Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition Announced
Bester replied to CoM_Solaufein's topic in Computer and Console
Yes, TOEE story has made some people fall into a coma. You seem to be somewhat of an expert on Troika and I've always wondered something. Here's what I'd like to know or at least get your opinion on. How could the same studio make VtMB (10/10 story-wise) and TOEE (super bad) at almost the same time? -
Well, try that one as a temporary fix. It has a window resolution dialog, so you should be able to select "800x600 Window mode". I so regret having made it on Unity...
-
It's a known Unity bug that I'll try to investigate, in the meantime what happens if you press Alt+Enter? That should fix it.

Pretty disappointed, this launches in December?

>"I'm old by gamer standards, older than some of the developers, and I've playtested my share of games." >"Thanks for your stunning insight." >"are you just ejoying the sumgness of your smartness and breadth of experience, teaching me a valueable life lesson in How To Game?" LOL. > butthurting all over the place > "I love the internet". Cool story! -
Well let's not get too sentimental, there isn't much use for it right now. I mostly like to change avatars and classes only when I'm replaying an IE game for the 5th time or so. I'm not sure PoE will even have that much replayability.

Notes for 0.9b: Important stuff. Less important or unimportant stuff. If you encounter any bugs, pls report them here. I want to be certain this version is 100% stable before moving forward.

Wrote a Savegame Editor. Some screenshots: (placeholder) Download link. It's an Open Source project, so feel free to contribute. The sources are distributed under CC BY-SA license. The program is written on Unity in C# and uses the new GUI from the 4.6 open beta. Before someone says it was a horrible idea to write anything but a game on Unity, I can assure you I already found out the hard way.

And you... Look. I'm sort of a war nerd and I've closely observed a fair share of conflicts. One of the first thing you notice as a war nerd is this. Good soldiers never panic, even when losing. Civilians panic ALL THE TIME, even if winning. Same thing I see with you. You're panicking for absolutely no reason. Just observe this: it took Obz a year to build the whole thing. It's a LOT of work, it's a monumental effort. And now they have a few minor bugs and half a year to fix them. Each of those bugs, like items disappearing from inventory, can most likely get fixed by a single line of code. They killed an elephant in a year, you don't think they can kill a microbe in half a year? They might have some "challenges" like you say, but those are purely conceptual. Once they decide which way they're going, it will be coded really fast. They have a complete framework now, they can get anything to work in a matter of minutes, whichever way they decide to go regarding any game mechanics. For example, let's say they decided to award XP for combat. Simple: take the quest awarding method and divide awarded XP by ten, then add a simple xp awarding method at the death of a hostile creature, calculate awarded XP based on its various stats. Bam, done. A day to change the whole XP mechanics, to basically change the whole game, then another day to tweak it a little and polish it. Done. -

You couldn't be more wrong. Just the other day I had to write an inventory system for an MMO and I did it all in one day. Everything from network code to dragging the inventory window. There are code snippets that you can just google up and libs for everything now. What Blizz accomplished with a fair sized team and years of development can now be achieved with a small team of 3-4 dudes in less than half a year. Of course it doesn't apply to AI, cause that you have to write from scratch. Although Obz having experience with it, could use the pseudo code from their other games, improve and adjust it a little for the new system and then just put it into c# code. I don't know what they're complaining about. Although Josh does the complaining, not the programmers, so it's pretty much irrelevant. -
Reason why Diablo 3 pissed me off. The REAL reason.
Bester replied to ktchong's topic in Computer and Console
What OP is saying is that the old Blizz guys were hardcore and grimdark, and the new diablo is a cartoony **** for kids. He feels it instinctively and sees one of the manifestation of it through class names. I imagine he's seeing other manifestations of it as well, but just can't quite put his finger on it. -

There are different types of licenses, that basically allow all types of things. -

>pathfinding >core mechanics >old, wise dude whose advices we should all heed DOES NOT COMPUTE. My god. Do you even realize that they just took A* Pathfinding and didn't write a single line of code for that? Do you even realize that a school kid could understand that algorithm, or that there's nothing "core" about it, you can just improve it in 5 minutes if you want to? The bugs they had are so minor, it's likely they've already fixed them all by now. The only bugs that I'd worry about if I was them are the GUI bugs. I pity Obz cause they're stuck with the old Unity OnGUI ****, when the new uGUI beta just got released. What a waste. They've written thousands of lines of buggy code and all of that could be made in a few simple clicks a few months from now when the 4.6 gui becomes stable. -
I'm considering buying the Oculus dev kit. Does anyone own one, is there any stuff you can already play with it?

I wonder if Bio (or who? i can't be arsed to check) also lost all assets for IWD. This could be interesting if the assets are still there. Could rerender areas, make them more beautiful. Except I don't believe for a second that Beamdog is interested in actual honest work. From the amount of work they've done on the BG series in over 2 years now (isn't it?), it looks like they have 1 programmer and he works 1 hour/month. And he hates doing anything. And Beamdog hates BG original interface, fonts, etc. Or they just can't bring themselves to care. -
>revolutionary combat system Another person who doesn't understand the meaning of the word. Revolution is a drastic and irreversible change of social formation. A combat system being revolutionary would mean that no gamedev would even think about implementing the old system since the appearance of this one. Which is just a wet dream of yours, and has nothing to do with reality. This reminds me of the late 00's misuse of the word "epic". Anyway, this combat system is neither epic, nor revolutionary. Unnoticeable is the word you're looking for.

(DPS) vs (Accuracy - Deflection). Here's the maths. Enjoy.
Bester replied to Matt516's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Is MIG responsible for how much a character gets healing from a healing spell or the reverse? Also, could you perhaps make an excel file where one can input their stats and see the resulting DPS?- 99 replies

Eh, it's history back and forth. At various points in time the Irish were only too happy to come over to England to act as enforcers to prevent rebellion. They were one of the threats Charles I used in an attempt to prevent any threats against the crown from the people and aristocracy, so it's not exactly a surprise Cromwell put the boot firmly in. Then again, if you judge by the standards of warfare of the time period and what was happening in the rest of Europe, Cromwell was fairly decent in his behaviour and the rules of warfare he used. But there's a fair bit of myth and popular revisionism that's taken hold over the centuries about it all. Sure, atrocities were commonplace. But Americans have acknowledged that they did horrible things to African slaves, and yet the Brits who did so much more to many more nations have acknowledged absolutely nothing.
