  1. It does, but I thought it was an interesting question - mostly in regards to when large galaxies collide (which they do).. But I guess their path could've been diverted "early" by a blackhole or something heavy. Well, that's settled .. I guess he wasn't a very good engineer! Thanks guys.
  2. Maybe someone here can help me out with this.. I overheard a rather interesting discussion today in a cafe between what appeared to be an astrophysicists and a friend who was probably an engineer of some sort - they were discussing the theory of the Big Bang. The discussion ended in a stalemate, but some interesting points were raised. 2 arguments that were not rebutted: The "Pound Rebka eksperiment" used to prove Einsteins theory of relativity overlooked an important issue - radio signals from geostationary satellites should experience a "blue shift". But the time delay from the satellites are constant. 2 galaxies should not be able to collide if all motion originated from a common source (big bang) Is this bull?
  3. Replace illuminati with Camarilla ad you have a good roleplaying setting.
  4. Maybe he feels like he needs to get something out of the money he paid for it?
  5. Me thinks you are pulling an april fools disguised as another man's april fools! Anywho, you made me visit the forum and read some interesting threads - so all is forgiven. edit: scratch that - logged in and played the adventure.
  6. Not particularly funny - but I find it quite thought provoking. I can't quite formulate this clearly so bear with me - I can't undo my world view and try as I might, I see the "old world", even though it's reversed and I should focus on the new landmasses as the important features.
  7. It's out and I've looked at it, but it seems a little too "consoley" for my taste..
  8. Playing with any mods? I'm messing around in Europe 1257.. Conquering those pesky Swedes.
  9. I checked in to see the newest mods for New Vegas - and one called "Ojo Bueno HQ textures" really caught my eye .. it's just beatiful. (not technically my screenshots - but I had to share this)
  10. I agree.. SWAT 4 was the last of the (actual) tactical FPSs. Which is a damn shame. L4D is probably the best modern candidate (as opposed to other newer games that claim the title), which tells you how sad the state of affairs is. Not to bash L4D of course, it's a great game in regards to Steam - I've bought Shogun 2 and Napoleon Total war (as it was dirt cheap a few weekends ago), so I'm kneedeep in arcade-strategy. Shogun is a blast and absolutely recommendable to fans of the series.
  11. I'll be sending some mulah your way. Sounds like a good initiative.
  12. My dictionary translated the word "udslusningshjem" to "halfway house".. after a quick google search that term seems to be correct. The one I worked with was generally people who came from violent homes and usually with drug abuse. There haven't been done any real research (so far it's all anecdotal) on whether or not this works. I can only account for what happened when I was there. The general idea was however to find the root of the problem and deal with that, every pedagogue/employee either had or was given courses to help them recognize drug abuse, depression, some mental disorders etc. So when a problem occured (and they did - a lot) we we have a better idea how to respond ie. whether to send them to a shrink, put them on medication etc. But most importantly, the employees understood that most of these guys have never had a positive rolemodel, they've been beaten, kicked around and abused so many times that they've learned how to survive no matter what .. that needs to be "un-learned" before any real progress can happen. They need to trust again and to do that you need a system that works for them, not against them.
  13. And I have a banhammer - so I win the discussion.. Everyone back to their corner and wait for the bell.
  14. UK prisons aren't the Playstation-and-satellite-TV nirvanas the tabloids portray* but neither are they Escape from New York. They are grim, undoubtedly. I know this mainly because I had to visit a friend who found himself in a Category 'C' prison. * We leave that to the Scandies. Apparently our system works? link - uk data. But seriously - we have the same problem - luckily for us, in regards to criminality, our culture is so homogeneous that crime tends to be a social stigmata. I've worked in a rehabilitation institution as some of you might recall - where people were send when they needed psychiatric help, but weren't messed up enough to get into a psych ward.. We had a lot of violent people, yet after about an average of 5-6 years, a lot of them were usually able to go back out into society, keep a job and even get an education. I'm still in touch with a few of them and a girl (who had done some burglaries and drug trafficking) has completely turned her life around and is now on her way to becoming a teacher. Another is a busdriver in Copenhagen (he used to mug people and even kidnapped a family by mistake when he needed an escape vehicle) - now the normal thought here is "why does that guy deserve a break?" but I think that system worked very well as a supplement to jail, if they didn't follow our rules they would have to serve time, which proved to be a good motivator. And now they are actually paying taxes instead of costing millions and doing nothing.
  15. well, when you put it that way...
  16. indeed.. Thanks though, it seemed as if you were simply brushing this off without much thought - which I'm glad was not the case at all.. I'll return with a response tomorrow evening, when I have a little more time to compile my arguments.
  17. You are presenting a lot of opinion as fact - although none of them are backed up by any evidence.. [1] - is this an argument against this kind of school? Because if it is I see you haven't read or seen any of the information I presented. [2] - Based on what? There are a lot of approached to stop bullying. Something Denmark has researched into on a number of occasions. One of the most effective is actually a "children's court" where the bully is tried by peers. Incidentally this is also what the Democratic school does. (for the American approach you can see this website) [3] - only by your logic. Do some basic research and you will see this to be very false. [4] - again, based on what? I saw the kids excel at Math far beyond their age-group. Try reading the theories of Lev Vygotsky regarding social development and learning. What theories are you referring to? [5] - apparently there is. I agree however that, in the current system, there isn't a fun way.
  18. It's important to remember that this is only for elementary school and that this is not meant for the higher educations.. I don't think we are quite ready for this in high school/college or universities yet. The Danish variety isn't that hippie.. I've met a few of the students (a 6 year old and a 14 year old) and they were both years ahead of kids their age - so articulate, critical thinking and literally brimming with excitement about almost all subjects. I could really feel that knowledge was something that was important and very alive for them. I was downright scared at their ability for lateral thinking - it was beyond anything I had seen in normal public schools.. And these kids weren't from super homes - their parents were normal 9-5 workers. The 14 year old was even from a single parent home, where the mother had to work 2 jobs.. so it's not like they have more resources at home. It exists for a reason in high school, college and university - but why in elementary school? Kids are amazing at learning when we give them the freedom to do it .. I think it's quite interesting that a kid has no problems learning 5 languages if they are spoken in their home, but have trouble learning 2 languages that are taught at school.
  19. Do we in fact really need such systems at all?
  20. "Apparently God hasn't forgotten about Pearl Habour either" - I'm speechless..
  21. There's a school here in Denmark called " l" - and they are teaching kids in a very different way than schools have done since the invention of said institution. The idea is basically that kids want to learn, they are designed to learn - and a pre-school should be a place to foster and develop this desire. It should also be a place that encourages democracy, respect, diversity and curiosity. From Sudbury Valley School (an American version that the Danish school was inspired by - here's a by them) Some of the theories behind it are pretty nicely explained by , a world-renowed expert on creativity, learning and education (he was knighted because of his contributions to the field).. I have to say, this is seems so profoundly self-evident that I'm pretty appealed that it's not more widespread - but maybe that's just me? Don't you guys agree this should be the school of our time.. or?
  22. Well it's not that expansive.. and I imagine that it's similar to Deomcracy (although I haven't tried that) There is 1 tutorial'ish levels (develop Africa), 1 practice (oil crisis) and 2 big ones[ (keep the temperature change under 3 degrees / destroy the Earth). Each missions has 1 overall goal, but several conditions.. For instance in the big campaign from 2020 to 2200 where you only goal is to keep the temperature down, you also loose the game if you are expelled from more than 8 regions or the average HDI of the world falls below 0,5. Where the variety comes in is that you can attack the problem from a lot of directions - you may decide to stave off economic recession and/or develop the 3rd world and use the increased revenue to win with technology (this will cause massive global changes though). You may try to balance recessions with climate concerns and allow some rather nasty economic catastrophes in order to prevent natural disasters (people will hate you though) - or you may try to take a sinister approach and develop a gene-virus that kills off the 3rd world, or any region you don't like (if people find out however). Or you might try to combine them all - money is always a concern though and many of your plans are disrupted because of lack of funding. I haven't found out which is best, but I'm sure that once you find out, then the game becomes repetitive. But as I've said I haven't found an approach yet. I've played about 5 games and have put 17 hours of good fun into it so far. So I think I've gotten my money's worth. The learning curve can be a little frustrating at times though.. I for one have tried several things I was sure of, only to see the entire world break apart because of massive wars and hunger. It's very good far that - I've learned a lot.
  23. I have it and I quite like it. It really depends on what you want from a game, it is like a card game - but you don't really think of it as cards, more like policies.. It's a very difficult game though - especially the big challenge of keeping the temp. rise under 3 degress. But I recommend it. Here are some screens from my game.
  24. I'm playing Magicka win some friends on Steam - it's seriously one of the best indie games I've ever played.. it's hilarious, but only in coop. Rock-paper-scissor 7-3-0 .. I always win this game. (edit: my hubris apparently infuriated the computer and it promptly evened the score in the next 10)
  25. From the article: I pretty convinced life exists out there in the great beyong, but apparently it doesn't have a habit of raining down on us in meteorites.
