  1. If the Maoists somehow managed to win and overthrow the established order the country would be run by a small cadre of nationalist-Marxists who would mobilise the people in enormous public works projects and generally run the economy into the ground. If a guerilla movement rejects democracy, dialogue, power sharing, etc. it's difficult to get anywhere negotiating with them, cf. FARC.
  2. Yeah, Spielberg and Hanks said they had already done the following the group of soldiers from start to finish thing so now they were going to focus the show on how the war affected the soldiers as human beings. Consequently it's rather depressing and somewhat boring.
  3. Dr. Manhattan wtf.
  4. Undertakers are a strange breed, but at least they have experience and tact in ripping people off. Airliners ?. I mean you are lucky just to get where you are going these days.
  5. Sure we can judge another culture, we do it all the time. He's probably right that stories about how weird the Japs are tend to lead more than those on how well adjusted they are, go figure.
  6. What, like tripping over a branch and accidentally implanting your erect penis in some stranger's vagina ?
  7. Cosmonaut. Russian astronauts are called cosmonauts. Cool, isn't it. Anyway I don't think the event conformed to normal rules of physics.
  8. Nahh, pure entertainment.
  9. We do not want your Butthurt. I'm going to leave that one well alone.
  10. Butthurt much? Begpardon ?
  11. From the article on US weapons sales. a $2.1 billion jet fighter for Morocco and a $2 billion attack helicopter for Taiwan. That must be some attack helicopter.
  12. Everybody that makes weapons sell them and no one can afford to let principle guide them too strongly in their choice of customers, that has always been the nature of the business.
  13. Really?! That's your most coherent response? I liked it.
  14. We should have Druids on the payroll here in Denmark. No, not really.
  15. There are murder simulators. I never heard of any. Must be a relatively minimal target demographic.
  16. What is that, the winter palace where her beloved Communists shot the emperor, his whole family, and their servants.
  17. Obviously there is also some sentimentality going on for back when Russia was more powerful, I bet that kind of thing goes over well with the new generations.
  18. Isn't it the other way around, the govt, Putin, cracking down on any business tychoon it doesn't like. I'd wager the same would happen to his 'friends' if they forgot their place.
  19. This is the kind of thing you would do in a mmorpheger as a freebee to keep the interest going. Trying to squeeze money out of it is just not very appealing, like the DLC salesman in camp, it lessens the whole experience.
  20. Despite things having moved in the wrong direction as regards freedom of the press and of organisation things are better in Russia than they were. There is a definite tendency for exaggeration from the western media. The foundation of political power is now fully democratic. I'm not so sure I believe the claims of that controversial article. It was something about the Russians having advance knowledge of, or even complicity in, previous attacks, was it that one ?. It all sounds pretty fantastical.
  21. Unfortunately being a greedy petty bastard is not illegal, last I checked. anyway do like the Russian soldiers of ww1 and vote with your feet.
  22. Yeah the chiselling phenomenon is getting worse and worse as DLCs become an integrated part of the development cycle. Some times the Vanilla game hardly looks like a finished product. In Napoleon total war you pay 20% more for 10 extra units. I hope negative word of mouth can work against the strong tendency to be too greedy.
  23. It's a little worrying if this is the extent of the knowledge among young Russians about how their own country used to be run.
  24. This is what they call the 'otherness' of Japan, that everything is so different that we couldn't possibly understand with our inadequate western POV. It's a load of nonsense. One of my old teachers told me that the groping problem with the rowdy weekend crowd was so bad that they had to institute women only train cars. It excites the pervs because it's out in the public. The notion of Japanese women just standing there being paralysed by shame is part of the perv fantasy, it does not correspond in any way with reality.
  25. I'll venture a guess : it's because psychologically you still believed that another 'strong man' could save you all. You were so used to having a Pater Familias at the head of the country you couldn't do without one, you needed to be reassured.
