I doubt Chris would be working on it. He's too busy at the present in the middle of crunch mode to have Alpha Protocol to be released. However. Josh will no doubt be in it and most likely to be the lead designer with the Aliens RPG on hold at the present. His points raised on the combat mechanics of Fallout 3 and its combat system reflected in the forum pretty much is the ideal guy to be behind the project to correct Bethesda's flaws.

Does Obsidian even have time to redo the assets? I mean, isn't the game supposed to be released next year? insert KOTOR2dejavu.gif

OK, I think we've already found the new in-thing to complain about among the Obsidianite regulars. When I played Fallout 3, I played a game with fantastic technology. Long view distances, huge seamless world (no stutters!), good frame rates, relatively believable physics, relatively high in polygon count, seamless day-and-night cycle etc. Feel free to explain why it's suddenly worse than AIDS. It's still the same old Oblivion engine with it's bad animations and ugly faces. They probably don't have the time to redo the dialog system either... Sure, it's visually impressive, but that doesn't make up for the other stuff. Plus we know the contract was made just weeks ago. We don't know how much time is Obsidian given to develop the game and to be honest, Fallout 3 engine is already somewhat backwards in some of the implementation of assets like animations. So if its released 2 years later, the game could already seem terribly outdated. Plus I'm not certain if the Oblivion engine is ever capable of making complex quests in comparison to the old Fallout. I can't remark for Fallout 3 because I have yet to play but Oblivion's quest are terrible.

Doesn't affect New Vegas? We're not even certain how much influence does Obsidian has with the game. Its a collaboration with Bethesda and published by Bethesda. Feargus wielding his dread hammer against the GM of the game will have much use? First step for Obsidian to be assimilated by Bethesda. Years later, we'll be hearing about Obsidian changing its name to Bethesda California. whine.gif

Bethesda destroyed Cthulhu? That's nonsense. And Beth is not your standard publisher, but also a developer, so that's a good thing. They care about Fallout, Obsidian cares about Fallout, therefor we, the customers, win. I'm also interested in the "Beth destroyed Call of Cthulhu" thing. They made it and it was buggy, but if they hadn't made it, it wouldn't have been made at all... Is there any official word on how this "partnership" works? If Obsidian gets to do what they want then I see good things in the future... Bethesda didn't make Cthulhu, that was some other studio that found itself unable to pull the **** together. They didn't develop the game. Headstrong Productions did and had made a far more in-depth gameplay until Bethesda demanded it to be simplified for the XBOX. I had whined about it years ago regarding of this, its not exactly new news.

Bethesda destroyed Cthulhu. The game was actually developed for PC and has far more in-depth inventory and damage system. Unfortunately when Bethesda took over the publishing reign, they demanded the gameplay to be simplified for the console. The developers did which is fine. However, the game was delayed for a full year before release even though it was completed because Bethesda wanted to coincide the release with Europe. The company, Headfirst productions responsible for making the game went kaput because of zilch funds due to delayed release. I wish I could bring in concrete proof in form of links, but the website of Headfirst Productions was long gone ever since it was defunct. Yeah, and the Star Trek game license had been crap under their publications.

Taking a wait and see approach. I have this funny dread feeling churning inside me whenever it comes to Bethesda as a publisher.

Of all people, Bethesda. I don't know. I wish I could feel happy for Obsidian for getting their hands back on the Fallout franchise, but I can only see Bethesda people as ones who destroyed one of my favourite game, Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Furthermore Bethesda is never known to be awesome publishers. Remember the last Star Trek games? And why Fallout 3 engine? urgh. Collaborating making games with Bethesda? I can only imagine there is a clash of belief in game design involved that caters to mainstream. Anyway, I will be just standing riiiiight here at the corner, and wait and see. Sorry guyz, but I'm just not feeling the excitement at all.

KOTOR3 is unlikely. But it could be KOFNR instead as Feargus once expressed his interest for it. But in all, I'm wondering who's the Lead developer for this project. J.E?

Hrm. What about Torn? Seen the old artwork of the game before. Its certainly does look very unique and almost Dark Sun'ish in atmospheric term.

Just bought The Last Remnant and had been playing. Cheesy typical Japanese RPG storyline with eye rolling republic villains and brash hero with sister complex. GEEZ. However, all I can say is that the battle system of the game itself saved the entire game for me.

Sawned off double barreled shotgun, nuff said. Thanks Doom.

The Escapist on Alpha Protocol
Zoma replied to WILL THE ALMIGHTY's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
God I love the Escapist. LOL -
Crap. I bought this game before realising there is a stupid DRM implementation for the game. Geezus, what a bonehead. If I've known, I wouldn't have bought the game.

The problem I think is that you'll need to have pretty good technical foundation to make such complex free roaming worlds. Stalker took a long time to be made and Gothic 3 engine was released in a pretty much FUBARed state. Fallout 3 uses the same engine as Oblivion which had foundation based on Morrowind that was made with a template based on the DOS Elderscroll games. Regardless, be it GTA IV, Oblivion/Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Stalker and Assasin's Creed, these games comes at great expanse of pouring stupid amount of resources to ensure the game engine runs smoothly instead of focusing good writings and dialogues, which involves alot of scriptings. However, that's not to say that its not possible for Obsidian to make such technical achievement. In fact if this sekret project happends to be Neverwinter Nights 3, they did mention of having a goal to make game maps to be loaded in real time and connected to each other than in modules. That will be considered as Obsidian's first attempt in recreating a semi free-roaming world. After that Obsidian could simply improve on it with future projects and engine upgrades on the existing foundation.

As much as I hate to say this, let Bethesda be the ones making free roaming RPGs. They've already got established groundwork and framework in both talents and resources to make games like Oblivion and Fallout 3. Let Obsidian do what they've always done best: Creating good games with tight narration story with a degree of freedom in C&Cs. At the most, the scope of freeroaming world similar to Fallout 1 and 2 rather than 3.

I've been thinking about these points for some time: -It involves Obsidian being extremely pleased with whatever project they signed on -J.E happends to be part of the contract So, what do you think of the chances it could be the revival of the Black Hound?

Funny though. Those Thorton screenshots does look very clean in comparison to the early screenshots. Remember this one? Hair. Check Stubbles. Check Sweat. Check. Rugged and tired looking. Check The old Thorton appears to have personality(In appearance) in comparison to the newer ones.
