Intuitive Rules - 2nd Ed. AD&D vs. D&D 3E/3.5
Cantousent replied to Lancer's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
Okay, I have deleted or modified every post from page 18 forward so that the thread follows the subject of 3rd edition more or less thoroughly. In terms of DnD, I don't think experience is king. It might help form an argument and drawing on personal experience is always good because you can attest to what has or has not worked for your games. The fact is, however, that we have people with a variety of PnP experience in this thread, and people of similar experience have different views. As I've said before, in friendlier times, the problems you, Jediphile, associate with 3rd edition are the same problems that plague 2nd edition. At least somewhat. I mean, I was born in the saddle with a saber in hand. I'm reared on goat's milk and fresh meat. I practice cavalry charges with my father all my life. ...And yet I have the same skill with a sword at first level as the farmer's son who wants to try a life of adventure. As far as alan's credentials, I cited credentials in the first place because I don't think anyone should feel cowed just because he doesn't have quite as extensive of experience with the ruleset. After all, if his lack of experience means that he demonstrates faulty logic, then the logic will appear faulty. His credentials in the DnD gaming universe are not nearly as important as his ideas. Let me use Lancer as an example. Lancer is a rocket scientist. If I argued physics with Lancer, he wouldn't need to know my credentials to know I didn't have a clue about the subject. Experience with the system helps make for a better argument, but a good argument is a good argument, no matter who makes it. -
Intuitive Rules - 2nd Ed. AD&D vs. D&D 3E/3.5

The question is, how can you assess a ruleset without trying it? I mean, that's a charge you've leveled at alan. He has limited table-top experience, and therefore his thoughts comparing rulesets are suspect? For my part, I've always thought other factors were more important than ruleset. I had fun with Dungeons and Dragons and that fun has continued through every iteration. I liked the ideas behind 3rd edition. I still do. The sole problem is the whole thing regarding supplemental rule books. If 3rd edition weren't becoming so fat with extraneous material, I'd be perfectly happy with it. -
Intuitive Rules - 2nd Ed. AD&D vs. D&D 3E/3.5

I don't understand. We actually had a friendly environment going and now it's turned not only into a rant against me personally, but side flames between other member. Folks, why is this? Is it my fault? Did I handle things poorly? I really like this thread, and rather than close it, which is one option, I'm asking for help. Let's try not to hate each other for, of all things, our preferrences in rulesets! Computer or tabletop, we've all had good experiences with DnD. I beg forgiveness if I have caused grave offense. I forgive any offense given me. Let's get back to discussing the specifics of the ruleset rather than each other. Please. -
Hey, those old man's cars are more comfy. Anyhow, it has a 400hp v8. That's enough for me.
-
I'd take the silver surfer surf board. Hmmm, I guess I should put a car in here. How about this one: http://www.carpages.co.uk/guide/bentley/be...y-arnage-rl.asp Nothing special. Just a Bentley.

Happy B'day, Petay.

You mean the hundred people I meant last night? Good Lord, I can barely remember last night. I believe I meant for every citizen who does not fulfil any civic obligations, such as voting, civil service, military service, or obeying the laws, a hundred men have died to ensure those laws. This is undoubtedly an exaggeration. Now, if you'd like to point out the silly nature of my drunken ramble, I have no complaint. Poking fun at me is usually a perfectly legitimate passtime. :Eldar's smile and wink icon: However, in the larger context of my posts, and I've made several on the topic, the most important civic duty I cite isn't service. It's voting. That's been an overarching theme to the majority of my posts regarding this subject. Moreover, I am a patriot. I have every right to call myself such. You have far less right to challenge that statement. While it's probably banal to cite the dictionary, it does provide a definition. For example: "one who loves his or her country and supports its authority and interests." Now, I love my country and, while I don't always like the guy in office, I support the foundation of its authority and work towards its interest. As for our statements regarding those who deserve freedom, I was clearly excessive in my original post. However, you are completely wrong to say "all people deserve freedom." All people do not deserve freedom. If you'd like to ammend your statement to read: "No one should be denied freedom for heaping scorn on Eldar's beloved land, even when Eldar is smashed out of his gourd" then I'll agree. So, here we are. I'll let you get the last word, crom.
-
Clearly this is not true, otherwise we would not have prisons for folks who have relinquished their right to freedom by committing criminal acts.
-
I barbqued and drank like a fish. You know, there are many people in the United States who don't deserve their freedom, but I'm glad they have it. I am a patriot. May I not live to see the end of our Republic. We've sacrificed a hundred young men so that one young man may heap scorn on my beloved land. It was a terrible sacrifice, but we made it because the alternative is worse. Happy Fourth of July.

I'll have to post a picture tomorrow, dammit. I'd like to post one now, but I don't think I can manage it.
-
Dammit.
-
Jerkface. I'd write a scathing rebuttal, but we're off to a 4th of July party. Woo Hoo! Maybe I can post a pic when I get back.
-
Oh, no. I'm just a little erratic every now and then, as hard as that is to believe. That and I felt like yanking Atreides' chain. Okay, now I'm forced to post a picture of myself. I just can't decide which one I'll use. Maybe I can find one that makes me look better. I don't think the angry look fancies me.

What Music Are You Currently Listening To?

In the Sea -- America Granted, it's a song well suited for drinking, which I am, as yet, not doing. Still, the wife likes the lighter stuff and I want her in a good mood for the party so she doesn't complain about my beer consumption. -
Bite me, you little swine. And post another picture of yourself.

Pleae make comments regarding movies in the current movie thread. http://forums.obsidianent.com/index.php?showtopic=41135 Speaking of amv Hell, I'm sending this thread to the howling maw of Hell, from whence it shall not arise.

Well, you're actually a good looking fellow, CP. I'd be intimidated by all the male beauty here, but I'll just don my angry Eldar look and pretend not to care.

The difference is, my choice of rides allows you drive around a third world nation without getting hit by an RPG because the local paramilitaries mistake you for an armored personnel carrier.

If you find birthday threads lame, don't participate in them. I'm not a huge fan of such threads, but I usually post once, maybe twice, and then forget about them. As far as the Dominion Day v Independence Day... so? Maybe the folks from Canada don't care. Maybe they do. In either case, folks may feel free to participate in this thread or not. If no-one cares, then the thread won't last long. I suppose, like Mothman, I care about celebrating the fourth of July. On the other hand, I also tend to celebrate cinco de mayo with friends. It's not the same thing to me, but I wouldn't care if someone made a thread about it in the forum. So, happy fourth of July!

Get a damned haircut. Good Lord, you young hippie! Edit: ...But the kid is right, Lady. Dwelling on your own faults, many of which exist only in your own perception, isn't healthy.

Funny story on that. I actually didn't realize I could upgrade anything other than the first item on each weapon. I went through the whole game without realizing I could hit the right and left arrows to switch to other things. It wasn't until I accidently hit the button while looking at what I'd take for the Mark Parchezzi mission. Ha! The last damned standard mission in the game and I finally realize I can upgrade all sorts of stuff. During all that time, I would have been happy to get a silencer on my silverballer. Damnit! I'm going through on pro right now and I'm in the Curtains down mission. I managed a quick Silent Assassin score for the Vintage mission before I was too tired to see straight.

Happy fourth of July to all. :Eldar's toast to freedom and democracy icon:

Say anything you want about our education system in general, but our universities are not crummy. If nothing else, having many of the best and brightest from around the world attend our universities helps mitigate the effect that mentally deficient Americans like me have on the system as a whole.

And thus, amidst the wailing and gnashing of teeth, amidst the cursing and rending of shirts, the lockdown descendeth and all was quiet for a time. Until such an age where rank spammers could walk free and stand as giants amongst lesser men. For right now, however, the axe falls.

I finished a while earlier today and this game is probably in the top ten of my all time favorites. I won't make a judgement about that until some time has passed, but this game is awesome. If you're a lurker or just someone interested in a great new game consider this. It doesn't provide for easy moral answers to complicated moral questions. On the outside, it's a brutal look at a gritty setting. Inside, it's cold, hard steel. Buy this game. It is worth it. I'm going to have to write up a longwinded review and post it.
