  1. Huh? I was referring to the dad who wanted to send his kid with autism to video game camp. It seems like he didn't have the money to spare to do it by himself, and was relying on quick funds from a kickstarter to send him there. My main concern was how it was set up, most of the funds received could have been put towards physical goods w/shipping costs and kickstarter fees vs. the actual camp, and the dangers of this possibly happening again in the future if they take Susan Wilson's template as an example of how to do tiers. Right. You want to add additional constraints, rather than letting the consumer decide. How is it adding additional constraints, suggesting how they can do them better with some sense of fiscal responsibility with a lot less floating expenses? I'm sure that goal doesn't put in mind the cost of the physical items, especially at such low tiers. Plus, I'm not forcing anyone to do anything. How is it a constraint? Ultimately yes, the customer will always decide regardless of how any kickstarter is set up, regardless of any suggestions the person putting together the kickstarter takes from anyone.

  3. A few years back I was in Wasaga Beach, a new bar was opening by the beach that my cousin told me was for older people, so that way they had a place were they could feel a bit more comfortable since there are a lot of younger people in all the bars there. I said something like "Oh, what like 40? I hardly see many middle aged people around here. I could see someone wanting to bring them in." He said "No, 25." I felt older that day. Honestly? That happens here in Iowa. Mainly because the area I'm in is strictly college town, so anyone over 22 is usually in a position where they're either teachers, or government. Between 22 and about 38 there's a tiny population. It's part of the reason I can't wait to get the heck out of here. Yeah. I never lived there, but my sister did, and my cousin lived in near-by Collingwood. When I was single (and at the tail end before I had my kids) I used to go there all the time. At least twice a month during beach season, and once a month during the off-season. Wasaga used to have just primarily a seasonal population. However over the last bunch of years, the year-round population started to grow in Wasaga as Collingwood started to expand. Then Wasaga started to expand as well to handle to new year-round population. I had that conversation 6 years ago (I think.) Since that time, my cousin and his wife moved to the other side of the province. My sister got promoted and moved back to our hometown. I have no idea what that area is like now. There's a strange thing about hometowns. You are usually happier than heck to get out of them, and when you do, you're usually fine with it. But when you do go back, you usually appreciate it that much more. The biking just wasn't the same in Kitchener as it was in the Georgian Triangle. I find we don't really have too many dedicated college towns here in southern Ontario like there are in the States. Usually, it is just areas.
  4. Awesome! I want my "Stronghold" to be a Winnebago my character cruises around The Bloom and parks outside of areas of interest. I'd bet Jack Rebney would sell me my Bloom Winnebago. (google/youtube him. NSFW)
  5. He ended up cancelling the kickstarter for his kid to go to camp. It looks like the reason for the short period for it was the spots were filling up quickly, and it appears as though they needed the money. Again, this seems like it would have been a prime example as to why all of those low end physical tiers can be a bad thing. It was one thing with the Wilson's and they could afford it. This one seems like they are having a much harder time getting by. Brian, and others have explained that roughly 1/3 of what they receive actually goes towards Kickstarter fees, and the cost of the Physical items and shipping. This project, and others in the future if they run them like this could have easily see that percentage be over 1/2, in not even worse. I could almost see that dad being in way over his head if it ended up being successful, and people were donating to those physical tiers. At least as it stood before he cancelled it, no one had. We'll see how the next one goes...

  7. Available from Amazon for under $9. The trend that I was referring to is: If this is basically a fundraiser; why is there all of these low tiers with just the physical goods (which results in less profit - close to just the base cost of the game?) I'm imagining a scenario where they only sell these low physical tiers and only make the goal. A small portion of it would be able to go to the camp. Therefore the parent would have had to go through the kickstarter with all of that money exchanging hands, create and ship a bunch of swag to people, and still have to pay a bunch of money out of pocket for the school because they couldn't see that one happening. That is the problem I can see happening. Meanwhile little things that they can do digitally add no cost, and help add up. I actually don't have a problem with them wanting to do a Kickstarter. I just have a problem with a stupid kickstarter as a fundraiser where a lot of the funds go towards things other than the project. It makes it seem like they don't really need the money. The bigger Kickstarters are actually a good model to use. Start off with a bunch of digital only tiers. Add some physical ones as well higher up.
  8. Here is one that I just noticed, and it only has 7 days to go: 14 year old wants to make 1st game - a First Person Shooter! And he has autism. This one is to go to game design camp at ASU. Here though, they teach Unreal. The game will be called "Insomniac: The Madness Within" ------------------ It looks like these will be good to go on Kickstarter. My problem with this one, is all of the low level tiers are physical tiers. It just seems a bit disingenuous to me, when after the costs of the goods, you are coming out to roughly the same amount as the cost of the base game. This one doesn't seem as bad as Susan Wilson's when it comes to Pledge-COM<Cost of base pledge for just the game. It actually seems like they will make a little bit off of those things. Plus for $250 you get your name in the credits, and for $400, you get to name a character. Goodness people, if this is the trend of these, I hope they all fail, regardless of the situation of anyone involved. Oh, for a $15 pledge, I got my name in the credits for Delver's Drop. For a $25 pledge, I could vote on the extra characters, plus extra digital goodies. Just sayin' if you want to put your kids in some video game camp. EDIT - I'm not even saying that if I donated to one of these things that I want my name in the credits for the base cost of the game. I am saying that I don't your stupid swag, and for a kid making a game, if I want to throw my kids name in it, it should only cost a little bit for some non-essential NPC, because THAT does not cost you anything. (That goes out to all kids, not any one in specific.)
  9. Like the Leafs in a shootout, so are the Mbokani's in Anderlect's lives.
  10. I just picked it up. I'm trying it out tonight. Pick it up from their website if you do: For the same $15 as Steam, you get a Steam code AND a DRM-free copy from Humble Bundle.
  11. That's the beauty of our machines. Much more than 5 ft away, and you aren't hearing squat unless someone is yelling. Especially when the guillotine is running, Even then, (I can't attest to the two that are living together when they're alone - again 5 ft.) I would probably put what would be considered the "worst stuff", quasi-mainstream level typical stand up comedian. Just, in all honesty either not quite as funny, or has the delivery as a seasoned one. Plus, as are training goes, if you feel it is going to far, you go "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Stop right there!" Of course, that in itself has been used more as a punchline, then as an actual restraint. The worst case I've heard from another department was someone showing someone else something on their phone. A passerby seen it, was offended, and those two got immediate probation's that lasted 15 or 18 months each. That was one of the times we all went through the SH training. But yes, I agree you can't just go all out, and be mindful of others that may be near by. And we don't go all out. To an outside observer, we are talking, and laughing at times. Of course, we are all (sort of mature) intelligent adults, and know better. It also helps that many of have hung out together outside of work. We're usually at a PG to AA-14 rating. We might go AA-17. We rarely if ever go R. Never reach X. If you're not sure about someone, especially if they're new, play it G-PG safe. Let them stretch their boundary. Nothing comes close to what I imagine goes on at a lot of fast food joints with some (not as mature) yet to get much of their wisdom so far younger people. To reiterate, I've known several teenagers/really young adults who were consummate professionals on the job. I was usually one of them at the time. They should mandate that all radios in work settings with young workers much play the news. Then if they want to crack jokes, they can tell them based on what they hear ton there.
  12. Manti Te'o has yet to be drafted. Scouting reports indicate that he has a tendency of going after receivers that aren't really there.
  13. That sucks. Every few years or so, all the departments at work gets the sexual harassment speech. My department is a bit of a tight knit group. We have low turnover, and have been together for years, so we pretty much know each other well enough that we know what everyone is comfortable with. The assembly lines can be a different story. The story about the ex-maintenance guy is nuts. It's once in a blue moon when I hear stuff get that crazy. Part of the reason though we get those speeches is kind of for this same reason. Someone leaves on a bad note, and/or starts complaining, people that had nothing to do with the original complaints can start getting targeted if they feel it is an atmospheric condition of the workplace. That's why most of my jokes at work are just making fun of something I might have heard on the radio. Ah CBC: You rarely disappoint me. Good luck, eh. Hopefully you get through this just fine.
  14. The results of the test were: An unexpected romance scene with Zevran.
  15. The second last time I had long hair, I walked from my job just inside Waterloo at the Clarica head office, all the way to where I was living way down at the other end of Kitchener in Doon. It was a 14K walk. I loved it. That is until we had a really windy day. 2 hours of my hair getting in my eyes. That weekend, I didn't have long hair anymore for the next decade.
  16. Installing Dungeon Siege 3. I bought the disc a while back to save on the download limit. Currently downloading a 3.2GB patch. That Monaco game looks like a pretty interesting Pacman game with guns. If you pick it up on their website, you get it in DRM free goodness from a humble bundle, as well as a steam key.
  17. I've finally decided to install Dungeon Siege 3. I've played it for a wee bit at a friends on the XBox before. I think after this I'm done with Steam until they get their crap straight and fix their offline mode. I shouldn't have to try fix after fix on the net just to play my games. Once a month was bad enough, now I'm not even getting 2 weeks in, and I'm being careful about exiting it.
  18. After X-Men vs Street Fighter, my love for fighting games died after that. I just figured it wasn't going to get any better than that. Is there a better final enemy than Apocalypse? Even Marvel vs Capcom 3 (another joke release): Same game as X-Men v SF, different package. Galactus did look great though.
  19. I'm much more put out by pre-orders or day one downloadable content that has some actual content to it - extra companions, extra storylines, extra areas to explore. I find those to be more difficult to take than "miss out on this special item (that doesn't really add anything different to the game)" or "miss out on this optional additional element (that again doesn't alter the game or gameplay)". I suppose its because items and fighting styles above what is normally in the game to me is an additive element. I miss something I see as optional. Missing NPCs or areas seems to me a subtractive element, I'm missing content and thus my game experience is altered. I certainly didn't find JADE EMPIRE, for example, different playing it on the PC and having a Rhino Demon transformation and viper fighting styles vs on the X-Box where I had neither of those but access to the Tien's Justice weapon. Ultimately the game was the same the only thing changed was some cosmetic differences to how I dispatched enemies. To me, in this case, they have made a bunch of moves, and have taken some out that is only accessible if you pre-order. My guess is they are probably neater than your average moves. Considering this is an action game with lots of fighting (it appears)... This to me is clearly a case of: Then again, didn't Capcom invent on-disc DLC? It's too bad. Besides Dragon's Dogma, this is the only game that they're releasing that has piqued my interest in any way in years. As far as Jade Empire goes, there was a significant difference between the release dates of the XBox version, and the PC version. I remember because i kept holding out for the PC version, it just wasn't coming so I bought the XBox version thinking it was never coming. Then of course some time later I heard about the PC version finally coming out. 2 years is a significant amount of time for me to accept that what was added to the PC version didn't get ripped off from me in the XBox version. How did Jade Empire play for the PC? My wanting it then for the PC was based on how much more I enjoyed the PC version of KOTOR to the XBox version, and I bought the XBox for the sole purpose of playing KOTOR. When i finally did get JE for the XBox, I was glad because I felt the RT action suited itself better with a controller, vs the K/M of CTBw/P of KOTOR. Did JE have controller support? Fable 1 for PC just doesn't play right with me with the K/M. I've even had a hard time getting a setup with Xpadder that I'm happy with.
  20. Life and Death was good fun. Though I always struggled with doing the cut precisely enough to make the Surgeon General guy not berate me for making a crappy incision. I don't think I ever did anything successful in it if I remember correctly. That quickie I had, I think was an appendectomy. I must have popped the thing or something. Impressed my buddy right beside me when it happened. Probably would have made Jack Kevorkian impressed too. We tried for the next while to try to come close to matching it, but we couldn't. Then we went on to 221B Baker Street.
  21. I think for the next game, Capcom will also disable the Y button, unless you pre-order. The game after that, the up key/on the left analog stick. You want to move up? You gotta pre-order.
  22. http://store.steampowered.com/app/228300/ Apparently if you don't pre-order Remember Me, you lose out on some fighting moves. WTF Capcom!?!?!?
  23. ^^^^^^ Yeah, that one didn't work. I'll see if there is something else I can do.

  25. It's crazy that it's his second biting offense. I think it's safe to say that it's his go-to move now. At least kick him in the balls or something. Something that's at least more of a human thing to do.
