Custom Portraits.. how to?
rheingold replied to Slack83er's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Hope Obs work on some more portraits for POE 2 . There is a distinct lack of options for some races. Elves, Humans and Dwarves can be found with a bit of searching, but the races distinct to Pillars, Orlans, Aumua and Godlike are a real pain, and in some cases you just can't find good portraits. -
3.04? Update on our next patch
rheingold replied to Sking's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Sabres were a problem, it had to happen. Regarding 2 rimecutters, well I never manage to get one or the Helwax mold in a playthrough. But yes it is absolutely about creating choice, now people can choose other weapons or styles without feeling they are gimping their characters. -

It is a balance thing though, and good on the whole. Sabers were overpowered. There was little point in using a 2 handed weapon other than for a particular weapon which had wounding or prone say. Now at least 2 handed combat will be viable. And there are still some good Sabres around. Just means that they are not an automatic selection. -
3.04? Update on our next patch

Thanks guys for the continued support of Pillars, BUT Sking seeing as you absolutely rock with your feedback you wouldn't mind asking some of the powers that be to drop a hint or three about POE 2? Did I mention you are my favorite developer.... -
Just to clarify Eder makes a great tank, just make sure to take a few offensive talents as well and give him a sabre and let him go to town. Pillars is good that way, you can build anyway you want but many of the builds listed are for min/maxing and squeezing out ever last drop of power gaming so a fighter tank is not quite as good as a paladin or chanter.
-
Eder some patches ago was the God of tanking... Absolutely would not die. They then fine tuned the ai and abilities... So immortal tanks took a blow from that, basically the ai was more intelligent it would just ignore a tank if it posed no threat i.e. Couldn't do any damage. So all the fighter tanks which had made massive compromises - they couldn't die but they also did no damage became redundant. Fighters as it stands make excellent single target dps characters, on top of that they are still really tough and have some minor crowd control. As Ben has said Paladins and Chanters make better tanks. Both because they can do other stuff not just tank. Chanters also get a fair amount of aggro while tanking because of their chants which makes them useful as tanks. Eder does nicely with a two handed sword/estoc and looks unbelievably cool in wayfarers armour with the stag helm to boot.

I'd try the updated build list, most of the builds there work perfectly with the companions. Just pick a build that you like and follow it, the nice thing is you can tweak them to your preference. But they are good starting points. Just off the top of my head, kubya's juggernaut monk for Zahua. Boeroers drake ambassador- Kana. His tank Druid build for Hiravious. AC's lady of pain... Ahem for Eder not in front of my computer so I can't be more specific but most of them work really well with the companions.

@boeroer - "moose" it's a fantastic name for an animal companion I now now what my next run will be - a boreal dwarf ranger with really low intelligence who's antelope companion is called "Moose" He is not the most reliable hunter in his tribe, no one ever knows what he will actually bring back. His most well known dish is "pot luck".

The difficulty still drops some at higher levels, though I really liked the story for the expansions a lot. For me they are definitely worth it. Part of the issue is Obs insistence in doing an expansion in the middle of the game which did not help game balance. It would have been much better for balance and story if the expansions had come post main story. But the expansions are great, just that it could have been better handled by the devs.

Wendgar is a great option, though it can arrive late depending on your dragon slaying skills. But I had a ranger using it some time ago and it was great. Far quicker than an arbalest and more damage than a warbow and it looks cool. What's not to like! Obviously when I say more damage I mean more damage and not dps if that makes sense....

I give this game a 6/10
rheingold replied to Reffy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
^^^ this - the one thing you can't accuse pillars of is having a lack of variety when it comes to character builds. -
For 3 deflection, sure cautious attack would not be worth it. But for 8 deflection it's well worth a look. Add superior deflection and you get a wopping + 14 to deflection. For a paladin or chanter it's definitely something to consider, for a more dps type not so much. With high might and a sabre the paladin will hit hard but I really don't see the loss of attack speed as a bad trade off. Of course it can be toggled off and on as needed.

I am 18 years old and the two other forums I frequent which are pupulated mostly by young adults and teenagers, are both quite civil. The Codex on the other hand is as far as I know also frequented by older players, but it looks like a bottomless pit of drama from my short stroll through it. I believe factors other than age have much more sway over the nature of a forum, like the ideology of its creators, how zelous supervisioned it is (for good or ill), and how "niche" is its focus. Something that attracts a select yet loyal on-line following can serve as a bridge between members, but if it is too small, it has the risk of lacking diversity of opinions and becoming clannish and aggressive towards outsiders. I would say the PoE forums in general stand on a sweet spot, but that may also be because the more aggressive members got tired and left. Fair enough - I'm just kinda tired of some of the really obnoxious forums. But whether or not it is an age thing is my impression which could very be wrong. In fact, now I think about it - people are allegedly supposed to get wiser with age - which is most definitely not the case in my experience, so yeah I guess obnoxious people are well just obnoxious....

Chanters are more than fine as is. On any difficulty. If you don't like dragon thrashed then try using shorter chants and more lower level invocations. Or you could use the cold damage spell which could possibly out damage a dragon chanter. Certainly it does more burst damage which can be very useful. Don't like that, use a gun chanter! Or maybe one as an off tank. So many options. Sure if you want a more direct type caster who can nuke at the beginning of the battle there are better options. But chanters are excellent support characters and can be built in a number of ways. Obviously the mechanics were designed to differentiate between vancian casters and the others, and to a large extent they have succeeded. If chanters could cast straight off you would have to seriously nerf their invocations or they would be completely overpowered. Obs actually have a pretty good track record with bards - and I include chanters in that. While bards in most games or pnp were pretty sad, the NWN2 bard was awesome. It's great to have a worthy successor...

Class popularity
rheingold replied to hrwd's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Mmm, should probably not have a simple poll on this but rather ask people to list their top and bottom 5 classes. Or even ask people to rank them top to bottom. The problem with the poll at the moment is that for me and presumably some others there are several options available and it depends on the day. For the record I voted Druid for favourite but Chanters, barbs and rangers are up there.... -
Try the darn ogre bounty in Elmshore - upscaled. It's insane - but strangely enough only the ogres outside of the cave are tough - the actual boss is fine - almost like the upscaling only applies to the exterior map and not to the interior. But those ogres outside are unpleasant, really unpleasant. I was 13th level and had to use a bit of cheese the last time I picked a fight with them.
