A critique of Obsidian from KOTOR to NWN2
@\NightandtheShape/@ replied to actmodern's topic in Obsidian General
Seconded. And I always bitch about NWN2's Perf issues, but the game is quality... The shadowing system is actually extremely impessive. WoW looks crap, blizzard build their games to run on anything, the result? Another grind fest that looks very much like a game from the same era as the orginal NWN's. -

BREAKING NEWS: TIM CAIN SIGHTINGS REPORTED
@\NightandtheShape/@ replied to Llyranor's topic in Computer and Console
Wow... Volo speaking sense... I'm scared, in the same way I would be if I was surrounded by big black men in prision. -
Apple runs a strict monopoly and go absolutely ape when someones does something to their products that they cant control. If they had won the PC war, every single piece of computer hardware or software would be Apple. There would be no Dell, no Alienware, no Adobe, no GNU, no Linux.. nothing. Open source software would be criminal and the internet would be known as Applenet and it would be like a gigantic iTunes store YEAH... I agree!

Happy Birthday, I love this mans doodles :D

Things do change, and modern ATI cards and software support certainly seems better than it did a few years back. Seems like you had some problems with your system, as I have never had that problem with NVidia cards, and until I have problems I wouldn't consider changing. Tarna previously stated that it was for his "daughter's computer", and that "My kid won't be needing the high end SLI compatible stuff. I was just looking at 'bullet-proofing' her system since she doesn't live in the same city that I do." Now if you ask me, it sure doesn't sound like Tarna is trying to build anything more than a stable and capible system. The Geforce 8600 is probably the best option, not because of its performance but because it will recieve more support in the future for Vista based systems, if the machine is to be an XP based system the geforce 8600 is still a decent card, that is fairly cheap.
-
It's a real mixed bag, 8 series cards can occasionally perform better in an XP enviroment, and they tend to loose more perf in a Vista enviroment, its mostly a driver issues at the moment, that and a bundle of other stuff...
-
I'm not sure what "owts" means, but just to illustrate my point: I admit that these are chosen results (the 7950 probably won the rest of the tests, I didn't check them all) but since the 7950 is an SLI card, performance varies wildly. And on one core it's annihilated by the 1950. Still, both are good cards and if you can get the GX2 cheap, don't hesitate. You can throw selective perf data at me all day long, I really won't give a ****. Owt = Anything. The reason i bash ATi so damn hard is actually down to the fact I haven't met or even known anyone who's had a good experience with a ATi cards, and considering most of my friends are tech heads its clearly not down to them being plain n00bs. Nvidia = Performance and Compatibility. ATi = Miniscule performance increase, and about as compatible as me with journalists, unless you're "Yahtzee", and then you're cool because you just tell it how it is, opposed to speaking codswallop like some bizzare self indulgent turnip. Tarna, get the 8600, especially if you're running Vista or planning on running Vista, else grab a 7950GX2.

The GX2 is an awesome card. I have one, I've had no problems with it, flip it from SLI to single core at will... It's a real nice GFX card, it's basically just an SLI setup on one card. Perf is good, owts better than ATI.

I here that we'll still see the final book.

It's pretty good for an indie project!

Wow, reviewers are confused arn't they. I found an irony in reading that Halo 3 STILL suffers from a major flaw that dogged the original, poor ass level design. Still, despite the trend of bad level design through all of the Halo games it seems, they still awarded it 10/10 at eurogamer, didn't bother to look at the others.... I expect they'll all be licking Halo's almighty bottom and quoting it as being the dogs dangley bits for some time to come, but like most games on the 360, like GoW it'll just be an average game thats probably too short and rather boring. I also felt offended by the reviewer in his suggestion that if you're a hardcore FPS fan, then you love halo by default, which isn't true.

Moiraine? Yeah she's a bit frustrating. I didn't find book 10 all that bad. It felt like a gigantic build up for book 11. The book I like less is book 8. I've read the series a few times (I've begun reading it after book 7 was released and re-read the series before every book was released) and book 8 is the only one I can't force myself to read again. Book 11 is good. Read it. Yeah book 8 is a slog.

While that would make everyone's jobs a lot easier, I imagine procedurally generating "fun" would be one of the most challenging tasks that could face an artificially intelligent game engine. I was jesting :| Hey, I'm not actually kidding entirely. You want, eventually, for the game engine to be able to procedurally generate "fun". I just think it's a long ways off For example, you want the AI algos to provide a broad coverage of difficulty, challenge, etc. but to adjust dynamically to the player, not entirely or across the board, but locally, so that the game system is optimized on a per-player basis. That's AI-driven procedural fun. It's certainly beyond my technical knowledge. But it's what you want eventually, in an ideal world. But what I am saying is that you don't really want to have to re-design that over and over. You want that sort of tool to exist as a tool that's re-used by everybody telling stories with games. I'm saying there's code, interface and client. The game designer is the client. The code is the engine. The interface is the floaty area in between 'em. You want to re-use the code (engine) as much as possible. You want the interface to be as intuitive as possible (NWN2 can certainly use some interface intuition improvements). You want the client to be able to do what they want with the code via the interface, without actually having to get down into the code. Naturally, because engines cost $$$ to develop, you're not telling me anything I don't know. Naturally, a procedural fun would be cool, but in all likelyhood I don't see it happening because it is my personal belief that games are a story telling device, and that really requires humans. So while the games difficulty may adjust, and such, I don't ever seeing good stories being procedurally generated. -

I couldn't agree more. Accept I don't even think that there is much need for designers, the engines of the future will be so advanced, that they'll generate the world, and NPC's and everything else LMFAO! -

LOL to an extent yes that is my thinking. I do think highly of the NWN2 engine despite my griefing it so harshly. -

Scripting isn't coding. A script so to speak is calling another persons piece of code, but not actually writing the code. -

You are the shallowest dev I've ever seen type. Nah, I like MOD's, I play MOD's, I don't like making MOD's, because there is NO ACTUAL CODE! -

I wouldn't agree. I just don't think very highly of modding, unless you're actually working on the engine also...
