Female gamers having a hard time in gaming communites
Gromnir replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Computer and Console
am gonna concede that a place like codex is useful. "anything goes" would be a much better motto than one they currently have posted at their site. regardless, a site where you is near certain you won't get censored is good for a couple reasons: 1) there exists a forum where controversial gaming issues may be discussed and 2) if the nuts didn't have codex, they would be posting here (and elsewhere.) give the worst o' the worst a place to be comfortable and they won't bother normal folks most o' the time. also, the wort o' the worst isn't always wrong. just 'cause somebody is vulgar, obtuse, racist, etc, doesn't mean they is wrong 'bout gameplay balance or bio romances or whatever. I am not amongst those people so I couldn't care less. As for a reason, I provided one, you just didn't read. People want boobs on their female heroes, if for nothing else but to have a easy visual difference between male and female animation. A better question is, what is your reason for not having it? first, as we has now said a half dozen times, the visual differentiation aspect has been quite thoroughly debunked. am not gonna repeat again. just scroll up. so, again, why? don't just repeat somebody else. second, we keeps saying that it is irrational and unreasonable to alter b00b plate because it is sexist, ridiculous and demeaning, but then offer us b00b scale that suffers from same flaws. am getting a bit sick o' repeating this over and over. more than dozen times... minimum? how long 'fore you folks get it? ... yeah, maybe not so funny to many folks. we received some pm's from codexians that involved images o' being urinated on and defecated 'pon. must be a codexian theme. didn't strike us as amusing so much as kinda foul. such stuff wouldn't drive us away, but am almost disappointed in our self for being too tolerant regarding such. is also another example o' how codex might not be best example o' how to gets more female posters... 'least not emotionally stable female posters. furthermore, if codex had only one prominent antisemitic poster, that might be worth mentioning. "one of the most prominant anti-semite, nazi posters," kinda implies that there is more than one such... and indeed there is. *shrug* HA! Good Fun! -

we is fighting you on "why"? you still have not provided one. why you insist on thinking it is 'bout realism? getting willful obtuse on this. also, am thinking you is similar stubborn to fight irrelevant minutiae. we made a generalization as to why we believes that folks is more adverse to b00b plate... we used your specific misconception regarding scale to illustrate this point. scale with swell is a a major misconception. is far more examples o' women warriors than is scale with b00b swell, 'cause genuine scale armour with b00b swell ain't possible whereas there is many examples o' women warriors. we compared general reaction o' community to b00b plate and scale, and used your specific misconception 'bout scale to do so. clear now? "Also breast making a bulge under scale armor is not that big of a leap as female warriors." am thinking this is part o' the reason we see so little reaction to b00b scale... your misconception. b00b plate is actual far more plausible than b00b scale or chain. it is at least possible to craft b00b plate. can make plate into many wacky shapes. the shape o' plate is not all that dependent on person wearing it... though for a good fit, it should be. scale and chain that is actual heavy 'nuff to be armour obliterates b00b swell. either don't know how armour works... or how b00bs work. but again, this is a furrow that has already been plowed many times. the amour for the female npc with the b00b plate were changed. original HA! Okay that does surprise me..are you sure about that? Yap. One of codex modarators is female, another is gay. Saying you are a woman or trans on the codex, you will (maybe) receive some "offensive" comments, but most posters won't care. Saying you like Mass Effect on the other hand... or saying you is jewish. is some strange and vulgar antisemitism that exists at codex. probably get more offensive comments for being jewish than being a woman. also, keep in mind that codex, for whatever reason, prides itself on its anything goes mentality. the folks who post regular at codex know that they is fair game for anything and everything. point out that women or minorities post at codex is maybe not as meaningful as some would suggest. Gromnir is not nice, but we would never genuine suggest that the way to build a community that would encourage female posting is to embrace a Hobbes state o' nature and makes every thread resemble thunderdome. sure, is some women who likes such. heck, having spent so much time 'mongst the lgbt community o' the bay area, we can say that some folks wouldn't know what to do without conflict. that being said, use the handful o' women posters at codex as some kinda signification example relevant to present discussion might not be as meaningful as some intended. and serious, the antisemitism thing is kinda disgusting. -

Nor do I find the notion of a women wearing plate and wielding a greataxe, while still doing any damage what you would call realism... But then here we are, waiting for a fantasy game with both, go figure. *sigh* please recall, we said, "b00b plate = no "b00b scale = yes "why? " you gave a silly response. really. b00b muscle? that is your "why"? well, guess what, women wielding great axe and wearing plate does Not require a ridiculous argument. women players don't wanna be excluded from playing warriors because reality says they have less upper body strength. is not complex. that issue has been raised ad nauseum in other games and has been dismissed outta hand by all save the myopic troika developers. got some similar overwhelming argument for b00b scale? is women, or even men, clamoring for b00b scale? the reason for b00b scale, according to obsidian, is the differentiation aspect, which hiro and others has shown is complete ridiculous. so, try again: why? HA! Good Fun! ps please keep in mind that we has said MANY times now (many times in this thread alone) that we is not prioritizing realism... so tell us that is all kinds o' necessarily unrealistic stuff in poe doesn't mean anything.- 338 replies

"But it was made for us."
Gromnir replied to Bryy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
well we sure hope obsidian does a better job than did special... 'cause special is a horrible example o' balance. nope, there weren't no "grunt" response written into every ie game dialogue, which admittedly were mostly window dressing in fo and only actual changed meaningful consequences o' a few encounters. that being said, am not sure why a 3 charisma would prevent you from having a philosophical debate with a wizard. am suspecting that more than a few o' our professors at university had charisma in the fiveish range... if such a stat weren't anything other than a silly abstraction. heck, a third o' the profs we knew were probable at university 'cause their people skills and personality were so bad that doing anything o' use in the real world were largely impossible. add grunt response for every dialogue is HaHa worthy, but if obsidian don't do that, we won't be bothered. as long as there is practical benefits and costs for each ability point, we will be satisfied. ie games did a horrible job o' making sure each ability had costs and benefits, but then again, so did d&d. kinda had to depend on the dm for many such penalties and bonuses... and neither bioware or obsidian/black isle did much with the abilities. "chuckle* the one game black isle did put effort into abilities being meaningful to characters, other than as prime attribute, were ps:t, which were possible the most unbalanced ie game we can think of at the moment in terms o' abilities. nowadays we can't even force our self to play a ps:t character without high wisdom and charisma. bad design. have been playing wildstar... beta. you want link? use the search function. we has only ever used search on these boards top find our own posts/threads as it is a bit wonky. if you can't find, such threads, it ain't cause they weren't there as you can see references to such in this thread from folks other than Gromnir. oh, and the notion o' b00bs being pure muscle, while slight amusing, is not what we would call realism... though we has never asked for realism. btw, men have b00bs o' muscle... is called pectoralis major. HA! Good Fun! ps am suspecting you needs go back earlier than april 2013-- were a poll thread that were quite long an included developer input, for example,- 338 replies

Update #77: Art in Alpha
Gromnir replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
what politics? got some political agenda we could possibly be pushing? show any evidence o' Gromnir having a political agenda on this issue . disagree with you is Not political. asking for reasonable explanations is not political, though it is sadly rare. b00b plate being out of poe is your given. now come up with a reason for supporting the inclusion o' b00b scale. if you were against b00b plate, there is no reasoning that would allow an honest person to simultaneous support b00b scale. b00b scale is actual less plausible than b00b plate, 'cause while a metal chest-piece or hard leather cuirass can be crafted to hold any wacky form, heavy metal scale and chain will necessarily be formless and would also obliterate b00b swell. if you make such armour light enough to show any kinda swell, or add hard shell under garments to create support, you ain't making the scale more plausible. IF b00b plate fails 'cause o' plausibility, then scale is no more plausible and even the obsidian developers conceded this point. we weren't part o' the b00b plate crusade, but we has read the threads. b00b scale ain't any less sexist or demeaning and b00b scale is actual less plausible. so, what is its reason for inclusion o' scale and simultaneous exclusion o' b00b plate. any politics you seeing? is engine concerns what makes b00b scale ok but plate bad? that ain't what obsidian claimed. the developers went with a insta-visual differentiation tack. nonsense. review hiro and Gromnir posts above. is terrible that asking for rationality and honesty is viewed as politically motivated. what a sad commentary and disappointing. ... have said this dozens o' times now. we need to keep explaining? what is wrong with folks? is baffling. Update #77: Art in Alpha
Gromnir replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
... but it don't matter. am not thinking that people are complete ignorant o' the notion of costume armour. and regardless, the overwhelming consensus o' the community were such that costume armour that would call for b00b plate should be rejected. the reasoning were that b00b plate were sexist, demeaning and implausible. therefore, revealing male costume armour is not as meaningful as you seem to believe.the observation that there has indeed been armour shaped like a male chest is simply not meaningful. it don't make b00b plate more functional, and it not change fact that community were outraged. it don't change fact that b00b scale is no different than b00b plate as far as functionality is concerned.... and in point o' fact, crafting b00b scale would be more difficult than crafting b00b plate. b00b plate = no b00b scale = yes why? nobody is answering and the distinction makes no sense, regardless o' excuses being given by obsidian. you wanna ask: male cuirass v. b00b scale? or is some other reason for raising such an issue. why? it don't matter at this point. muscle cuirass examples add nothing to such a debate. and let's be honest, the questionable design o' b00b plate is admittedly less functional than a muscle cuirass, so is not exactly an obvious case o' community hypocrisy. HA! Good Fun! ps your input is akin to those folks who observed that if b00b plate or scale were in, then so should visible cod pieces. no doubt such observations were deemed clever or colorful by the folks who initiated such lines o' debate, but the cod piece bit lacked actual relevance.- 338 replies

Update #77: Art in Alpha
Gromnir replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
That's not an armor, that's a statue. Look again. It's a statue showing a person wearing muscle cuirass. Just Google it; there's a ton of examples. am not sure why you bring this into the mix. muscle cuirass were indeed used by roman & greek men...typically used by officers. were often well-crafted armour, but it were costume armour. show us a picture o' an english major during ww 2 wearing riding boots and armed with little more than a riding crop and use as an example o' english soldier kit? 'course not. also, and more important, b00b plate is out for poe. folks felt b00b plate were ridiculous... weren't a question o' could b00b plate be crafted. you can make plate in all kinda freaky shapes. the thing is, women is shaped different than men, and if a chest plate were designed with b00bs it would decrease its efficacy. the community were displeased and asked obsidian to nix b00b plate. now Given that b00b is out 'cause o' ridiculousness, the question is why obsidian would offer b00b scale... and why community feels different 'bout something no less implausible. muscle cuirass? ok. so? Update #77: Art in Alpha
Gromnir replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Call me odd but I actually dislike that at first glance - too colourful for a UI element. I never thought to need a different colour to see who's who in the IE games (it was always easy enough with race/gender/gear distinctions). we found the circles useful. am not a huge fan o' the aesthetic, but hiro screenshots does not reveal when the circles is most useful: in combat. particular in bg2ee, there is dark environments, multiple spell effects and many enemies on screen at same time. picture using entangle and grease as well as maybe an ice storm on enemy grouping in one o' those bg2 sewer battles ...'course you has summoned critters as well to add some bodies to the mix. enemy probable has spell casting, so expect having multiple enemy spell effects cluttering screen, and enemy melee is is gonna be in 'mongst your party... and some o' the enemies might even be wearing gear similar to yours. the color circles may appear unpleasant at first glance, but in actual combat situations, they is a great idea... and you could turn them off if we recall correct. no, she was indeed arrested... cuffed, and taken to the police precinct. vandalism is a crime, but seriously? as far as we can tell, the nyc school district has decided to pass the buck on this issue. is weird, but it clearly is meant as a scare tactic and to shame kids outta their evil ways. silliness... unless it is working. HA! Good Fun! ps for things like this to occur, there needs to be a chain o' simpletons. group o' well-intentioned clowns come up with a zero-tolerance policy. then a teacher has gotta fail to deal with this kinda thing in class. a principal is then required to actual call the police (who were admittedly located right across the street) and request that the girl be formally arrested. -
Update #77: Art in Alpha
Gromnir replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
there were never any argument that a suit o' costume chain or scale could be made to accommodate b00b swell, so you really haven't been making a point for quite some time. b00b plate = bad b00b scale = good why? hiro and others has identified why the insta-differentiation excuse made by obsidian is not reasonable. so, what else is there? once b00b plate were nixed, b00b scale became untenable save as some kinda concession to engine limitations... and that weren't the route obsidian chose. most examples ain't fee speech issues at all and ain't real surprising in context. bester random pulls nonsense off of the inter-web w/o context. as hurl points out, ny city, perhaps foolishly, has a newish zero tolerance policy regarding vandalism in schools. you vandalize, they call cops... although actually all security in nyc schools is now considered cops. have no idea 'bout the fox news thing, but who cares? we don't have state run new media here in the US. you think fox news is jerky? well guess what, so does loads o' folks. the kid with the pop-tart gun is kinda funny. supposedly the pop tart were simply a last straw kinda situation, but until it goes through process we won't know. sounds ridiculous. we can post literal hundreds o' better examples o' travesty o' justice here in the US, 'cause sadly, rule o' law often results in questionable justice. the lady is blindfolded after all. take sentencing out o' judges hands in many cases exacerbates situation. how many 3-strike horror stories is there floating 'round? Heavy metal in links or plates. is no stitch or pleat in the world that is gonna make b00b swell show in chain or scale male. again, is Not fabric. is metal. Heavy metal in links or plates. is no stitch or pleat in the world that is gonna make b00b swell show in chain or scale male. ... maybe a different visual is needed. take chest plate, with or without b00bs, and hang on a hook on wall. what happens to the shape o' the plate armour? nothing? exactamundo. you can do the same thing with some dresses. given how little the fabric weighs, designers can build shapes into cloth/whatever that is retained even without a person supporting. now, do same with chainmail or scale. what do you think happens? put a metal bustier backing into the chain, and have wearer don by being sealed in likes meat 'tween two pieces o' bread? am s'posing that would work... but can't you see just how ridiculous your example is needing to be? No, no, no that's completely wrong. I believe in freedom absolutely but not if that freedom means it offends or hurts someone else That's not something that, as the offending party...or even necessarily the offended party...can control. it is fascinating to see how folks raised elsewhere sees different. in the US we view as kinda obvious that the speech that is most needing protection is speech that is likely to offend somebody. nevertheless, elsewhere, it is seen as equal obvious that hurtful or hateful speech is not worthy of govt. protection. we has actual written articles on this subject. wouldn't say that it had an "authentic approach" to romance neither... pretty far removed from authentic. 500 miles and across a mountain range removed from authentic. that being said, while we thinks authentic romance is better than twilight as source material, amentep brings up the excellent point that the women friends o' his who is reading the romance books is not reading for authentic-- they want fantasy. dave is in the business o' selling fantasy. as such, authentic may not serve dave all that well either. *shrug* dunno. maybe Gromnir is wrong, but we thinks twilight is not appealing to adult notions o' romance, fantasy or otherwise. is our opinion that twilight romance is deserving o' those criticisms dave hates seeing level'd at bio romances: juvenile, puerile, insipid, and seriously f'd up. that is why we would hope dave doesn't let the effectiveness o' twilight romances with fourteen-year old girls mentally poleaxe him into adopting twilight gimmicks for his writings. on the positive side, dave did seem to thinks twilight's positives were largely limited to romance. if he keeps trite twilight melodrama limited to the romances, we not care one bit.
