What are you playing now?
That's not ironic, that's a coincidence. Well, I'm about the start it now, just patching to 1.0005 and adding a mod called Float 32, because it apparently doesn't change gameplay, merely improves lighting and supposedly improves framerate(!) by 20-30 percent. Uncanny.

Viking: Battle for Asg
I suggest everyone complaining about Scandinavian mythology(somebody please kill the "norse" apellation, every time someone uses it, I get a mental image of a drunken retard listening to Amon Amarth and calling Christianity "the shackles of new faith") plays Rune:Halls of Valhalla. With the exception of how svartalvs(just grey goblins here) and Hel(the realm is partly a catacomb, partly a volcano) are portrayed, everything looks, feels and especially sounds so spot on. I was practically laughing out of joy when I met a certain fellow being held down by a massive snake, far underground. He called me a meddler, myself I wasn't sure what to believe at that point. It had gone blurry after the siege and fall of Thorstadt. But I knew I was brandishing a two-head war axe and had a mission. Edit: Upon reflecting, I know of about 5 people who have had the patience to play the game through Hel. After Hungrir and Surtr, it starts to get tedious and it's not an overestimation that about half of the game is spent in the Underworld. And there's like 3 enemy types, with hardly any variation. About the only thing pressing me on at that point was the great atmosphere. One of the first Unreal engine games, Rune had colored lighting, reflections and sometimes very large vistas which you could traverse, and it really added to the more mediocre parts of the game, like the relatively simplistic combat that, while it had a great collision detection and hitboxes for limbs heads and other appendages(decapitations, yayaa!), there really was only one attack button and the combo system was minimal. Not to mention, there were jumping parts as well, though they worked rather fine thanks to third person viewpoint. Still, the game is worth playing even now, thanks to great atmosphere, music, the love of myths and and a real feel of adventure - something I haven't seen for a while in action games. There's also the single greatest plot twist in the history of gaming.

Funny, I think that's her greatest asset. Cleric/mage is a support combination, not a game-winner. That's why I always take her(and make one in IWDs). She has such a massive amount of spells and can work in so many roles. Aerie's always the one who has that one anti-buff I was looking for or happens to have a restoration or 3 sequenced fireballs handy. She also has the handy feature of not having a pressing life quest going on and no need to, for instance, go meet a dysfunctional family or go clean a mummy-filled tomb while I'm busy looting troll corpses. And Jaheira is the best tanker I've ever had in a crpg, with maybe the exception of Korgan(because I can just haste him and forget about it). Her frontline-casting abilities far outweigh both the semi-rangers in the game and Keldorn. Sure, she's not that splendid when unbuffed, but I don't mind, I have a panther(iirc) with Iron Skins on. And no, I didn't find her character spectacular either.

Gifted, small frame, Improved criticals, improved hth, action boy, silent death, massive criticals, etc all helped. Actually, it was suicidal to go without them. At about 120% in Unarmed, mostly everything started to fall. Well, everything except creatures that resist normal damage. There was no magical(lol) edge to be gained into your damage, so you had to go with just criticals when against aliens and wanamingos(iirc). I never actually took my monk build into Oil Rig(I've never had the patience to finish F2), but before that it worked well enough. You might want to take someone like Marcus with you to clear alien hordes though. And mutants with rocket launchers are a bitch, since you often can't get close enough score the vital criticals. I remember one section in Military Base where it was impossible to sneak through as well. Still, that build is my fondest F2 play. I took most of the talky and scientific skills as well, giving myself implants, doing all quests by talking if possible, played like a paladin in all respects.

Funny that, I think Aerie, like Quayle(sp?), is a great asset to an otherwise well-rounded party. I mean, let's face it, BG2 is the easiest IE game, after the player has filled the needed roles in the party or; thief, healer(read:Jaheira), tank(Jaheira again) or two and somebody to lob projectiles and identify stuff(hey Edwin!), there's usually one or two spots open for anyone available. In this case the choice is probably between Haer'Dalis, Mazzy and Aerie and, frankly, I'd rather have someone with a megaton of spells(especially healing ones, so there is less resting and waiting) and a sweet outlook than a wannabe paladin who uses short swords of all weapons and reaches just to my waist or a bard who's melee-oriented(lol). Then again, you might prefer Haer'Dalis' attitude, as I often do. Anyway, I really like my cleric/mages, they are anything but suboptimal. Features include, e.g access to both spell-lists(raise dead, negative plane protection, prayer AND sequenced fireballs), can use helmets and shields unlike mages, can use turn undead, etc. So they can't reach all the high level spells? Well, damn. Good that every other mage in my group can then!- The Music Thread
