[Merged] Cooldown Thread
Hypevosa replied to Ieo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I think the best way to figure out cool downs is simply this: How long is the longest time one should have to wait for a spell to come back? If I fire off one of the most powerful spells in the game, should I be forced to rest to get it back? Can I get it back in maybe 9 or 12 hours? What is it that's holding me back? Then we need to discuss how long the weakest spell should take to come back. If I cast identify on an item, how long should I have to wait to do it again? I think a cast of Identify shouldn't take more than half an hour outside of combat to come back myself - that seems reasonable and balanced to me. If I cast wish though, I think it should take at least 9 hours outside of combat to come back. Scaling between that seems reasonable to me.- 661 replies

Agreed. That was the brilliance of the BG games, you had to choose when and on what to cast your spells on carefully. Made up for a much more tactical combat as contrary to the cooldown system where you basically always cast the most powerful spell available. I'll also agree, but any cooldowns where you instantly get all your best spells once a combat ends is just as bad - the issue always becomes that my mage casting fireball every single solitary fight and blowing up the entire enemy party is really overpowered, but taking the ability to display that much power away from mages is as unkind as making it so rogue's can't backstab someone in one blow, or warriors can't critical and cause fleshy bits to fly everywhere as the screen shakes. Mages thrive on being awesome, and, for balance's sake they can't be awesome EVERY fight, if cooldowns work too quickly then we can't have that :\- 661 replies

Proposed Inventory System
Hypevosa replied to Hypevosa's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I still have an issue with having a raw volume measurement, as that doesn't take into account shape at all. For example, while the adventurer's backpack I proposed would theoretically fit 2 full plate armors in it, there's no way one could actually do so without a giant portion of one of the chest plates poking out the top of the pack, or without cutting the chest plate in half and sandwiching it around the other. There is something to be said for bulky items needing to be taken into account. Honestly full plate armor and similar things shouldn't be the most common armors found anyways. Same with a halberd or a claymore - how does that ever fit into a backpack? That's why I kept the strap slots. -

I was mostly leaning toward wanting a Vancian system in the game, but after reading this, I think I might have just had my mind changed. Why not give the player ingame knowledge of what to prepare for? An encounter with a lich written in an adventurer's diary detailing the spells it used on his fellow adventurers before horribly wounding him and allowing him to wander the cave till his minions ate him alive. A rumor overheard after some mead of spell caster X who specializes in illusions. Finding a mage's spellbook in his room long before you actually face him. Etc. There should be ways of finding out info before battles. that definitely can work, but it really takes away the feeling of intelligence for figuring out a fight. Typically when something like that is included it feels like the game just beats you over the head with the answer and the fight ends up lacking any excitement because you already know what to expect. If it can be done well, I would definitely like to see this implemented instead of just removing that aspect of choosing spells. That depends on what the game tells you. "THE GUY WOULDN'T STOP CASTING MAGIC MISSILE" is different from the game explicitly telling you to cast the shield spell since it makes you immune. "He pointed his finger at orville and, in a flash of green light, he disappeared into a pile of ash!" is different from "he cast disintegrate". If you make the player have to know the spells and lore to know the answer, they've done their reconnaissance - and in a much less cheesy way than fighting and reloading.- 661 replies

simple cool down system - instead of requiring rest to regain spells, have spells slowly be regained, starting with the lowest levels which "recharge" the fastest, and the higher spells taking longer to recharge, and only recharging after the earlier ones have charged. This way the spells maintain potency and diversity so they're key strategy pieces like the vancian system, but you aren't forced to rest to regain them.- 661 replies

That's what I'm thinking too. The biggest thing that loses from the vancian system is that you can't load up multiples of the same spell. If you can prepare the same spell multiple times and each one has its own cool down we could still have multiple magic missile castings. I loved having the robe of vecna and making magic missile laser shows... :D

the way he compares it to D&D but says they're cool downs to make you not need to sleep makes it seem like you'll slowly recover spells so you just aren't required to use the rest button when the rest of your party is still perfectly able, which is alright with me.

"Semi-random loot lists" confirmed
Hypevosa replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I assume random loot would be "Drops X coins or X gems" etc. I really hope things drop what they wear at least lol. -
If it's not like DAO, then I'm fine with it - I just want spells to be genuinely potent, interesting, and useful like in BG2. I want spells that level whole troups of kobolds, and high level spells that take a chunk of health out of deadly foes, not arcane blast...

Proposed Inventory System
Hypevosa replied to Hypevosa's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Why have a bank when you can have your own, permanent secret chest, or can just store everything in your house? (We already know we're getting one) Your system just seems to be giving the player extra stuff for doing nothing but having money... what's the point when they could just spend it on good gear and useful things instead? Hoarding should be a choice a player makes because they like doing such things, not because it actually gives them any real advantage beyond having anything they need. -
Yeah, she's kinda ridiculous... I mean, showing midriff, cleavage, and having formfitting leather? sure, but having essentially no armor at all? Unless they're a barbarian who gets a bonus to raging while plum naked (ADOM reference :D) it's just plain silly. Charisma bonus to AC for people not wanting to destroy such raw beauty only works for nymphs

Forcing people do be evil or selfish for a legendary item is unkind - it's not like to forge the ultimate sword of evil you'd need to save the lives of a hundred babies or something >_> I agree, there should be some items where making them involves an act of selfishness, but having that be at all a common theme would just be punishing role players for sticking with alignment.

It's clear that it isn't something that should be the common theme for armors, but to say that there would never be a female that uses her sexuality as a strength for weak minded opponents is silly. A rogue who gets into trouble often but knows exactly how to wiggle her way out of it? A sorceress that specializes in charm and illusion spells and has used this in conjunction with her own seductive features to get money for magical research or to get into a position of power within a kingdom? Not all characters should be sexualized, this is not DOA, but there are reasons some might choose to abuse their physical form where it gives them an advantage. If the character's personality supports such a thing, I have no quarrel with it, but I agree, a noble female paladin should not be flashing cleavage or anything close.

What if mana potions were rare and worked only outside combat by slowly regenerating some mana? Hardcore enough? Call mana "soul energy" or whatever if it makes it sound more hardcore for you. Great points ! I feel if you want D&D play what's out there now don't try to make PE into a D&D game. Because people who like certain features of old games aren't allowed to have new games with those features, right? The issue is any D&D labeled game coming out now pretty much sucks... I was excited when the D&D game was coming out for the xbox 360 - but that was quickly squashed when I played the demo... yuck.

It's always a little cool (yet disappointing) to see one of my ideas has been done already, or at least very close. -
Metamagic Feats
Hypevosa replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
If we could have a custom spell creation system, much like weapons get their creation and enhancement system at the 2.4 million mark, that would be cool. Choose an existing spell and modify it, the game telling you what level the spell will be based on the differences. -
I trust the money will be used to hire more people so the game stays on course but can get more features.

I have to agree, if there's a mana bar and/or cooldown instead of tons of awesome and unique spells like D&D, I'll back out as well.
