Except that Might is also used for physical intimidation. So it is clearly both "physical might" and "soul might" or whatever you want to call it. I would buy into this mechanic more if they didn't use Might for physical intimidation events. Might is both. Might is raw power; it's amount of raw power your soul can generate, manifested as either physical strength or magical potential but always from the same source. The lore says that even fighters, through years of martial training, use their soul energy to perform superhuman feats.

I'd rather I be treated like an adult who can make my own ****ing choices about what language I find acceptable rather than have everything sanitized like a child's bedtime story, thank you very much. I know that's meant as a joke, but it's literally true. Part of being a grown-up is making your own choices and accepting the consequences. When people sanitize and censor media, not only does it cheapen and demean the work produced but it actually forces other peoples choices of what is and is not appropriate onto me. That's something that is okay to do to a 7 year old, but not to other adults.

Sax mods?
Katarack21 replied to Nukenin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Meh. I'm not into smooth jazz. -
It's amusing to me that there are people posting here who refuse to believe that others aren't having these awful terrible problems. I see this in every newly released game; my basic conclusion is that there are people who would just plain be happier if they bought games a few months after release. Because I can tell the difference between software that just doesn't work (which is my definition of "broken"), software that crashes for a lot of people a lot of the time (hello Fallout New Vegas!), and software like PoE that's basically very stable, with a couple of minor glitches that will be forgotten in a couple of weeks. I think that the people who scream and yell about bugs are the ones without perspective. If you see a bug, report it as clearly as you can so that it can get fixed. Games where a lot of people have problems are games where the forums light up like a Christmas tree. The fact that this forum *isn't* doing that is a pretty clear sign that the bugs aren't nearly as big of a deal as people are claiming in this thread. Oh, bugs are a real thing. That's true; however, only a small percentage of people are being effected by them. Their are 77k+ backers with a copy and the untold thousands sold to others. Go and look at the technical report forum again and tell me how many people are saying the game can't play. That it literally is broken and cannot be finished. Perspective is important--and part of that is realizing that for most people playing it the game is fine. It's not "broken" in any real sense. This isn't KOTOR 2 or VtM:B, where the game is literally unworkable for anybody and has to be patched six times before it'll function at all. This is a normal game release where a small portion of the players encounter a major bug of some sort, and the dev team is working on patches for those bugs. That's it.

Stealth WTF
Katarack21 replied to Brimsurfer's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Higher stealth should increase the time it takes for your circle to fill with yellow and then red when you are stealthed and being observed. -
I do not know the ending. I'm only in Defiance Bay, myself. But I've come to a theory. At one point it's mentioned that souls lose pieces of themselves every time they reincarnate--and sometimes gain back more than they lost, but usually diminish. I think the gods are gestalt souls--people from an ancient empire who used a form of animancy to steal tiny little bits of other souls and add them to their own, en masse, and became gods when they did it. I think the MC is the reincarnation of the soul of Eothas after his death in the Saint's War, and the visions are of the time when all the "gods" did this. Just my working theory.

Even an 8-bit Windows 3.1 game made using windows icons and the default color palate, by one guy over the course of a week in 1989 (Castle of the Winds), still had bugs in it. You cannot make a bug-free game, period. That being said, I've encounted exactly one bug and I'm 80 hours into this game. It's looking like a win to me.

Stealth WTF
Katarack21 replied to Brimsurfer's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Don't backstab from stealth mode. Backtab from invisibility using Shadowing Beyond. That's twice per rest, so save it for big bad mofos. For plain old sneak attack, you can use stealth to attack from. Either way, you avoid repercussions with Escape, Coordinated Positioning, etc. -
Enemies Regenerate HP
Katarack21 replied to Darg's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Enemies who have fighter abilities regenerate endurance just like any fighter. -
This game is amazing. I'm about 80 hours in and it's AMAZING. I haven't hit any major bugs except Raedrics hold bug, and I had a save just before I opened the bugged map. Other than that it's been clear sailing. I love the companions most of all, actually. Their all so cool and well-written I'm actually torn between who to leave behind and who to take with me. I want ALL their stories! I find them to be much more mature and complex than the companions from BG and BG2 from a writing perspective. Eder is funny, for example, but he has the world-weary cynical humor of somebody whose been lost for a long time and isn't sure they'll ever find their way again--as opposed to the straight out jokes of the companions in BG2.

Why the hype?
Katarack21 replied to SKull's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
What? That doesn't make any sense at all. IWD was a hack-and-slash dungeon crawl with a thin veneer of a plot and no story companions. This is....not. -
The main problem with them is that they break one of the fundamental conventions of CRPGs - that those people who are unimportant don't get names and that characters with names should be talked to if possible. In other words, that unimportant background characters whose main job is to be there such that a setting doesn't seem unpopulated are, at the same time, clearly distinguishable such that players don't waste time on interacting with them. By giving them names, even if with a different backlight, you are indicating to players that these are important and should be talked to as. To make it worse, it requires your very special soul reading ability and plays a sound and graphic effect when you do it, you know, just like that very important event right at the start of the game. Players who don't start out knowing that it is a waste of time unless you want to read flavour stories that are irrelevant to the setting and to the game's story are going to spend a lot of time reading/skimming them and activating soul reading just in case this next one is the one that actually does something. Eventually they will eventually learn it, but even then it adds to the time it takes for a player to get a quick view of who are important in a given setting, because the mind is much better at automatically sorting people by whether they have generic names that appear all over the place, like four commoners next to each other, or unique names, than by sorting them by whether their names have one backlight or another. It is a completely different issue with tombstones/testimonials. Those are normally used in CRPGs to list jokes, silly verse, RIPs, and real world references and not to provide useful information except in the cases where there's a specific mission to find some useful information on a tombstone, and they aren't spread out everywhere but collected in a few locations. Fleshing out the game with named characters that are utterly irrelevant to the plot instead of just adding a bunch more generic people with professions rather than names was, as far as I am concerned, a bad idea where gameplay is concerned. It helped rake in the money, though, so there is that. It just makes for an ever so slightly worse game. So...basically...you're pissed off because the backer NPC's break your immersion by disrupting your ability to use your knowledge of tropes to metagame. Okay then.

Pillars of Metagaming
Katarack21 replied to luzarius's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Well...I guess that's fair. I'll say this; I went in on normal with my squishy MC, Eder, and Aloth and it was no problem at all. Not any harder than any random forest encounter, and easier than some (I'm looking at you, Forest Lurker!) -
