Update 2.01 is Now Live

And this is why I strongly dislike the general move towards an online-only distribution model. -
First of all, calling people with other playstyles "stupid" is the kind of ignorant egocentricity I would assume you attribute to "min-maxers". So, pot calling kettle black. a) Why would an accomplished killer like DoC have such weak attributes unsuited for killing? b) Why would a construct body be so weak physically? c) Why would DoC be unable to put on some armor? She has no trouble putting on helmets, boots, gauntlets and other items of clothing. d) Why would a killer use farming implements in her criminal career, instead of tools actually designed for the job of manslaying? She doesn't give off the demented Leatherface vibe. A: She burned people's houses with them inside; that's not something that depends on dexterity. Notice her super-high resolve? That's both what drove her to murder, and what allowed her to survive the soul-transfer process. B: Her body is just a body, made of metal and with certain limitations; the dex limitation makes sense when you remember her body is made of ****ing solid goddamn bronze. You also seem to forget that literally *ALL* of her murders were comitted prior to her souls transfer into the golum, when she had a human body, except for the one you help with during the quest. C: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GameplayAndStorySegregation D: Because she's a farmer whose only "murdering" those who destroyed her family, not actually a dedicated serial killer, and her form of murder exclusively involved Molotov ****tails through windows, not any form of combat? For a bonus, I'm also going to inform you that I called the ARGUMENTS stupid, not the gameplay style.

The Grey Sleeper
Katarack21 replied to Theorycrafter's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Interestingly, the big adra pillar in Magran's Fork also works. I'm guessing the first step may have multiple solutions as well. Every machine is able to unlock it. I unlocked it with the machine on the very first map where you become a watcher. It's easiest to access and so I tried it and it worked. Yeah, and it seems that every outdoor (and thus sun-kissed) graveyard works for step 2. Nice idea with those riddles, but I hope next time they're a bit harder and maybe even lore-based? Or with some ciphers to crack? Something like that, the answers would probably show up within a day on the forum anyway for those who wanted them The riddles I at least tried to solve. If it was a cipher there's two ways that'd go; either I wouldn't realize it at first if the cipher was disguised in an ordinary sentence, in which case I'd just be super pissed off when I found out this secret hidden key is the only way to get this cursed weapon out of my hand, or if it was clearly a cipher I'd just be immediately pissed off and frustrated and would instantly be searching for the solution online without ever bothering to try. So yeah. **** a cipher. Cryptography is something I find interesting in a "I want to read a book about it, but **** actually doing it" way. -
The having to re-purchase all of your spells is a limitation of how the re-leveling works. I don't see how they would fix it unless they somehow flagged your spell picks and did not allow you to pick any spells at all during a re-spec level up. They clearly track the spells you know and whatnot in the game. There should be someway to archive how many spells you know, perhaps doing so in the moments before you enter character generation and do the respec, and simply letting you choose that number of spells. That would be in line with the whole idea of a respec in letting you redo your whole spell list. Of course I'm not a game designer or programmer of any sort. For all I know this is literally impossible.

THIS. Why do developers so often feel the need to CRIPPLE player companions, making them weak and un-optimised from a whole variety of angles? The completely silly companion stat distribution has been plaquing PoE from the start. But, it was nothing that couldn't be fixed with a little console fiddling. However, now the devs have hit a few new lows in one fell swoop: 1) A "DPS" companion with NON-REMOVABLE ARMOR that imposes a steep 40% recovery penalty, and with a pathetic 8 DR? It's like the WORST armor ever imaginable: it doesn't give the recovery rate of lighter armors, while at the same time remaining far from the protection of full plate (with only 10% recovery rate difference), and it doesn't offer any of the unique armor abilities (such as Second Chance, Retaliation, Preservation, extra flanking damage, skill boosts etc). Not to mention the purely aesthetic "pleasure" of constantly having to look at DoC's C-3PO body. What, did the designers think it was so "appealing" they didn't want players to "hide" it under armor or clothing? ROFL. 2) "Living machine" has to be among the least useful racial traits to date. Not being able to wear armor of the player's choice would have at least merited a decent racial ability; however, immunity to disease and poison (how often does a DPS char - especially a ranged DPS char as rogues are wont to be - gets hit with one of those?) in exchange of being unable to use food, drinks and drugs? At best, this is a zero-sum trait; at worst, it is a penalty rather than a benefit. If there was also immunity to fatigue, it would have been decent (and far more logical); as it stands now, it is pointless. 3) Weapon focus: Peasant? Are you kidding me? Hatchet, Spear, Quarterstaff, Hunting Bow, Unarmed - truly "excellent" weapon selection for a rogue, not to mention "logical" for a mass murderer who's made a career in killing. Using farming implements. 4) And, of course, to round it all up there's the genius stat distribution. 15 Resolve and 10 Dex/13 Might on a DPS character? Sign me up... not. So yeah, all in all the DoC's gotta be the worst companion to date from gameplay perspective. Unfortunately, she's also the only "evil" companion, and her banter is quite enjoyable. I don't know if the devs went for the HK-47 (of KOTOR fame) feel, but it feels like a botched effort. Probably I'm still gonna be taking DoC for a ride (personality-wise she's a welcome diversion from the majority of PoE's milquetoast entourage), but it will require some heavy editing to make her into a reasonably optimised combatant. This is like a giant list of stupid arguments made by min/maxers.

Oddball "coinage"
Katarack21 replied to Oralaina's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
True facts. All the different types of coins you pick up automatically convert to the common currency. The different types in different places are just for flavor an atmosphere. It's a good effect, IMHO--really breaks immersion for me when I'm in a dungeon and looting modern coins, and it avoids the hassle and frustration of going somewhere to convert for cost. -
Perfect Setting for POE 2

Readceras used to be a nation of mostly crap farmers, before Waidwen. Now it's a highly militarised theocracy. -

I haven't fired up 2.01 yet. Are the soulbound weapons counting all their kills, now? -
Perfect Setting for POE 2
Katarack21 replied to Grimo88's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah no, I haven't played any ****ty pirate games lately, so I guess that's what I'm itching for. Although I have faith in Obsidian to do it right so it wouldn't be so ****ty. Of course it wouldn't be. Obsidian isn't Piranha Bytes and Pillars isn't an action game. I'd rather have fun being a pirate, fighting sea monsters, etc. than deal with politics and business building, etc. This is a video game, not Government Economics 101. -
"if there are any "clear the board" type spells that can be used 3-6 times to win most fights, then the skills need to be re-balanced." I disagree. I'd say if there is any spell that you never need more than once a fight, it needs to be re-balanced. Rather than make each spell less effective, less desirable, and less wanted you should make *EVERY* spell the kind of spell you want to use 3-6 times in a fight....but only be able to pick a few of them.

Auto-use? Auto-purchase? Then it's effectively just a semi-permanant resource-draining stat boost. Like a cursed magic item that gives you a +2 to strength but destroys 300 gold a day--in a word, ****ty. If that was in the game, I'd just wonder why they didn't just get rid of it and boost your overall stats instead of having a constant drain on your resources--it would annoy me endlessly.
-
Might isn't magic. Might isn't strength. Might is a measurement of raw soul power, which translates into damage even for fighters as even fighters use their souls to inflict supernatural damage, as is made very, very clear in the guidebook, the wiki, etc. The problem is simply that this is not reflected in the flavor text--this sucks, and if it breaks your suspension of disbelief I'm sorry, but that also sounds like *YOUR* problem. I am quite capable of both understanding this simple concept of what "Might" means, and of continuing to enjoy the story despite the admittedly unfortunate manner in which the flavor text is written. This isn't particularly complicated, and I'm rather sick of hearing morons whining about it all the time.

Perfect Setting for POE 2

I care not a whit for the Vailian Republics. They bore me. I'd rather see something set in the Deadfire Archipelago. -
You seem to be misunderstanding. If what he is saying is true, then they don't SEEM to outright cheat--they ARE outright cheats. He's claiming they literally have more abilities, stat points, etc. than is actually possible to build. If that's true, then it's not a case of "making a challenging enemy". It's a case of breaking the ruleset to generate overpowered enemies as a cheap and lazy way of creating challenge. On the other hand, this isn't exactly unheard of in IE games. BG's enemy wizards and their five contingencies, NWN 2's beserker boss with Deathless Frenzy (which player barbarians don't get), etc.

I don't think we have seen an issue where no soulbound weapons are counting kills. Is it a specific weapon? If not, would you mind sending over your saved game our way so we can investigate? Hi Brandon, the issue has been reported in the technical forum and acknowledge by Aarik D. if memory serves. When St Ydwen's Redeemer kills a Vessel with the Destroys Vessels proc, the kill doesn't count toward the total for unlocking the next level. Our best guess ("our" as in "the community's") is that a kill only counts if the killing blow comes from the weapon directly and not from the spell it proc'd. I think I misunderstood. I thought the problem was that none of the soulbound weapons were counting kills. That issue you reported is known and it currently in the queue for the next patch. Celliot over in Technical Support said... So it has to be something other than just the destroy effect. Is the fix in line for the next patch just for the Redeemer, it is it also something that'll fix Stormcaller, etc.?
