RPGCodex Review #1 - Hŵrpa Dwrp
Marceror replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Am I the only one who love BG1 more than BG2? To me they're one big, beautiful game. Start with BG1, and then take your character through BG2. I happen to enjoy BG2 a bit more, but I enjoy BG1 plenty too. But anymore, if I'm going to play this series, I start with the first and make my way through to the SoA and finally ToB content. -

Which makes it no different than any other review, ever. In order to be objective, a review must not contain anything but a straight forward description of the game's features. Which would make it a completely sterile, worthless read. It'd look something like this: Pillars of Eternity is the latest title assigned to the Role Playing Genre by Obsidian Entertainment. It features a top down, Isometric viewpoint with hand drawn 2d environments and 3d character models. The Player controls a party of up to 6 characters, can choose from 7 races and 11 classes. It has leveling, and a main plot as well as several sub-quests of various degrees of complexity. Gameplay options include Exploration of specifically developed areas in the "Eora" game world, and boasts an unspecified number of hours of gameplay. It is a PC exclusive funded by a kickstarter campaign that occurred in the fall of 2012. It can be purchased through Steam, GoG, and assorted participating affiliates of Paradox Interactive. The end. This is the best review I've ever read! Ever. In my lifetime. About anything. Period! -

Well, trying playing PoE after its fully patched, with expansions, and you have 10+ years of nostalgia fueling your experience. Then you might be able to make a fair comparison between the 2 play throughs. At a bare minimum though you got to give Obsidian more time to patch. The game's barely been out for a month for crying out loud! I understand that first impressions are first impressions, but I'm just trying to interject a bit of perspective here. You're comparing PoE a few weeks after release to IWD2, fully patched, modded, etc, and there is some inherent unfairness with that comparison at this point. PoE is a brand new game, in a brand new world, with all new mechanics created with a rather paltry budget. IWD2 on the other hand was based on a well established IP and was the fifth and final Infinity Engine game, with several years of improvements and lessons learned that it benefitted from. PoE is a very good game with a lot of opportunity for improvement, which I believe Obsidian is committed to bringing about. It can only get better from here. -

Yes, you clearly need to try harder to hate the game. What's wrong with you! -

May the isometric RPG revolution continue to gain steam! -
Exaggerate much? Granted that there's still plenty of room to improve, but I have a hard time swallowing that the game's mechanics are colossal failure, since I'm enjoying them too much for that to be true. We have a major balance patch in the works, and I'm sure many patches after that. It will only get better.

About that expansion....
Marceror replied to Marceror's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Whatever they do with the expansion, it will enrich the game. PoE deserve to have that opportunity. Plus, many of us have already backed an expansion through Kickstarter and would be more than a little miffed not to get it. Not to mention how bad this would look for Obsidian to shirk on a commitment. -
Okay, right. I remember the double click thing now that you mention it. The thing is, I've had Kana in my party since the beginning. I've been playing the game since launch, and I've never had Kana lose his weapon slot. I find it odd that it's only happened within minutes of first playing patch 1.04. Seems like something has regressed.

Yes, he was dominated during the fight. That said, domination of party members is just a reality of life in this game. Now I'm worried that I may have lost passive with other characters. What about my main character? I recall a similar (the same?) bug that was supposedly resolved in 1.03. So shouldn't this not be happening at this point?

Hmm, more info. It appears that some of my saves don't have this change. It's only the most recent, after fighting a battle in Noonfrost. Something seems not good about this. I also note that the talent/feat that grants the third weapon slot isn't on her list anymore. WTF? EDIT - I went back and replayed the same area. This has happened twice after a battle with 3 sorcerers a priest, and a couple of paladins. Weird. Guess I'll take a break from the game until there is more definitive information about what is going on. I don't want to bug my game up this late into the game.

I've seen threads stating combat is too hard. Others stating that it's too easy. So... anyone feel that it's just about right? I do at this point. Combat is generally more challenging to me than it was in most of the IE games, and that is very much a welcome change. The different difficulty levels seems to add an appreciable difference to the overall difficulty, without just making enemies hit harder. So the difficulty slider is far more elegant than we had with IE. I realize that the engagement mechanics are controversial, but I happen to like them. I'm still finding plenty of opportunities to vary my tactics and from one battle to the next. Maybe I don't strictly need to do this, but I am, and am finding combat enjoyable still (I'm still somewhere in Act III). Now, there certainly is still plenty opportunity to tune combat, improve AI, and so forth. I'm not saying otherwise, but overall I feel that the difficulty level of the game has hit a pretty good target. It probably bears noting that this is being stated by a 17 year IE veteran. I picked up the original Baldurs Gate off the shelf at Best Buy shortly after it was released. Well, technically my college roommate at the time did, but he found the game to be too complex and he gifted it to me later that same day. But, I was there when he grabbed it off the shelf, and I think that counts for something. I was utterly oblivious to the impact the contents of that box would have on me.

Just pry your space bar out of your keyboard. If you want, smash it with a hammer so you won't be tempted to put it back in. -
[1.04] Music absolutely murdered by patch

Are you currently experiencing a power outage in your area? Is your computer currently turned on? Does your VCR blink 12:00? Wait, you have a VCR? A few helpful standard IT questions from my past.... Incidentally, if you want to make rebooting sound impressive, you call it power cycling. Have you power cycled your system? Some people will think you have really "innovative" troubleshooting ideas if you ask them this.
