  1. Being close to half blind I can ROLL with only one option here I'm playing FNV atm and man those mines and spring traps are pissing me off. My current char has 8 PE but very low traps skill, and yet the only problem so far are not his failed attempts to disarm a trap, but ME, the player, failing to notice the damn thing before it clicks, or sprang or starts beeping and subsequently blows his face off (I have a very low EN because INT above all). That's not funny, especially when I got immersed to much and forget to make a quicksave... Not to mention that I'm forced to use wiki while snooping around, if only to find more than most obviously hidden (containers, boxes) and visible loot. Because the bloody sniper/scavenger I'm roleplaying, has his wonderful eyes focused solely on V.A.T.S. and radar :/
  2. <Edit> Argh, Lephys pointed it out first. Why do I have to polish those damn posts for so long :/ You've got me lost here - isn't a co-op just one of the many types of multiplayer? I'm asking because the only time I enjoyed multi in IE games was that one LAN co-op with a friend in Icewind Dale (the first). Probably because ID is the most hack-n-slashy of them all. ...also my friend never liked reading that much, and so all non-combat decisions were mine to make :> But to make it clear where do I stand in this discussion - I'm with Jim Sterling. And because he's smarter than me, (and a native speaker) I'll allow myself to link an old episodes where he tackles the success of [NSFW] Skyrim* and the second one, where he explains the NEED of the single player experience in more detail. For those not interested (or with strong aversion to Jim) short summary: I need my single player games even more than 90% of multiplayer games, as that's my time spent alone and FOR ME EXCLUSIVELY, without anyone ******* it up (even if unintentionally). * funny thing is I do not like Bethesda's rpgs and yet, because of that episode of Jimquisition, I learned to respect them for what they did for a single player (not taking into account TES Online). Suck it industry
  3. I like numbers. Can't help it because that's how the oryginal Fallout raised me. {and now to derail a topic} But because of it's influence I can think about one instance where I'd like the numbers to be hidden from me (and possibly messed up a little): all those morality, reputation and loyalty counters, which are in far to many games way to evident (or apparent if you wish) for me. ...I'm looking at you DA:O, but also F:NV karma popups Then again I never really though about it and therefore can't say how much "reward driven" were my in game decisions all this time. Hmm... it would be quite interesting to play a game, where the only knowable gain are money and loot, and to some extent fame, ranks, orders of merit etc I'm sure it's too late for PE for that, but who knows? The premise made me wonder.
  4. Three games from that list that I care about (PE, W3, HM) are not even in the first 10 atm... But then again, does it mean anything to me? ...well, no
  5. Being one of them I can't help but wonder if you really did wade through all those 24 pages Don't get me wrong - I'm thankful, because I for one didn't "crapped". In fact I made my remark in quite defensive and cautious way, not wanting to discourage anyone involved in creating those alpha-stage spells effect. Must I remind you that Baldur's Gate 2 happened 12 years ago, in an age of rapid development when 2 year old computer was considered "old"? Them, effect spells, looking better than that is no excuse for me. And just to evade being called anything "CoD" related (by anyone, not necessarily you) I'll repeat - I know it's not even beta, and thus I'm almost certain the final product will be far more eye catching - I wouldn't have upgraded my reward tier otherwise (especially given the IRL circumstances).
  6. Ok, that may be plain stupid but I can't stop myself Above post from JFSOCC and the time frame provided by PrimeJunta made me wonder how different the gun's history would be in a world with abundance of mithril-esque ore and at least one trope-fitting race of ingenious engineers First of all it's a material superior to those used by "our" gunsmiths - i.e. it's lighter and have far greater stress resistance. Secondly It can be easily enchanted, thus providing magically evoked properties like: pseudo- sniping, noctovision and laser sight, magical ammo (duh!), bullet time (yeah probably overkill), or hell even making a bullet itself magically levitate and spin inside a gun! ...at least until they discover that every stupid orc/goblin/whatever can get a similar effect by simply grooving insides of a barrel Har, har! Good riddance you snotty elves! edited typho
  7. I must concur - since I first gave a second thought to Star Wars and Middlearth universes all those years ago, a setting locked on a specific era, unable to change and develop throughout all those millennia was a problem for my (seemingly) limited imagination. It made me wonder even more in cases of technologically inclined dwarves / gnomes / insert_your_favourite_trope_here happily existing in those seemingly stagnant worlds, doing effectively nothing to justify narrators' claims about their ingenuity. I feel that not many pulled off such polarized premise/setting successfully... or at least sufficiently. Hmm... I may be an Arcanum fanboy you know? BTW while I agree that it's quite a challenge to explain existence of firearms in primarily bronze age setting, I'd like to support JFSOCC point that It's not an effort doomed from the start when we are discussing a fantasy. I strongly believe it's merely hard to pull of with class Plus it's also even more than valid in terms of "historical accuracy".* I'm thinking here about the clash of Mesoamerican and European culture and arrival of western explorers/colonists in Australia (even more extreme example I might add). * Yeah, the very same I don't want to see as an ultimate point of reference to the fantasy setting.... don't call me hypocrite
  8. But of course they do! You don't think I was hoping for complete out of touch approach? Because that would mean I'm ok with (for the sake of example) NPCs suddenly turning to Mandarin Chinese because "that's how they roll here" I merely ask for -as PrimeJunta said- "not to hung up to" urgent need of similarity to much* Because -again just like he said- both those game worlds I used as examples are coherent within their boundaries and because of that their inconsistency with newtonian laws or darwinian survival of the fittest are that much easier to accept. Could be that I didn't explained it clearly enough - if such was the case, then I'm sorry And to address the lack of printing press: I have an issue (but merely an issue, not a full fledged problem) with imagining renaissance without it, because of it's impact on the education progress and thus development of science and technology. But -again- by all means that doesn't need to be the same setting Josh is imagining <link> * on a side note: like some publisher did to Andrzej Sapkowski ("The Witcher" just in case), when changing some words in "The Road with No Return" novella, to make them more suitable for medieval-like setting, without even consulting it with him
  9. Heh, I sense Sapkowski's influence here But I concur - the creator should be bound only by his/hers imagination, and not by some similarities expectations of it's audience. Maybe in terms of PoE, which was advertised heavy as something inspired by IE games (and thus expectations inducing) this may sound stupid or out of place. But then again, how can we predict the scale of analogy they had in their minds, while they were describing it as "colonial or renaissance era, minus the printing press"? For all I know, people behind PoE lore are Americans and can feel more like Adhin than PrimeJunta about that whole colonialism concept. But lets head back to the point - why would they have to be bound by our perceiving, if the setting in question is not even alternate reality, but a pure fantasy original IP? They don't even need to give us substitute for printing press (without which I have a hard time imagining our renaissance developing further) if they desire so. Funny enough, I'm one of those who likes backstories and well thought reasons for things to happen, because it makes things more believable and greatly improves my suspension of disbelief -but again- does it mean that only analogies to our established knowledge could achieve that? I'm no writer, not even an educated man so I may be terribly wrong, but I strongly believe that it's not the case if we are discussing foundations for a fantasy setting. Just think how illogical and different are two of my beloved game worlds - Fallout and Arcanum. First with it's vacuum tubes and huge magnetic tape reels sentient computers, and second with its steam powered airplanes manned by Ogres (the least logical choice in terms of physics) among many other examples. Both didn't provide me with more beyond "it's different" explanation, but then I didn't needed it to be historically accurate or AC Clark hard sci-fi because that was not the premise. And basically that's why I find it much easier to just forget about any reality driven rules and go with "they do not apply" as long, as the writer himself doesn't try to hard to impose different mindset upon me. Oh, and given above Fallout and Arcanum examples I'm glad that devs don't have to stick to the encyclopedically correct definitions and cultural orientation we're maimed by.
  10. Knowing that my 6yo PC had enough power to run Witcher 2, I find it hard to believe it wouldn't be good enough for 2d heavy PoE. ...IF it had not broken down before xmas that is
  11. All of the things you mentioned never had any lasting impact over my enjoyment of IWD. I can't say why - maybe because I didn't had any expectations for IWD (BG didn't made me a fan of a genre), maybe because I learned about it existence from prehistoric printed magazine and knew from the very beginning what not to expect, maybe because I'm not a die-hard fan of only one crpgs design* and can be satisfied as long as the game in question knows it's limitations and doesn't try to be something more. Maybe something completely else, dunno. All I know is - it didn't affected me. Sure, I immediately noticed all those differences between GB and IWD (like that npc interaction), but I don't feel that it has anything to do with just how much IE suits dungeon crawling genre. I honestly recall only two issues I had with IWD - speed spell/boots/potions and sleeping abuse I felt forced into. But they were back there in the first IE installment, which proves IMO that no matter if it's fully fleshed rpg or just a dungeon crawler, some things will stay the same: a nuisance, without any meaningful impact over the overall satisfaction. So all I can do here, is acknowledge your opinion and drop it here Oh - and there were sidequests in IWD. Sure, nowhere near BG numbers, but still they were there. edit: internet says there are +/- 17 sq *or am I? Fallout 1 and 2 are to this day my "how it should be done"
  12. You're right - my game wouldn't be worsened in any way by that, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and all those folks you represent. Peace BTW: anyone enjoyed battlefields in Beyond Divinity? I hoped someone will at least try to defend them, the last time I mentioned 'em
  13. In your opinion I would say, which of course isn't any more, or any less valid than mine. And let me tell you, that I have very much enjoyed Icewind Dale (the first) to extent of replaying it 3(?) times and then coplaying it twice (with a friend, via lan on holidays). Sure, not in a row, but I suppose it's not the point here. So if that mega-dungeon would turn out to be a game inside a game (imagining IWD like megadungeon inside BG2 here) I'd be more than happy.
  14. I really dislike the abuse of "immersion" word. Seriously, I'm doing my best not to be hostile here, but where and what would be Arcanum (one of my top beloved crpgs) without the conflict between technology and magic? Sure, main antagonist's goals could be presented just as well without that techno-flavor, but again - Arcanum that we know and love (or hate), is all about this very conflict. I bet O knows that very well and won't loose the chance of mentioning and debating possible impact the gun will sooner or later have over PoE world. So as you (probably) already guessed I'm fine with flintlock guns. ...at least as long as they won't end up nerfed or -don't know how to explain it in other words- jrpg'ised. And yes, I KNOW that those type of firearms where neither the most powerful, accurate or reliable, but just as Plutone00 said - used wisely, they could make all the difference. Especially against someone who diminishes it's significance. dited typo
  15. I need some back-story flavor, but not necessarily another Watcher's Keep epic scale, world threatening drama (which I liked, don't get me wrong). Durlag's Tower (or half-ogre island from Arcanum) background would suffice here. Without it, I'm afraid I'll end up bored just like I did with Battlefields in Beyond DIvinity. I'm not concerned about anything else (like mechanics, loot amount/type or design) because They already gave us enough info to keep me calm.
  16. <drooling> Your attachement to the details and understanding of the IE feel™ is inspiring and makes this little grouch even less grumpy. Man, what a splendid day I have today - so many good news Thanks!
  17. Why thank you. I was trying Yup, I agree and that's pretty much why I wrote earlier that I cannot imagine "translating" PC controls-combo of mouse and keyboard to console's gamepad (though it has that touch screen isn't it?). Shame really, because the only winner here are those who milk consumers "forced" to pick 2 or even 3 different systems for the sake of being able to play what they find worthwhile and wider their gaming experience. Will never agree with laws that say emulation is a crime. Like Ross Scott recently said: "there are no good reasons, only legal ones"
  18. Pretty sure one can't assume that huge spiders would equals smalls only bigger, stronger, faster. There's a reason insects stopped being huge, and given most of those fantasy worlds are more or less similar to nowadays Earth, their biology would have to obey same rules (not enough oxygen for expanded metabolism). And lets not forget physics - can't imagine something horse sized would climb over ceiling using same principles as the "ordinary" spiders do... It's weight would be to much for friction to keep em up there. At least for smooth ceilings without additional solid gripping points. Those are things people far smarter than me pointed out, i.e. scientist Sure, one can explain all those issues with magic, but I really hate when this happens because it's just lazy. On the more proper note: after the longest day since... well since some unspecific date in not so distant past, I've managed to secure my long awaited tier upgrade. Woohoo for Obsidian for keeping their word (support gave me word on that in march) with style <no sarcasm intended> And W2 beta arrived - it will be an awesome day
  19. Last console I had was NES (and not even oryginal one, search for Pegasus if intrigued) and after that there were times when I felt bad for missing some console exclusives. Despite it I remained pure bred computer gamer (because before PC I had Amiga) for all those years. And yet, despite my background, guess who's in my avatar? Yup, a follower (or enemy, your pick) from a console game that my younger brother asked me to play for him, in some kind genius-level-hunch that I could like it (despite the fact I never played even a single game on his PSX before). So, what I want to say is, that I wouldn't mind seeing PE on any console if only for the sake of people who choose their couch over pc gaming years ago, but deep inside still have that nostalgia about IE games. And for those who were never able to try out this kind of games, because they were/are exclusives for PC. Call it empathy Still with my limited imagination I can't (just like others) see how would they "translate" managing party of 6 in PE without making it tedious for a gamepad users. Not to mention other mouse and keyboard acrobatics. On the other hand I can -given some exercise- imagine a hypothetical company interested in handling the porting of PE (and cashing in). Especially if what some of you said about technical ease of doing so is true (dunno). And about textwalls? I suppose there is a niche for that in console's world, outside of visual novels...? Whatever, stranger things happened since I killed Sarevok for the first time, so who knows. Who knows indeed.
  20. Hope that was a suggestion and not a "Jeopardy!" what is? style question. Because if so CLICK jk But I do feel sorry for those who never played it, and thus didn't had an opportunity to either love it or hate it
  21. How the hell I didn't mentioned that? Sooo... I have to change my oryginal statement to "this and that unreleased Troika's postapo". And in case of Arcanum, not just a "spiritual successor" (yeah yeah, Activision I know) but a fully fleshed out prequel, with strong ties to the oryginal. Because honestly, how can you make a sequel after You introduced and closed the story of Kerghan. I for instance would be satisfied only by being allowed to explore the world back in the day, when he walked the surface of Aranum. Before the fall of Vendigroth. And obviously must is: meeting and doing stuff for/with him as well as other big names from the time of legends But once again - only if this would happen later, much later in 2014 (even as far as autumn), when a blue collar such as myself would secure some spare change Almost everything else was already covered by other KS projects. ...spare change Christ... I just realized that given the possibility I would go even for 250$ in such case, and that is madness (in my part of universe)
  22. I've send the same question to the support in regards of the error that occurs when I want to finalize my upgrade. I thought about confirming my current tier and then upgrading it later, but given to what happened to the OP I'll wait for their response.
  23. I won't be able to support this one, not unless a miracle happens Well maybe I would rob a bank or something if it would turn out to be a resurrection of that unreleased postapo RPG from Troika. Seriously though, I don't know nor do I care who owns the rights as this is merely a jest on my end, but given the xmas aftermatch I hope they'll wait some time with this new KS. Whatever it is.
  24. After reading through all those quotes I had to delete my vote for no, but not because I want to change it. I can't. Sure, I buy Josh explanation/motivation and agree with many people that pointed out that the scope of BG1 wilderness areas was part of its charm. I also have to admit that having those additional 3 followers and thus covering all the classes in this regard is more than ok with me. Said that I still can't vote for yes, because just as FrostPaw said: plans don't always work out and sometimes **** happens you simply cannot plan for. I won't be able to back you up with additional funds for more or less 6 months. Even now I'm trying to upgrade my tier, but that's as far as I'll go simply because it's already irresponsible and unreasonable for a man who quit his job and whose PC just burned. Add some wild xmas spendings to the mix and voila. So to make it short: I would go YES for the idea, but at the same time would have to go NO for giving you more money. At least for a while.
  25. Pretty much that's why I was trying to upgrade my tier for last 3 hours (and failed, but will try again after I'll get some sleep). Just wanted something really "special" and lasting (physical goods) that I could be proud of in many years to come. Well ok, and to show of, but just a little - mostly because not many of my friends would care :D ...aaand because most of my family won't ever understand the sheer level of awesomeness ("you paid HOW MUCH for that stupid box?!")
