  1. socialism is indeed glorified in public schools, but am thinking much as with democracy, too many students don't learn what is socialism. what US kid ain't taught 'bout fdr's new deal? ordinary high school/middle school teaches rather shallow, but kids still get new deal glorification, which is actual misleading given how much new deal were abject failure. and who didn't learn triangle shirtwaist factory fire? more than a few schools still has upton sinclair's the jungle as required reading, though is probable advanced class stuff nowadays. regardless, the evils o' capitalism and free market profiteering is taught in schools and necessarily you get the socialist contrast. is plenty o' socialist glorification, and some o' it is even deserved. 'course is all too rare for kids to actual learn, so too few recognize how the laws which ended company mining towns were socialism, which explains why adults fail to see farm subsidies as socialism neither. our education o' kids is having holes which don't disappear once school kids become adults. somehows, if is a government action which red state people see as positive then then it can't be socialism. is hardly a conservative-only problem as have had similar difficulties explaining democracy more than once. HA! Good Fun!
  2. have repeated more than once, but democrats are bad at voting, with young democrats being even more terrible at exercising the franchise. one o' the down sides o' the january 6 hearings is the committee is painting numerous not-trump republicans as heroic because they did not choose to overthrow US democracy. we are told mike pence were a hero on january 6, which ignores how for months pence fully embraced the bs regarding a stolen election, not to mention how he supported every other trump excess for four years. those doj icons o' justice who marched into the oval office to confront powell, flynn and giuliani's madness were quiet when bill barr and trump sent stormtroopers to oregon to kidnap protesters off the streets o' portland, throwing 'people into unmarked white vans and whisking 'em away to... wherever. same guys didn't rage when bill barr tried to prevent an ig from reporting to Congress 'bout trump's ukraine call. where were these folks during four years o' illegal and excessive trump actions? trump were improbable in 2016, but trumpism is now part o' gop dogma. appeals to outrage and grievance and attacks on education and those with education is gonna continue. unfortunate, as long as trump is portrayed as the villain, individuals such as desantis is gonna be able to advance trumpism and am unconvinced democrats vote in the kinda numbers they mustered 2020 to prevent a possible desantis administration. HA! Good Fun!
  3. denver... in march. our recollection is denver winters is a smidge colder on average than tallinn, but am admitted too lazy to double check. is quite possible our recollections is wrong, but am suspecting if am wrong, is not by a significant amount. 'course these observations ignore the obvious possibility that shady loathes denver winters and would like to go someplace less mercurial with more mild januarys and februarys... and marches. HA! Good Fun!
  4. 'ccording to the us census, luzerne county in pennsylvania is the only county in the US where polish is the most common reported ancestry. is quite possible after a visit to plymouth, kingston or nanticoke, @Keyrockwould never wanna leave. HA! Good Fun!
  5. was planning on getting a motorcycle when we went away to college. given the parking situation in berkeley, our 78 jeep cherokee were gonna be problematic. we thought a motorcycle were a decent alternative and we already had experience (limited) riding. our aunt, an er nurse, advised us not to wear a helmet if we rode a motorcycle. said the people who wore helmets tended to survive, "poor bastards." motorcycle injuries, being on the horrific end o' the spectrum, our aunt saw death as the more enviable alternative. decided we would get a nice bicycle and use bart as much as possible. HA! Good Fun!
  6. can always try a duel. the tricky part is 'ccording to the code duello the challenged party chooses the "ground" and am suspecting the shark selects ocean/sea. so monsieur bruemmer needs goad the shark into being the challenger, then demand to meet "behind the luxembourg at noon." the shark's briny hiney is done for. HA! Good Fun!
  7. kinda repetitious, but so it goes. given the reasoning o' the majority in dobbs, and recognizing thomas' concurrence as a next logical step, the basis for maintaining loving has been serious undermined. however, we will note the Court in loving were not relying exclusive on a substantive due process. equal protection were also recognized as being a basis for declaring the anti-miscegenation law which prevented interracial marriage to be Unconstitutional. so is not complete identical to dobbs. HA! Good Fun!
  8. what is with the obsidian logic fails lately? God(s) gets discussed all the time and secular dogma (resulting in bloodshed) surrounding liberty, honour and other notions is hardly unknown. try and stay focused. Gromnir is the one who suggested the belief in god has merit and value divorced from proof of existence. freaking opposite world. you got issues with religion? great. you already mentioned you got an emotional skew on this topic, yes? even so, have at it. we got all kinda issues with organized religion, which is another human creation btw. regardless, you do self a disservice if you can't be honest with self. point out subjectivity regarding honour and love as if that is meaningful? your notions o' what god signifies is no doubt gonna be different than many other boardies not to mention the rest o' the world population. if you are using such subjectivity as a contrast to the notion o' god am admitted baffled. am not claiming religion is good or bad or that you need believe. we limited discussion to address the obvious hypocrisy in those who are finding an absence o' value in the belief o' god 'cause is unprovable. there don't need be a god for there to be value in the belief, which were neitzsche's point when he did lament that god were dead. again, 'cause am suspecting forest is missed for trees, the value o' belief in god is not necessarily diminished by lack of capacity to prove god's existence. lord knows we never suggested belief related to god or religion were unworthy o' scrutiny or debate. nevertheless, to focus on the provable existence o' a deity as a prerequisite for value is indeed hypocritical if you simultaneous see value in honour, love, justice, etc. HA! Good Fun!
  9. Uvalde massacre puts spotlight on tiny police departments The criticism heaped on a six-member school police force in Uvalde, Tex., after its response to a mass shooter this spring has drawn attention to a ubiquitous American institution: the tiny police department. ... Agencies with fewer than 10 officers make up nearly half the nation’s more than 12,200 local departments, a 2016 federal survey found. In many cases, these agencies have sprung up and evolved alongside the towns and communities they serve. ... McClelland said officers in many of Texas’s smallest agencies receive only the state minimum of 40 hours of ongoing training every two years, while those at bigger agencies often far exceed that. “The state requirements are very minimal, and it’s not adequate,” he said. ... please recall it is impossible for the fed to do anything meaningful 'bout state and local police in the US-- is a Constitution thing. HA! Good Fun!
  10. had a couple three-inch thick rib-eye pork chops in a bag with (bread and butter) pickle brine and 'cause we got too busy to cook, it were +2 days before we got 'em outta the fridge. thought they would taste kinda funky, but the pork turned out better than anticipated. as is our habit these days with any thick cut o' meat, we did reverse sear; effective roasted in the oven for almost 40 minutes at 250F and then threw the chops on the grill to finish. since the grill were hot, we cooked a couple peaches. also had sauteed spinach which mighta' been arguable healthy if we hadn't used so much butter. regardless, am nevertheless shocked by how delicious were the pork as we expected cloying sweet or overpowering pickle flavour. HA! Good Fun!
  11. identify the "pot" o' pascal's wager is a droll response and kinda missing the point regardless. is admitted incredulous perverse that a sky fairy who in spite o' limitless awareness and power demands individual obeisance o' apes who live on a single planet in a rather dull corner o' the milky way galaxy, especial as a good ending afterlife may depend on the right choice o' faith from amongst a multitude o' potential religions... while convenient ignoring the unfortunate apes who were born and died before the sky fairy chose to make itself known, but whatever, eh? regardless, the skeptic rational demands proof the sky fairy is real, 'cause if no proof then is just like any other snake oil scam, yes? nevertheless, those same people accept w/o question the reality o' a whole host o' intangible human inventions such as honor and love. those demanding proof as an antecedent to belief in sky fairies most likely not need proof o' reality o' those things already most important to them. the notion that proof o' reality is a prerequisite to belief is a hypocrisy many indulge unaware or ignoring their own ardent belief in the unprovable. supposed the good ending afterlife hinges on belief, and real or not is immaterial to the question o' belief. as such, god's existence is immaterial. HA! Good Fun!
  12. have always thought people were overinvested in questions regarding what happens after death, the nature o' souls and the existence o' god(s). does that stuff matter? why? am suspecting there is extreme few hardcore nihilists 'mongst you all, and even if there were, they would have same pov as Gromnir: those questions is the least important. chances are you believe in love, family, justice, fairness or some other invention o' the human beast. in fact, chances are the things you is most willing to die for, and hopeful live for, is having no existence save for belief. bob believes in god and his deity is vengeful and hates teh gays. wilma believes in god and her deity is compassionate and loving, embracing all walks o' life. bob, in spite o' his beliefs, volunteers at a local homeless shelter and helped fund weave outreach in his community. wilma is a keyboard warrior who never hesitates to tell folks how to be better people, but she has never helped a person who couldn't help her in return. michalangelo does Sistine chapel ceiling and his pieta. jim jones had his koolaid. chances are you believe strong 'bout any number o' things which ain't objective real and can never be prove real. why should god and souls be different. strength o' belief and how you change your behaviors based on those beliefs is what matters, no? HA! Good Fun!
  13. no idea if they have the french style stuff. pasztet z kaczki is what we gravitate to, but we don't get it from tarnowski's... not bacik either though as we make our own. many delis which carry polish foods is gonna have bacik brand, but pasztet z kaczki is not particular hard to make at home and we like our duck. (edit) curious, we recall never seeing bacik brand goods in pittsburgh. if we had to name the three big(er) US cities which is most polish, w/o checking a search engine, we would immediate guess chicago, pittsburgh and buffalo. we recall a distinct absence o' bacik in pittsburgh. HA! Good Fun!
  14. https://polishfooddirect.com/ is our second favorite source for sausage. highly recommend these guys HA! Good Fun!
  15. sitting and waiting to take a first year civ pro final, am hearing a guy behind us murmuring same thing over and over. i must not fear. fear is the mind-killer. fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. i will face my fear. i will permit it to pass over me and through me. and when it has gone past, i will turn the inner eye to see its path. where the fear has gone there will be nothing. only i will remain. at the time we thought it were kinda funny to hear a dude audibly repeating the litany against fear mantra before a final, but it so stuck with us we have been doing in similar situations ever since that day. HA! Good Fun!
  16. gonna take a bit o' analysis to unpack this. will sooner than later offer thoughts, but regardless is a significant if arcane development. HA! Good Fun!
  17. for those who may have been skeptical regarding our claims o' deer boldness. got even closer 'cause she wouldn't leave in spite o' Gromnir doing a barbaric yawp and making wild arm gestures. shrubbery looks so bad 'cause o' the deer. HA! Good Fun!
  18. so am thinking you gotta ask why would a person reference a wapo story from may (edit: not march. had march on brain from the single training date for cops coupled with our dyslexia. fail) after we made available the ap timeline with video corroboration from july? somebody in this thread linked the complete surveillance video which lasts over an hour, so find the time after 11:37 when ramos emerged from the class in which he were barricaded and link to that time stamp, 'cause we didn't see such. is quite possible it were overlooked by us and is failed to be addressed in the ap article which includes released surveillance video, but please find a contemporaneous article and/or time stamp video. no excuse for low energy. as to bravery and competence and pointing... what? yeah, the events is not equivalent. nz cops were never fired 'pon by tarrant in spite o' fact the nz cops had time to open the hatch o' the subaru with the intent o' handcuffing the suspect from behind? can clear see manning withdraw weapons from the vehicle via open driver side door and then drag the suspect outta the vehicle with one hand? serious? at no time during eighteen seconds o' wapo video before tarrant gets the rifle butt and however much time it took to open the hatch on the subaru (plus who knows how much additional time) were the nz cops threatened with a firearm or the knife tarrant had on his vest. no hostages. no closed room. etc. use the two disparate encounters to compare cop actions is ridiculous and am suspecting we once again got an audience o' one 'cause is nobody who is gonna be reasonable and see noteworthy points o' comparison 'tween individual cops on the scene at uvalde and those arresting tarrant following his car crash. regardless, you did the strawman, saying we would be applauding bravery. is literal hard to find a more exact and literal example o' strawman. our response included an umpteenth repetition as to how we did not see evidence o' cowardliness from individual cops, which is hardly a strawman on our part. logic is hard. gonna drag this out forever... again. HA! Good Fun!
  19. to be fair, democrats is trying to squeeze as much mileage as possible on abortion 'cause they know that along with trump, it is the one issue on which the gop is obvious vulnerable before the midterms. pretty much every poll suggests a large % of republicans is actual in favour o' a woman's right to choose. the Constitution does already guarantee a fundamental right o' interstate travel and any state limit on such is gonna get the skunk eye even from the current Court. however, is possible some state tries and comes up with a loophole approach and fed legislation might offer better and more immediate protection as requiring pregnant women to rely on the courts for relief, particular given obvious time constraints, is an unnecessary burden. HA! Good Fun!
  20. well, they didn't actual say that, but for all practical purposes that is what is the result o' shelby v holder (2013) and brnovich v. dnc (2021). eliminated preclearance from vra and also recognized how disparate impact alone on minorities were not enough to invalidate voting limits. gonna note we warned folks what were coming... oh, and on the horizon we got moore v. harper, and at least four Justices has expressed support for the independent state legislature theory. article I of the Constitution includes the following bit: "the times, places and manner of holding elections for senators and representatives, shall be prescribed in each state by the legislature thereof." proponents o' the independent state legislature theory says that means state courts and even state Constitutions is irrelevant when deciding what is valid insofar as states handling o' fed elections. 2013 were the start, but this Court is gonna make possible a return o' jim crow and potential worse. HA! Good Fun!
  21. height of cold war reagan years, so... edit: anecdote we only had one teacher ever demand an explanation as to why we didn't do pledge. told her we were raised pine ridge by our grandfather who were still kinda angry 'bout both wounded knee incidents. we explained our grandfather had discouraged us from doing the pledge but that he would be ok with us taking an oath to defend the Constitution if we joined the military or became a US senator... he requested other situations be open for future discussion and debate. teacher were a bit nonplussed by our response but she never again brought up the subject. HA! Good Fun!
  22. that isn't how am recalling it. we never said the pledge in high school and nobody f'ing cared. got a few funny looks day 1 but by end o' the first week it were a non issue. on advice from our grandfather, we would stand with the rest o' the class but we did not recite pledge. *shrug* in our classes there were frequent some jehovah witness or other religious objector who didn't do pledge so were hardly shocking Gromnir didn't join. btw, has been illegal to compel pledge reciting since 1943. we had US government issues when we were young (still do) but much o' those disappeared when we went to europe to teach and then realized US were doing it far better than we thought. HA! Good Fun!
  23. ff to 5:49... or don't. the secret service angle is worth listening to, but am admitting we will, as usual, wait 'til we get a bit more info 'cause while it is possible the text loss due to phone recycling were coincidental, am thinking it would be foolish to not look into the matter further. regardless, why we post is 'cause you got a panel o' dems and liberals voicing their opinion 'bout a trump Presidential run and the impact o' such an announcement. don't need agree with them but is interesting to see what liberals is saying 'bout the prospects o' a trump Presidential run, yes? btw, prison and/or a felony conviction does not preclude a Presidential run. there is an age, citizenship and residency requirement in the Constitution, but we have had candidates run for President while imprisoned although they have not been major party candidates. am suspecting prison has no impact on trump popularity with his base and the remainder o' conservatives who voted trump in 2020 could not be counted on to sudden find the will to resist. repost link: ARIZONA REP. WHO DETAILED TRUMP‘S ILLEGAL PLOT TO STEAL THE ELECTION SAYS HE’D VOTE FOR TRUMP IN 2024 is mindboggling stuff but only in the abstract. these kinda stories disappoint and maybe even horrify, but does it surprise you bowers announced he would vote for trump 2024? shouldn't. democrats suck at voting, but fear o' another four years o' trump got them off their arses in 2020. in any event, prison is not precluding a trump 2024 Presidential run. HA! Good Fun!
  24. https://www.wsj.com/video/uvalde-surveillance-video-shows-police-waiting-in-hallway-during-shooting/07400042-D537-47A6-849C-310594CCD101.html feel free to match timeline with video. 11:37 a.m. — Ramos fires 11 rounds as officers approach the classroom doors, according to school surveillance footage. McCraw said two officers received “grazing wounds” from Ramos. HA! Good Fun!
  25. *sigh* where did we accuse you specific o' claiming uvalde cop cowardice? we will wait. we keep repeating the generalized observations 'bout the delay and how we believes such fits into the uvalde narrative. obsidian board posters has claimed uvalde cops were cowards due to their inaction and a couple times in responding to you we has reiterated, generally, we can't see cowardice. you being intentional obtuse 'cause this time we didn't add "charge in" to make obvious we were speaking to more than just you? converse, zor goes strawman with "Nah, you'd be waxing lyrical about their competence and bravery." you are net helping self with the logic fails, but false dichotomy and strawman yourself into knots if you want. as to police comments from the article, we noted already the police description does not require us to ignore the video. before wapo video even starts at least one o' the nz cops had time to go to the rear o' the car and open the hatch. at the start o' the wapo video, nobody were near the rear o' the car. so how much time elapses during which cops is not fired 'pon by tarrant and he is eventual wrestled outta the car and thrown to the ground before getting a rifle butt? dunno, but is so not like uvalde. stun grenades which may or may not have been available? *chuckle* a classroom situation with hostages and unknown positions o' shooter and obstacles. a shooter clear not discombobulated by a car crash. etc. you see what is clear different as analogous. from ap article 11:33 a.m. — Ramos enters the school through the unlocked door on the school’s west side and begins shooting into adjoining classrooms 111 and 112 from the hallway, school surveillance footage shows. Ramos then enters, exits and re-enters classrooms 111 and 112. He fires more than 100 rounds over about 4 minutes, McCraw said on May 27. 11:35 a.m. — Three city police officers, who have two rifles, enter the school through the same door Ramos entered, according to school surveillance footage. 11:36 a.m. — Arredondo, another school district officer and two more city police officers enter through the building’s south door, according to school surveillance footage. Then three more city police officers and another officer from the school district enter through the west door. 11:37 a.m. — Ramos fires 11 rounds as officers approach the classroom doors, according to school surveillance footage. McCraw said two officers received “grazing wounds” from Ramos. 11:38 a.m. — An unknown officer says, “He’s contained in this office,” said state police, who cited body camera footage in the timeline they released June 21. McCraw testified on June 21 that the school floor plan shows no office in the classroom. ... (edit) 12:21 p.m. — Ramos fires four rounds, according to school surveillance footage. According to body camera footage, Arredondo says: “Can you go get a breaching tool? Like for a trailer house?” McCraw said during his June 21 testimony, “So if this is a barricaded subject, why is he still firing?” McCraw said on May 27 that at this time, officers moved down the hall. 12:23 p.m. — According to body camera footage, Arredondo says: “We’ve lost two kids. These walls are thin. If he starts shooting we’re going to lose more kids. I hate to say we have to put those to the side right now.” ... 12:30 p.m. — According to body camera footage, Arredondo says: “OK. We’ve cleared out everything except for that room. We still have people down there just past the flag to the right. But, uh, we’re ready to breach but that door is locked.” ... 12:50 p.m. — Officers breach the classroom and fatally shoot Ramos, according to surveillance footage. McCraw said on May 27 that they breached the door using keys they got from the janitor because the door was locked. He said June 21 that it turned out that the classroom door could not be locked from the inside by design and there was no indication officers tried to open it during the standoff. He also said a teacher had reported before the shooting that the lock was broken. State police say an hour and 14 minutes went by from the time police entered the school to when Ramos was killed. ... an hour and 14 minutes is at the 11:35/11:36 mark (am assuming a round up or down explains one minute discrepancy but is hardly important) which is following the time the shooter were entering and exiting classrooms. by 11:37 ramos never leaves and has already shot and injured multiple cops. no exits from classroom is noted afterwards. would be disappointing if such happened, but again we would blame on leadership and we have already heaped considerable scorn 'pon leadership and their delay in dealing with the uvalde shooter. pointing out the failure o' the cops to stop the shooter sooner is pointless as we already agreed to the situation were handled poorly. for chrissakes, we has noted how the cops didn't know for some considerable period o' time the door to the classroom were unlocked while they searched for a key. from the timeline it looks as if they were spending all their time looking for keys and breaching tools in spite o' an unlocked door. serious. unless is some kinda hidden info which would exonerate, the folks in charge at uvalde screwed the p00ch and you making such a point is one o' those irrelevancies you complained 'bout 'cause we already agreed. duh. were uvalde fail due to poor training which some o' them only got once a couple months previous. were uvalde due to mishandling by leadership? dunno. you is the guy making the assumptions. Gromnir, on the other hand, recognizes how different were the tarrant situation from uvalde while considering the many unknowns regarding training, instructions given to the cops at the school and the perversity o' the universe which may have the entire delay and numerous avoidable deaths explained by the absence o' anybody checking to see if the classroom door were unlocked. they got keys from a janitor. surely the janitor knew the doors couldn't lock? is hard to believe... or not given human nature. HA! Good Fun! ps apologies as the 12:21 were relevant in our estimation and somehow we failed to copy and paste it along with 12:23
