Just played a little bit of Stanley Parable. Not sure how good it exactly is. I like it, but some of the choices and dialogue seemed a bit too trivial for the make-up, if you know what I mean. Also, I'm playing Arcanum and Arx Fatalis. And I should finally start reviewing Beyond.

I'm mildly opposed to multi-classing. I've never cared for it myself. It just seems odd to have a fighter-wizard or a rogue-cleric. I don' know, it's my roleplaying-sense that tells me that some things do not belong together. Also I think a player should be able to be consequent enough to make lasting choices. Of course wizards run out of spells, of course sometimes a fireball right out of a warrior's gaunlet would be comfortable. But that's not what a game should be like all the time. I'm a warrior, so I don't have a fireball at my disposal. I can deal with this. Because I've got plate armour and a greatsword!

_____ I don't care if children are in the game or not. But IF they are in the game I want to be able to kill them. Not because I particularly enjoy killing children, but because I think playing evil shouldn't be limited in a game. Also it's pretty hypocritical to be able to kill hundreds of people, burn them to ashes, usurp their soul, rob them an leave them naked in a forest but not to be able to kill a child. It's a game for god's sake.

Legendary weapons
SophosTheWise replied to hollowcrown's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm already glad if the rarer weapons have a story behind themselves. I don't really care for special stats or whatever. The most interesting aspect behind legendary things is in the name itself: legendary. It's not about the stats. It's about the tales. The legends. -

Man, that's sad. So Josh will not see our awesome birthday thread? Damnit! Also: thanks to Adam for answering questions! Greatly appreciated. I hope wee see you folks more often here Edit: Another question for Adam. I know that PE is set somewhere between the 15th and 17th century technologically (and regarding clothing) speaking. But it has been established, that printing press wasn't invented in PE. Is there a specific reason? Because it strikes me as kind of odd that in a world where you have a lot of guns (you said they were common) and magic, the printing press doesn't exist?- 261 replies

From the Codex birthday thread: All the best, Josh. Make PE awesome! Also, here's a Swiss beer: It's not that good, but hey, it's got a castle on it, so that's pretty dope. It translates to "little/small castle field beer"

Ahoi Adam! 1.) Regarding clothing, armour and weapons: are you folks sometimes checking the Armour Plea thread? There are some great suggestions there in terms of historically inspired armour. Related to this: How renaissanc-y are the Vailian Republics going to be? What I've seen looks very 17th century-ish, especially some of the jackets and hats looked really musqueteery. Any chance for Landsknecht gear? You know, sliced clothing and all? 2.) As a backer with the Beta tier: Is the Beta you're going to release part of the original game or is it a Beta setting to just try out the different mechanics? I would prefer the latter to not get spoiled as far as story goes... (and I hate playing the starting section multiple times ) 3.) How are things going generally? Are you still optimistic (besides the "everything's going well stuff)? Or have you run in some unexpected problems? Well I could be wrong and you could think you're just posting a normal, harmless 'opinion'. Possibly I'm misinterpreting it as a spiteful expression of entitlement. In that case I would need to apologize. But you followed that up by the obviously trollish 'Fanboi Polizei', so I don't think I'm mistaken. Welcome to my ignore list. Wow, way to overreact I know the word entitlement gets thrown around the internet all the time as some sort of "knockout argument", but really, PE backers are entitled to know what's going on, since they have funded the game. Also it's absolutely legitimate to want to have more updates and information and everything PE-related. Instead of always interpeting everything as "spiteful expression of entitlement" you could just see it as eager fandom.- 261 replies

Their lack of a response only "proves" that they're working on other matters. All I'm seeing here is a bunch of trolling for more attention. Maybe if the posters had something more substantive to say they'd get a response? Personally I'm fine with waiting until they have something more solid to show. 1.) Are you serious? Observing this forum is not a herculean task requiring utmost attention and skill. Because this forum does not move fast. There are a few "standard" threads and every once in a blue moon a new one. It takes one glance to tell if it's a thread worth commenting. Obsidian may be hard working, but that does not mean that no one in a firm with 100+ can take five minutes of their time to get to the fans who funded their game, whilst discussing happily on other sites. Most of us probably work in some sort of office and you all know that this means you definitely have some spare time between tasks or whatever. Writing this answer to your post will take me probably four minutes. A lack of response, thus, does not prove anything. 2.) As Monte Carlo has said: voicing an opinion is now suddenly trolling? Just because it's not a fanboyistic opinion? Also, why is demanding better communication between devs and backers not substantial? There's a lack of communication, or at least some uf us think, that there's not enough communication. We voice that. What's not substantial about that?- 261 replies

Exactly what Lephys said. After all we're backers. We've got YOUR BACK, Obsidian. We're not your mortal enemies that will **** on everything you post. Give us a little bit of the taste, the atmosphere surrounding the development of PE. I mean you have a work day, you brainstorm, you discuss ideas, maybe you do some crazy things... Let us be part of it.- 261 replies

Yes, that's really weird. Probably the weirdest thing in this whole situation. Sawyer makes so many "updates" via Formspring and he's active in quite a few forums, but not his own? (or at least the codex, for that matter?)- 261 replies

The fulfillment site will be "something bigger" at least that's what they said in an earlier update. Probably a whole PE site (maybe even with the final name?) with a gameplay-video. Totally. For examples, look at the Goblinworks Dev Blog for Pathfinder Online. They only update it once every two weeks but it's always a really, really, really meaty update. I also wished JES and the other guys would come to the forum more often. I thought backers (and the community as a whole) would've going to be more involved in the whole development process.- 261 replies

If I didn't have fever and a bad cough at the moment, I would be up and taking the next flight to Irvine with torches and pitchforks in my luggage. Edit: But yeah, also glad to be of support and glad to be a part of it. Edit Edit: C2B, what was that about a fulfillment site announcement today? ;D- 261 replies

Seriously, who in their right mind studies Creative Writing? I'm all for writing, I write a lot of short stories and poems (some of them even got published) and I'm well-connected in my local "writer scene". Nobody there (especially not the really good ones) would EVER take creative writing classes. :D

To add this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_the_Author ____ Is it, really? I could argue, that it is more immersion-breaking, since that is a moronic sentence trying to cover up immersion-breaking sentences. Which is, in itself, immersion-breaking. It works the same with every intent to create "immersion"

Fulfilment site?
SophosTheWise replied to CrazyPea's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Of course they will, but people would like to know when. A little bit of information on that subject is common courtesy in my opinion. I mean, the backers have made it possible to have Project Eternity, so that's that. -
It's not all about topics and how the books blend into the game and serve some purpose. It's also, well mostly, about style. Game designers have never (or just very rarely) been good writers. They can sometimes write some pretty good dialogue, but other than that the literary value of text in games is mostly close to zero. I remember buying Skyrim for the Xbox 360 because I didn't have a PC back then. Maybe it was just a bad translation (into German) - I don't know, since I couldn't change the language settings - but whar I read was absolutely, horrifically, terrifyingly terrible. Seriously, I could've cringed at basically every sentence. It has been almost the same with all the games I've played throughout the years. I even find the books in Baldur's Gate to be not-so-top-notch, especially the ones that deal with mythology. I feel that the writers sometimes don't really understand the text types they're writing. I picked mythology here because that is probably one of the most difficult things to write without it sounding ripped off or it being a child's picture of mythology. So my point is: don't write lenghty books on every topic imaginable if you don't have a full-time-writer doing the job, and by full time I don't mean guys like R.A. Salvatore. I don't even know why I'm playing fantasy-games, because usually they're so damn terrible. Ugh.

Update #63: Stronghold!
SophosTheWise replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Love the update, I hope everything will be executed well. Because if those features are not implemented right, they could possibly be annoying. Arising problems: - How important is the Stronghold really? Because I would hate to see it becoming just a "buff and resupply"-place. - How much time will we spend there? Because if it's not somehow embedded into the story, I see it becoming a problem later when you advance in the story and, for instance, never go back there. What would you do with pop-ups every ten minutes that tell me of things going on there? - Attacks on the Stronghold are awesome, but how does the system behind it work? Is it just random? Because if it is, I'm pissed of. I want attacks to be meaningful and not just attacks. Of course there are robbers, but what robbers are actually courageous enough to attack a Stronghold full of heroes that could kill a robber with the blink of an eye? Also random attacks suck anyways, that has been proven in State of Decay. It's all just very gamey. But I think Obsidian can handle that well. Potentials: - Arriving guests with cool quests - Stronghold as a part of the story in some way - Meaningful interaction with the world, interaction that matters - Maybe some political decisions to make - Having a trophy room with dragon skulls, helmets of brutal villains etc. - Torture devices for the dungeon, see Inquisitor, especially for evil characters. Also possibility of ransoming captured foes. - not too RTS-y.- 455 replies

I'm for this idea. Let us show our vanity. If there's already a functioning economy, I would love to see a market for treasury. For example a parlour where one could trade historical paintings and such. Just writing this makes me think it's ludicrous but still, I'd like it. Also, if you have your gems on some pedestals, you'd have to install security stuff, because being a filthy rich son of a bitch attracts thiefs...
