"But it was made for us."
Gromnir replied to Bryy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Not ironic, as don't believe pizza benefits from many ingredients. Cheese, sauce, and basil good enough. If desired to consume several different meats and vegetables, would prefer to gorge at a buffet rather than dump into one pie shell. ironic is better than obtuse. am gonna go with "fundamental misconception" rather than obtuse... just 'cause we is feeling generous. same ingredients can be ordered chicago style as ny, so your argument is specious at best. "dump" on a cracker, or makes in a deep-dish crust not meaningful if your concerns is now 'bout a plethora o' ingredients. you want cheese and basil? who is stopping you? go into any deep dish/stuffed pizza place and ask for a cheese and basil pie. is not an uncommon order. *shrug* in any event am glad we could educate you a bit 'bout pizza and to be making you aware that your favorite comic title is dc in spite o' your previous claim regarding marvel... which now appears kinda suspect. "Am not seeing how dumping a hodgepodge of ingredients into a pie crust makes good pizza." ... being ironic? dumping a hodgepodge of ingredients on a cracker does make a good pizza? okie dokie. regardless, is pretty hard to divorce dc from vertigo, seeing as dc is parent company and titles such as hellblazer, swamp thing, madam xanadu (sp?), deadman and others all had their characters playing significant roles in the dc sandbox, but whatever. we will say that another DC/vertigo title, Sandman, had some excellent issues, but it weren't a 50+ issue title, so gaiman could put together a more coherent story. and if we is being complete honest, death as a perky goth girl were admittedly just as cheese-filled as Genesis from preacher... just not in the Constant Impending Armageddon kinda fashion. that kinda silliness loses its punch after a couple o' issues, much less 5 freaking years. if meat pies were made in chicago with cheeses, sausage, savory tomato sauce and a sublime buttery crust cooked in deep-dish pans placed in pizza ovens, we bet they would taste better. sadly, a cracker is still just a cracker. as for preacher, as with any long running series, it had its ups and downs... and you do realize that vertigo is a DC property, yes? maybe not. in any event, the whole Genesis thing from preacher struck us as more cheesy than the pizzas we were discussing-- were meant to appeal to young male audience that were in that "phase." you know, when suddenly death metal or goth seems kewl. most folks grow outta that. *shrug* nevertheless, we thought some preacher story arcs weren't too bad... although we couldn't help but feel we had seen it all before in hellblazer. we has had had cheese and vegetables on a thin crust... is called a cracker. waiters and waitresses circle 'round at those parties we is forced to attend... got trays filled with such dainty offerings. is cute. am s'posing that the marvel v. dc thing is just to tweak somebody into a nerd rage. got no particular position on that as we thinks most comics is horrible, with a few notable exceptions. tdkr is one such example. Serbian pizza is best pizza.(and I've been to Italy) we has been to italy too... which doesn't mean much. origin o' pasta is china. origin o' beer... egypt... perhaps? when we were in rome we always had to remind 'em not to put anchovies on our pie. that alone is a fatal condemnation in our eyes. compare ny pizza to chicago stuffed... kinda like compare ny jazz scene to chicago-style blues. is complete different... but chicago is better. regardless, particularly in a party based game where you control multiple characters, a 2e bard is dull and sucky.... and tell us it gets less sucky 80 hours into the game ain't helping. says you. *shrug* we didn't find them fun at all, particularly in a ie game where you control a party and not a single character. bards add nothing distinctive to a party, and what they does add is gimped compared to other alternatives. now 3.0 bards.... well, they is still under-powered, but 'cause o' more varied and useful buffs, coupled with increased skills pool, they is one o' our favorite base classes... you know, before all the prestige class nonsense that Really screws with balance. regardless, trying to tell us that class X is more fun than class Y is unlikely to be your best option. might as well try and tell us that ny pizza tastes better than chicago style stuffed. go ahead, we dares you. Well as this is a brand new game with a brand new and unique system, we are all getting in to it on equal footing. Also you are aware that you have six characters, even if you picked a "weaker" class you will have the opportunity to explore all the others and as all the non combat skill are shared between classes you can't really go that wrong. you can't go all that wrong as long as the developer is consciously aware of balancing. Update #77: Art in Alpha
Gromnir replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
am far less concerned with b00b armour than we is with obsidian rationale and the way in which the community reacts to b00b armours and the obsidian rationale. if obsidian told us that the reason they took out b00b plate were their responsiveness to community's recognition that such armour is ridiculous, sexist, demeaning, we could accept that. 'course, if an obsidian developer then posts that yes, b00b scale is no more reasonable than b00b plate, but that b00b scale and chain were resulting in a 20% decrease in cpu load, we would be disappointed in obsidian 'cause clearly such reasons is wacky. in light o' such ludicrousness, we would expect the community to rage 'gainst boob scale as much as they did for plate considering even the obsidians agree that both is equal implausible. we would also hope that the community would recognize how terrible the rationale is that the obsidians is providing. well, guess what, b00b scale IS the same as b00b plate and obsidian reasoning is no more reasonable than our hypothetical. so where is the outrage? am very much aware that without community outrage such as occurred with b00b plate, obsidian won't change nothing regarding scale or chain. ultimately, b00b scale is not a big issue to us. that being said, we is mystified by obsidian explanations and the gullibility o' some folks. "But it was made for us."
Gromnir replied to Bryy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
But not at the cost of the other classes, or the overall fun game. depending on your pov, balance is always at the cost of other classes. if class A becomes stronger, then class B is necessarily Relative weaker. if class B is nerfed, class A is Relative more powerful. if you change some fundamental aspect o' combat to benefit Class A, then chances are all classes will be affected in some way. this stuff ain't insular. balance is a comparative analysis, so it can't be kept insular. as for fun, we complete agree. sacrifice fun on the altar o' balance is stupid. the thing is, Gromnir don't have any idea how to be defining fun. your fun is likely different than ours. hmmm... maybe an illustration. imagine a game o' computer chess. your computer opponent is stuck with a standard array o' pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 bishops, etc. you, on the other hand, gets to choose your pieces. some joker chooses all queens-- every single piece is a queen. he then complains that game were too easy. another guy chooses all pawns. all-pawns complains that the game is too difficult. was letting these guys choose making the game more fun? what if you had never played chess before and weren't shown rules ahead o' time? you chose all pawns 'cause you think the pieces looked kewl. with only experience to guide you, how many times would you need to play to find a genuine challenging/fun distribution o' pieces? will a first time player o' poe genuine be able to distinguish pawn characters/builds from queens? perhaps a more obvious example. the first time we played fallout we were unaware that it were stupid to choose energy weapons at start, and we didn't realize that gifted were a no-lose choice. it were very easy to make a pawn character for fallout. if we had chosen energy weapons, first aid and barter, and put most o' our points into agility (a reasonable sounding build) after a dozen hours o' frustrating gameplay, am doubting we would thinks fallout were fun. am getting that some folks wanna chance to play powerful or gimped. a balanced game seeming diminishes the possibility o' playing superman but what about the folks who don't know they is playing gimped... get stuck playing as dazzler or skin? where is fun for those folks? Update #77: Art in Alpha
Gromnir replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
They're not coming up with "changes." they already did... for b00b plate. the EXACT same reasoning applies to b00b chain and scale as does plate. furthermore, the "rationale" given for b00b armour by obsidian were not that it were a fundamental engine/modeling problem. josh stated that adoption of the ridiculous (if plate with b00bs is ridiculous, then so is chain and scale) differentiation were to distinguish male and females at a glance... and you folks instantly bought that reasoning. the only time b00b armour would be particularly advantageous for discrimination purposes, is in the rare scenario when a male and female of the same race in same party is wearing the same freaking armour and using same freaking gear. otherwise, we could very easily distinguish victor from victoria through various salient attributes. victor wields a 2-handed sword, and victoria uses warhammer and shield... but they is both in scale. how will Gromnir distinguish one from the other w/o visible b00b swell? but hey, what if vic and vitoria both use sword and board... but vic is a dwarf and victoria is human. surely b00bs will be necessary to distinguish male dwarf from female humans, yes? when you have the unlikely scenario of same race and same kit/gear with heavy armour, that is the only time such a "feature" as b00b armour is genuine useful. and please note that obsidian is not making some admittedly ridiculous concession to multiple MALES of the same race in the same party with the same gear... 'cause that would be stoopid. are you not seeing the terrible reasoning? we noted earlier, but perhaps in a different thread, that when we played bgee recently, each party member coulds be given a different colored identifying target circle. the low rez avatars in bg2, particularly in dark environments or when fighting mobs, could kinda... disappear. the colored target circles were quite useful and we would hope obsidian chooses some analogous visible identification feature, 'cause when fighting a dozen orcs/goblins/whatever in a dark and narrow dungeon corridor, it is gonna make b00b swell a freaking pointless and useless way to identify victor from victoria. and again, 'cause folks got the attention span o' a goldfish, they already changed the equally sexist, demeaning and ridiculous b00b plate, and b00b plate offered the exact same advantages. am seriously worried 'bout some folks. "But it was made for us."
Gromnir replied to Bryy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
This is what I genuinely don't understand about the current meta as we see it in this game. I probably never will, I just think balance in a single-player game is almost insanely overrated. If you want to be a twinky content tourist then good luck to you - you payed for it. Instead you get designers sneering about 'degenerative' game play. * shrugs * am thinking balance has more value than you suggest... but as we ain't read the entire thread beyond this point, is possible everything we says here will be redundant. raise your hand if you played through bg2 as a bard. is no doubt some die-hards that did so. we played bg2 bard for one reason: 'cause we heard the stronghhold for bard were interesting. the sad thing is, the bard stronghold were probable the best in the game, and it did most to support the critical story o' bg2. after we finished stronghold, we stopped our playthrough as a bard. why would we play a bard? can't do thief stuff as good as a thief, or fight as good as a fighter, and we gots a paltry spell list that makes us kinda a waste as a spell caster. in 3.0 d&d, if your DM has skill checks frequent, then a bard makes a good face-man for a party, but a 2e bard has zero sex appeal. is not simply that it is under-powered compared to other classes, but it gots nothing to makes up for being under-powered-- nothing kewl about a 2e bard. so, bioware spends all kinda effort on a class that nobody played, and made best stronghold quest that virtual nobody saw. we don't need a character to be best to play it. our typical nwn 2 characters were clerics with a handful o' rogue levels. we likes playing priests, but they got sucktacular skill points, so we invariably add a bunch o' rogue levels to a human character with 14 intelligence to gets good diplomacy or intimidate or whatever. is nowhere that we would see Gromnir's rogue/priest of hoar character as some kinda power-build. nevertheless, we were very effective and we felt as if we were enjoying more o' the game by having relatively good number o' skills. however, if we had to play a divine spellcaster o' some sort that gots ability to sneak at the cost o' a serious penalty to spellcasting, there is no way we would make that trade-off. sneak is a sucky skill that is inferior to invisibility in virtual every d&d crpg. trade spell casting for a crap ability we would never use? why? is bad balance. for icewind dale, we almost invariably had a gnome thief/illusionist in our party. a dedicated thief seemed like a waste as we only genuine needed to max a few o' the thief skills. bad thief balance meant that Gromnir never bothered leveling a vanilla thief in iwd. there were loads o' interesting spells in iwd that weren't in bg, so regardless o' power, we were far more interested in getting more spellcasting in our party as 'posed to more thiefy skills. is all kinda balance stuff that were important and shaped how we played ie games and d&d games made by obsidian/black isle. knowing what we does about planescape, would we have played a character with low wisdom and charisma in ps:t? given the bizarre xp table, was there a good reason to play a bg2 druid? am pretty sure we never chose law domain for any nwn2 priest... 'cause law domain spells sucked. *shrug* these is games, and so some folks will play to win. sure playing to win actually hurts player as these games is already made to be beatable by everybody. even so, make unbalanced content and you is guaranteeing that the folks who play to win will never see the weak content. the thing is, even if you ain't a dyed-in-wool powergamer, you is likely to consider balance issues. if choice A is clear weaker than B, C & D, and choice A not got benefit o' style or coolness, then chances are even the non-powergamer will not be making A a first choice. that guy gets picked last in every pick-up game o' basketball and football and baseball. wasted human material. if he is equivalent o' a joinable npc in a crpg, he also gets picked last. is nothing sinister 'bout it. it just is. balance is important. no doubt there is many folks who genuinely enjoy bio games. we noted above that we likes bio games. that being said, we is concerned that part our approval o' bio games (albeit increasingly marginal approval) is in part due to the fact that they is the only game in town. HA! Good Fun!

am hesitant to mention as we suspect we will touch a nerve or we will make folks think we is taking light o' a serious situation... *shrug* battered wife syndrome is frequently the result o' a very calculated and practical cost v. benefit analysis. a woman will often decide that getting beat on by her spouse is better than being single with multiple kids and no prospects. what makes such calculus truly horrific is that the battered woman's analysis is not always flawed. for the past few years, rpg fans has faced a similar conundrum: if not bioware, then who? spellbound and their b-list gothic games? witcher, perhaps? is a scary world for a crpg fan, and sticking by bioware probable were preferable to waiting a decade for the glorified vaporware from iron tower. maybe the kickstarter trio improves the situation? wateland 2 is looking better than we anticipated. on the other hand, every time josh posts about mechanics o' poe we cannot help but think he has been playing way too many mmo games. the torment successor looks interesting, and we like the setting, but monte cook's rules don't strike us as being particularly crpg friendly. regarldess, we does have some hope for the kickstarter trio... am just a bit leery at this point. dunno. maybe it is better to just take another beating from bio, 'cause what else is there if you wanna play a crpg? HA! Good Fun!

I'm honestly of the view that DA:I is going to be an amazing game. I think Bioware has learnt from the past mistakes of DA2 and the gameplay and fun factor of DA:I is going to blow us away not to be a downer, but we thought mass effect 3 would be a significant improvement over mass effect 1 and 2, seeing as how bioware had been vocal that they had, "learnt from the past mistakes." ... is some serious slow learners at bio? we typical like their games, but nowadays, we take any bio claim 'bout game improvements or features as eye-roll fodder. we waited a full year post-release to play mass effect 3 and we don't regret that choice. we got a more stable game with additional content added... but game were still kinda lacking in may ways. am guessing we wait a similar 'mount of time to play da:i. as an aside, having a silly freaking ninja show up in da:i would be stoopid, but not nearly as ridiculous as it were in mass effect 3. note to bioware: ninjas does not make every game kewler. in point o' fact, am thinking that no game were ever made kewler by including ninjas... even ninja games. HA! Good Fun!

even a game as well-liked as bg2 got sizable cuts. you probably thought to yourself that those wilderness maps that became available after you returned from the underdark felt strangely empty. well, those maps originally had more content... considerable more. am recalling that gaider also mentioned some material that woulda' developed irenicus more/better also got cut. frequently, the creator o' a thing is least able to see when cuts is necessary. as an example, some authors need an editor. an author has this Vision and the vision in his (aside: masculine pronouns in English is technically also appropriate as gender neutral, so am not being sexist by saying "his,") head is perfect. the thing is, it ain't likely to be perfect for anybody but the author. an editor is helpful in making perfect vision accessible to somebody other than the author. 'course, james joyce spent years trying to get dubliners published the way he wrote it 'cause he wouldn't let some jackarse editor/publisher mess with his stuff. *shrug* games is kinda different 'cause we suspect most cut material is not to make game better, but to save money/time. developers Vision ain't being altered in an attempt to make better, but simple to make smaller-- cut least necessary stuff. well, guess what, developers is having a difficult time looking at their complete work and seeing bloat. perhaps developers should go ahead and from day 1 plan for amputation. add an extra arm or leg knowing that near end something is gonna need be cut. am not genuine serious, btw... not 'bout planning for bloat. HA! Good Fun!

there were another beta weekend for wildstar... were effectively an open beta as literal dozens o' gaming sites were given beta keys to distribute, and all pre-orders could play. the game is Not complete and with less than 30 days til release, am thinking that initial purchasers is gonna be stuck playing a beta build and paying for the privilege to do so. virtual 1 full day of beta were effective killed 'cause o' server-wide persistent dcs. is some vendor and cut-scene interactions that near inevitable produce dcs or freezes as well. there is weird quest related messages that never disappear unless you reset ui. we had one message keep recurring from a quest we had abandoned 10 levels ago when we played the previous beta weekend. had 1 area where sound issues were pervasive and required us to turn volume off. is a fun game, but is not done cooking. oh, and amps. amps is kinda like d&d feats, though you get 1 every level. an amp might boost critical chance by 1% or something similar. the thing is, some amps is only unlocked via random drops. other amps requires that you have X reputation points with a particular vendor. more than a few amps is available only with pvp tokens. etc. having sooper-fabulous gear be result o' random number generation or obscure quests is annoying, but we get that as a staple o' these games. but having character generation choices tied to randomness or obscurity is lacking foresight in our estimation. is a fun game, but am not certain we would pay-to-play as it is now. Update #77: Art in Alpha
Gromnir replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I know. And we're already getting reasonably realistic armours and weapons, so if they differ slightly gender-wise, or if they are a bit exaggerated for greater visibility, I think that's just as fine as if they didn't. It's nothing to get worked up about. It is indeed a fantasy game. the "helps distinguish" reasoning is utterly ridiculous. honest. am surprised that gets mentioned. chances are we gots many visual cues beyond visible bosoms to distinguish characters in our party. didn't obsidian remove b00b plate? oh lordy, how will Gromnir be able to distinguish characters now that female bosoms is hidden by unisex plate? well, chances are we got characters with different kits/gear. is unlikely that we got folks with same weapon, helms, and other visible gear. we played bgee a few weeks ago, and you know what, even with low detail avatars, distinguish were simple 'cause o' weapon choices, race choices, and the fact that we could choose the color of the glowing circle that appears direct under each character. am thinking obsidian can do at least as good a job as the bioware/beamdog guys has done to help us distinguish. also, b00b armour does nothing to help us distinguish MALE characters from each other when they is wearing same/similar gear. b00b armour gots an extreme limited use for distinguishing women from men wearing exact same kits. as obsidian has already removed b00b plate, is unlikely they deemed this questionable benefit to be essential. nevertheless, they is willing to use the "distinguishing" attribute to validate swollen b00b scale and chain. is... well, kinda insulting. There we have it. Science has now been brought into the debate. Only someone like Lephys could bring in science and animals into a boob armour discussion. to attract prospective mates in the wild, some animals utilize bright plumage or pheromones. leph suggest that humans need b00bs for a similar reason. therefore, using undeniable logic and a simple syllogism, female avatars in poe need b00b armour. huh? oh, and women in plate are exceptions to the seeming need for b00b armour. ... kids, don't do drugs... and if you do, don't post on message boards while clearly stoned outta your mind. this is getting silly... or sillier. a developer posts in a different thread and folks' brains turn off? the purpose o' b00b armour is make males and females instantly distinguishable? ... why? 2 males wearing same armour is likely still gonna be distinguishable. for example, they will have different kits/gear. if bob is wielding a sword and phil has an axe, we bet we can tell apart... even just at a glance. chances are bob and phil is gonna have any number o' different pieces o' equipment to differentiate. heck, we played bgee a couple weeks ago. we recall that we could put different circles under each member o' our party. am certain that obsidian can come up with something similar... in fact, we hope they already has. and guess what? it is possible that 2 MALE characters with same/similar gear will look same/similar. duh. is there some special reason for making women distinguishable? is ok for bob to resemble phil, but lord forebear if bob resembles mary when both is wearing heavy metal armour. *shakes head sadly* and all o' this still ignores that plate were changed 'cause o' ridiculousness/sexism/etc. the differentiation attribute o' b00b plate is no different than b00b scale, and the ridiculousness is same... but scale is different. amentep wants internal consistency. we agree. some consistency regarding this issue would be appreciated. developers and community ain't being consistent. oh, sure, as a detail-oriented, borderline ocd sufferer, this kinda willful lack o' rationality sets our teeth on edge. but am honestly befuddled as to why so many ain't even recognizing the inconsistency.
