's tons of stuff that can be done with reguard to modding items, skills, and creating new quest/dialog content. -
Rest-Spamming: Good or No?
Suhiir replied to Gairnulf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
With reguard to "per rest" abilities: It's really a matter of your personal playstyle. Some folks want to fully buff every encounter, others only use them during "boss fights" or when needed (say fire resistence when fighting a red dragon). There's really no "right" or "wrong" approach to game-design/game-play on the matter. -
Rest-Spamming: Good or No?
Suhiir replied to Gairnulf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I tend to agree. I want to enjoy the game not feel I have to rush thru it. -
Rarity of enchanted items?
Suhiir replied to Geldon's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I rather like the idea of being able to upgrade the enchantments in items. In far to many games the gear you want to use for ascetic reasons isn't the same gear you want to use for game-play ones. While of course many players could care less what stuff looks like as long as it has "uber" stats, some of us do care. -
Bad Obsidian ... bad, bad, bad. Feeding hapless adventurers (who happen to be paying customers) to your pet dragons!

Seriously, Obsidian?
Suhiir replied to Dark_Ansem's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
One thing to remember about landscapes in Eternity is 2D with an art layer overlaid to create a 3D effect. So you can't really just cut-an-paste pieces in an out to create a new landscape. -
Seriously, Obsidian?
Suhiir replied to Dark_Ansem's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
So here we have it, a comment from someone who was probably never active in any modding community. Actually I've had stuff I've submitted incorporated into/published for several PnP games and been modding PC games since the TRS 80 days. I'd apprectiate it if we could keep these discussions civil. -
Combat in PoE
Suhiir replied to juanval's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Such questions are ALWAYS subjective. To some folks any combat system thats not first-person-shooter where player skills and reflexes are paramont sux. To others a turn-based combat system with zero player control over the mechanics (other then selecting what to do on a given turn) is the best system ever invented. -
Seriously, Obsidian?
Suhiir replied to Dark_Ansem's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm constantly amused when people get upset over the lack of one feature or another in a game (like modding support) when they have basically no clue what's necessary to include such a feature in a game. Even ignoring the probabality that the licence holder of the games engine makes their living selling or renting the engine, thus certainly isn't going to give it away for free, the tools needed to actually create content for a game are often commercial CAD and art programs, the makers of which also aren't going to give away the products they make their living selling. Then we have the "minor" detail that a certain level of technical compentece/expertise, that most people just plain don't have, is needed even if you have the engine and tools. -
Character Creation Dilemmas
Suhiir replied to TheSteadfast's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm more the "Light Utility" type player so will probably go rogue as my first character. From what I've gleened from various posts and vids I'll probably stress Perception, then Dexterity, and finally Intellect as attributes; and Stealth and Mechanics as skills. Still not sure if dual wielding will be preferable to "Sword & Board", nor if it's really worthwhile to have a ranged weapon as a secondary weapon but I'll give it a try. -
Countdown to Eternity!
Suhiir replied to Mikey Dowling's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
OK, every character has access to the skills: Stealth, Athletics, Lore. Mechanics, and Survival. From what I've gathered: Stealth - All characters can benefit from this as it allows you to move closer to the opposition before you're noticed. Athletics - All characters can benefit from this as it allow climbing, swimming, etc. without becoming fatigued (which requires camping/rest to recover from). Lore - All character can benefit as this allows then to use scrolls, but really no reason to have anyone other then mage types learn (needed to scribe spells in their grimoire). Mechanics - Really only needed by your "scout" (whoevers first in the party formation) and/or "rogue" character. Survival - All characters can bebefit as this make bonuses from food (and potions?) last longer. Is the above correct?
