The majority being the latter (parole/probation) but thats a little misleading as you can get probation without ever being sentenced to jail. Anyway, were harshing the funny here so maybe we can make a new thread if people want to continue discussing this.

So like 30 million people? Somehow I doubt your maths. Wasn't it 10 million? 1 of 10 is 10%. The current US population is 312 million. So 10% of 312 million is 31.2 million. I thought the vast majority of prisoners were for drug related offences, not stealing bread. Now we can debate whether drugs should land a person in jail if you like but lay of the hyperbole a bit.

I know sentencing has t obe consistent for justice to be done. But I was under the impression that the purpose of a judge is to take all factors into consideration. Taking 100 bucks and then turning yourself in does not seem an efficient use of a jail cell. Agreed. I remember another old case, whos name escapes me right now, about someone who stole a loaf of bread from a general store. Unfortunately the store was also a US post office so it became a federal offense and they threw the book at him. Fair? Hell no. But of course we can all comb the interwebz cherry picking isolated cases of unfairness.

The novelty of apps wore off long ago and 99% of the time its just a phone to me. @Wals: Granted Im not a chatty guy on the phone but I can literally go days between putting it on the charger. If youre constantly using it I think the "talk time" is 8-10 hours.
