Funny thing about games and devs... They don't force you to buy their games or participate on forums at gunpoint. I get why some people don't like Pillars, or rather I understand how some people can hate something I actually like. Or vice versa. Obs certainly pay more attention to their fans than other devs which is actually a good thing, but to be honest making and buying games is a business. When it gets to the point that you start taking everything a developer does personally you probably need to take a step backwards. I personally was very disappointed with DA I, but bitching and moaning about it is silly. The devs have chosen a different direction, and that's ok. I just won't buy their games again. If people don't like Pillars just move on. It's not personal I promise.

Storm in a t cup time. Hasn't said much. Bottom line - only people who actually know the real story are the people involved - and there is always 2 or more sides. Regarding Obs selling out - well if it's the owners right to sell the company if they can or want to. It could be good or bad, it's impossible to say now. To be honest this interview is not really newsworthy, nothing has actually been said of any import. I like Avellone and Obs and as long as they make games I like, I'll be happy regardless of where they end up. If they change their market I won't go with them though. I will still appreciate the work they have produced now and in the past.

Found a cipher with mental binding pretty much paralyses the wraiths and battery sirens almost all the time. It only effects one at a time though, but it makes it really easy to kill them quickly. I'd also move past the key to the left as far as possible, so you bunch up at the dead end. It might prevent one or two of the wraiths/sirens from attacking you. Focus fire also helps.

Not excited about Tyranny, rather waiting for some info- any info about POE 2. Will probably put Pillars and the Wild Hunt aside for a while, a long while, though will still be on the boards. Looking forward to Dishonered 2, The Dwarves, OS 2 - all which I have brought. Will probably fire up Skyrim enhanced edition for a playthrough as well. Also looking forward to Deliverance but no idea when that is slated for release.

Hmmm, I like going mostly melee. Favourite classes, Druid ,chanter, ranger, paladin, monk and barb. Don't like priests or wizards So for a power party out of that, I'd probably go for a tank chanter and Druid. Dual wield barbarian with wetoki. Juggernaut monk. Tidefall kind wayfarer and riptide ranger. Ranger and chanter would have high lore and use scrolls. All melee in heavy armour. Pretty much blitzkrieg all opposition, it's definitely not the most subtle approach but loads of fun. And brutally effective. Of course having a wizard/priest/cipher would help power wise but I don't like them.

Psychic backlash

Uh thanks, unfortunately I'm on Gog so I don't follow the beta patches. Thanks for letting me know. Guess I'll have to wait a bit. -
Psychic backlash
rheingold posted a question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Hi all, so I have a cipher for the first time and I took psychic backlash. Not having a great deal of experience with cipher I naively presumed the idea was for the ability to stun the opposition not the cipher. Sadly though, for some reason my cipher is stunned for 2 seconds in the beginning of combat - all combat. Seems quite a suicidal ability if it's not a bug.... At the moment he is definitely a leading contender for the Darwin awards. -
Rapier in the main hand and dagger (specifically a main-gauche dagger) is probably the quintessential dueling combination. You can also guarantee that almost every single knight who ever rode into battle in Europe had a dagger as a secondary or tertiary weapon (as would any soldier who could afford one in addition to their primary weapon). Honestly, daggers were probably the single most widespread weapon in this period (and maybe all of European history). Their association with rogue type characters probably comes from two things: (i) a dagger is a lot cheaper than a sword, since there is a lot less metal involved in its construction and (ii) they can be easily concealed. That said, I suspect a lot of bandits and cut purses in medieval and renaissance Europe will have actually used knives rather than daggers since knives will have been cheaper and more widespread amongst the sort of people likely to turn to such occupations. But the image of the dagger as solely, or primarily a thief or assassin's weapon is very much the creation of modern fantasy writing. And by all accounts it's the single best dueling combination. At least according to Hema. It's really difficult to counter a rapier/combo from what I've seen. And there's an awesome rapier and dagger available very early on in Defiance bay for those interested in a dueling like character.

Unfortunately not in the early levels. Which stinks considering there are tons dwarf fans out there. I would of loved an early Unique Battle Axe. Instead we're stuck with Hearth's Harvest at best. There is a decent axe early on. By decent I mean it doesn't have any special abilities but it is exceptional. Can be brought from the gentlemans club in DB. Put a lash on it and it will last a fair amount of time. In fact there are a couple of great weapons there, including an excellent rapier and spear and a couple of exceptional weapons which you can get really early on. It's normally my first stop after when I reach DB.

I'm not for a minute suggesting that Ciphers don't shine on hard. Just that they don't compare in my experience to a rogue. I find that crowd control on hard and below is a tad overated. Rogues just kill things really quickly. Yes they are pretty one dimensional but as far as doing what they were designed to do they are very efficient.

Survey for the future
rheingold replied to Sking's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
^^^ Bioware got the thumbs down from me - as well as Blizzard and Bethesda. Felt really good... -
^^^ On hard or below, nothing comes remotely close to a dual wield rogue. Which is their function. Could be that you just don't like their playstyle? But they are not weak, and there is no class which is on the same planet in terms of single target dps. Cipher certainly can't compete dps wise. But moving to Potd becomes a major problem. The extra accuracy, defense and health that opponents receive pretty much neutralizes all a rogues positives and enhances the negatives.
-
hmmm, Rogues mainly suffer on Potd, on any other level they are actually very good. I've had a couple of playthroughs on hard with a rogue and he has certainly held his own. With out min/maxing or using a shield. Done an insane amount of damage and is actually quite fun to manage. But they struggle quite a bit on Potd. Not sure what the solution is though... because buffing them overall would make them overpowered on any other difficulty. EDIT: Boeroer's point about starting stats is a good one. Giving them better endurance, health and deflection would help quite a bit.

Just bear in mind that many of these expert folks have put in hundreds if not thousands of hours. It has very little to do with ai, or the difficulty of the combat but rather that when you know each map and its contents backwards and the ruleset perfectly things tend to get easier Many people who start the game in fact complain of its difficulty, certainly most of the reviews mentioned it. Many, many hours later I find its not that difficult anymore. Point is I doubt people on this forum qualify as the average gamer who might just finish the game once without an encyclopedic knowledge of the games finer points. Under those circumstances the game is tough, and PoTD is presumably a real pain in the ass.

Character picture issues
rheingold replied to hrwd's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
^^^ I think it's a great option to have as long as they still have/create regular portraits. Might be worth adding in the survey, I'll check if I can do it twice. -

Definitely agree - more portraits would be nice - particularly Orlan and Aumaua, but while changing colours on a portrait is fairly easy using photoshop, illustrating them in the first place is not. Obs presumably have limited resources and can't afford to have an artist tied up drawing new portraits. The colour changes are generally easy enough for people to do them selves - if they have the software. Fortunately I have photoshop - not to sure how well Gimp actually stacks up againt it. -
mmmm, I've found a chanter to be a better tank than a paladin to be honest. Just add some constitution and the saves are great. High deflection, saves and pulls some serious aggro. They make perfect tanks.
