  1. Sawyer is a little bit of an RPG snob/elitist. Over the years I've noticed a real tendency for him to look down on and subtly (or not so subtly) insult people who are real dedicated D&D enthusiasts. He seems to act as if being into obsure RPG systems means he's more knowledgable and a superior gamer. He's basically a pen&paper hipster. If you're referring to this post I think you're misreading it. He directly states that he has played, and enjoyed, pretty much every single edition of A/D&D. He is stating the people who are invested in the edition wars of D&D, specifically, are a group of people who tend not to play any table top RPGs other than variants of D&D. Which is generally true. Or, you know, it's a stereotype of a large and diverse group of people whose only commonality is being nerdy enough to argue about a particularl game system that is particularly important to them. It doesn't actually say anything at all about what other games they play. Not a thing. Just that this particular game system is important to them. I argue like ****-all about Star Trek, but you can't judge *anything* about what other fiction I enjoy based on that. Same here. It's Josh Sawyers personal opinion, based on his assumptions about people who play D&D. Note that while Josh says he's played every edition of D&D, he also says he's enjoyed other games far more. He's a fan of D&D, but he's not a *FAN* of D&D. He's played it as part of his general interest of playing RPG's, and enjoyed it. It's not his favorite, and he'd rather play others. He specifically points out flaws in D&D as reasons for doing things certain ways in PoE, as well. Look. I don't know Josh. Neither do you. We're both making assumptions here based on what little we know based in interviews, forum posts, etc. All I know is that Josh Sawyers body language, mannerisms, statements, and complaints in the past have led me to the conclusion that he is the kind of RPG player I've met in the past who vaguely looks down on people who play D&D regularly and tries to get everybody interested in this new obscure system that nobodies heard of instead. You can see some of that in the interaction between him and Null in the video today. Clearly the two get along, but there's a little bit of real ****-eating in Josh's smile when he turns to Null and says "And what about your favorite system?" and there's a little real hesitation in Null--a little stammering, a glance at Josh's eyes, etc.--before he starts to discuss (reluctantly) his love for 3.5. You can tell this isn't a new conversation and it's not a topic Null is eager to pursue again. That kind of thing, little hints like that. Can I prove any of it? Nope. Not a thing. Just my thoughts. Doesn't even matter, anyway. You seem really upset about Sawyer citing a general trend that, as the term implies, while being generally true also by definition does not describe the entire playerbase. There is a reason why people use qualifying statements like "probably" (the one he specifically cited) and "generally" and so forth. Large populations do have attributes that can be summarized, on average, while allowing for the fact that individual variation does exist. Concluding that he looks down on people who enjoy D&D is unlikely given that the guy puts up Instagram's of him BSing with coworkers over a game of 3.5 D&D. In a word: Chillax. No, I'm not really upset about anything. I'm having a discussion about something with somebody. You see, this is why I don't talk to people. Also: Weasel words do not a free pass make.

Oh, a little bit of that isn't a bad thing in a DM and probably isn't a bad quality in a narrative designer, either. I didn't make a value judgment, dudes!

  4. You've never heard of a tank? Seriously?!
  5. Accurate. Remember, wizards don't just have lots of versatility, they've also got all those cool flashy effects going on all over the screen! Fireballs and lightning bolts and walls of force. Even their basic attack is this cool ball of crackling energy that explodes! Fighters just kind of stand their and hit things with the same basic animation over and over. It's not nearly as visually appealing.
  6. Fig is more well known in the video game industry--among industry professionals--than it ever has been in the general population. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason Pillars 2 is on Fig is an attempt to bring more knowledge of it to the general population. Feargus is, after all, part of the corporate advisory panel for Fig.
  7. Love the idea, but I'm afraid that the SIERRA people wouldn't like it Yeah, this about the game where they named their ship the Defiant.
  8. Really dislike the 5 char limit. The 4 char limit was one of the few things I disliked about Tyranny.

  10. No, it was *very* definitely called an expansion. in fact, Obsidian was very upfront about their dislike of modern companies DLC habits during that process.
  11. I loved these games as a kid. Peeps at my studio try to hate on them, I always defend them. haha Hope to see you nerds on the PoE 2 forums, - Sking BG:DA isn't bad at all for the Gauntlet-style game that it is. They should *never* have tried to crib off the success of the Baldur's Gate franchise, though; that left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths.
  12. Wizards always know all their spells now. When you equip a grimoire, you can cast the spells in that grimoire in addition to the ones you already know, but only while you have it equipped, so no learning spells from grimoires anymore. Ah, I see. So I can still choose to never change my grimoire, but doing so provides an actual advantage now. I see.
  13. Skaen? Is that you? Former slave Orlan Cipher here. Always thought the gods were a bunch of ****, Thaos simply confirmed it. But if there's a one of them that makes a good point now and again, it's Skaen.
  14. Whips open up the possibility of disarm attacks. I believe disarming was implemented in Tyranny, wasn't it?
  15. No! No, I shall never own a whip. Not a whip. Whips are for the master! WHIPS! TOMORROW! TOMORROW THE MASTER CHOKES ON HIS OWN WHIP!
  16. "Spells can no longer be scribed. Whatever spells are in a grimoire are the spells that it has." Wait...a wizard can only cast spells that are in their grimoire, no matter if they know them. So does this mean that I have to wait to find a bloody grimoire with it before I can cast a spell? Does this *mandate* switching grimoires out? I went through all of PoE without ever switching grimoire, because that's some annoying micromanagement that I chose to ignore.
  17. I also suspect that the badge deal is confusing people. No joke; couldn't have confused people more effectively if I set out to design a way to do it.
  18. I don't get the science-fiction vibe problem. This setting is *full* of magitek; that's basically what animancy *is*. That's what's up with the animats and all of the undead, even, except for revenets; it's the same process.
  19. I'll be donating to this come March. No questions. Only reason I haven't? I'm on SSI; I literally do not have any money until March 1st. At that point I will be able to spare, like...ten bucks. Not much, but it's what I can do. You have no idea how much I had to sacrifice to pull off the thirty bucks to pledge to the games campaign.
  20. Yes but eventually this trend started to give way. PoE is probably a little bit different. I wouldn't expect nearly as much as we got in the first 2 days. I'd put us maybe right around 4.1-4.2 million on the optimistic side. The final 800k will probably have to come after the campaign. But this is all just guess work. There will always be people willing to chip in another $30-60 a month later when their next paycheck comes. Tax return season anyone? And people like me on SSI who are just waiting until the beginning of the next month to be able to actually contribute!
  21. More than 1 trap at a time! And also those abysmal load times. My god.
  22. 1: BG2 2: PoE (there's a reason I've clocked over 500 hours) 3: KOTOR 2/Grandia II/FF 3/6/ Not quite in this league but *REALLY* good: Vampire: The Masquerade--Bloodlines (with fan patches) Grandia III Chronotrigger Tyranny BG 1
  23. I'm sorry but isn't this a little bit ridiculous? "perceived wrongs"? Trying to kill someone is wrong. You're reading a bunch of entitlement into him being mad about his goddess who he devoted his life to wanting him dead. I'm not saying he doesn't believe he is entitled to a reward from her but I don't see how your explanation for his anger at her works or is even needed. Well, he sure uses a lot of gendered insults. Not "that backstabbing ****" or "treacherous wench", it's all aboard the whore train with him. Frankly, I'm more surprised at the naivety of devising a god-killing weapon, then being surprised that your god wants to eradicate all knowledge pertaining to how such things are made (including, well, you). Yeah i'm not saying he is not a sexist, or that he isn't entitled. Just him being mad about that specific thing seems perfectly reasonable. You don't have to be entitled to be mad someone stabbed you in the back and literally tried to kill you, even if you are a terrible person who probably deserves it. I'd agree with you, except, it's not what I saw in that scene. If the attempt to kill him had been another test, Durance would have gladly accepted it and tried to conquer it. He didn't see a test, he finally saw that Magran was never going to give him what he wanted, no matter how much he begged and tortured himself for her. That's why I don't believe "You tried to kill me" is the reason Durance gets mad and wants vengeance. "You won't **** me, how dare you" fits much better. But it's *not* another test. For a long time he thinks it is, and he's trying *REAL* hard to pass it, but as time goes on and Magran never, ever acknowledges his existence again he begins to doubt. He begins to think that it's *not* another test, so he begins to react as if Magran really, actually betrayed. Which, of course, she *really, actually did*. Magran *DID* betray him and Magran *DID* try to murder him and Magran *DID* only fail at the last one because of the damage done by the Godhammer--which, by the way, also has it's own effects on who Durance is and why he acts the way he does. Is Durance a good guy? No. Durance is an ****. Is Durance perfectly reasonable in why he's pissed at Magran? Yes. Yes, he is.
  24. After all she's a godess, not a woman. She promised nothing. Isn't that a normal thing for religious freaks? Sacrificing yourself for your god? Yeah, maybe. But the problem is...she didn't ****ing *TELL ANY OF THEM THIS*. Magran had her most devoted followers make the Godhammer bomb, and the whole time she planned for them to die from it's use but never bothered to tell them that. That isn't just betrayal. That's *MURDEROUS* betrayal.
