  1. Totally. What people far too often seem to forget is there are actually people behind names and logos of those corporations. You just can't say Bethesda and Obsidian have good/bad relationship like you can't say Finland and Russia have good/bad relations, even though lots of politicians and media use that phrase even though it's something absurd and non-existent. Obsidian might (just might) have some disagreement with publishing side of Bethesda Softworks, because of their lost bonuses for New Vegas, but I doubt they have any problems with Todd Howard and whole game developing side. They are professionals and can handle these kind of things. Contract is a contract and they agreed to it's terms, knew the risks and in this particular case those risks unfortunately became reality. EDIT: There is no reason to be angry at Bethesda.
  2. I have got enough of that overly mixed wailing with massive echo too. Can't stand it anymore. It's so cheesy and sugary I'll probably throw up if I have to hear it one more time.
  3. Favorite games: - Planescape: Torment - The Witcher series Which should PE be most like: - Planescape for it's deep story and characters. - Witcher for it's difficulty and choices that matter. Also great soundtrack for medieval setting. - BG/BG2 for overall feel of the gameworld. - DA:O (DA2 not included) for modernizing the genre while still preserving most of the old-school feel.
  4. Have you read the entire thread? never said that opinion isnt ok to express. looking for people to back up their opinion so there can be better conversation all around No I haven't read entire thread. Only first and these last two pages, but tell me how do I back that opinion? It's kind of self-evident what it means and there really is nothing more to say to that, but it's opinion nonetheless. If ideas get shot down by comments like that then it means it was not worth discussion... people didn't care or want Obsidian to surprise them. It's the nature of internet forum that not every idea will fly. EDIT: It would of course be great if everyone could present their ideas equally, but it would be just too much for developers to handle all that information. That's why forum is great for presenting ideas: It has kind of natural censorship, which keeps important things afloat and lets unimportant ones fall to the bottom.
  5. Am I just imagining or has there been increasing number of crusades against injustices of the internet lately? Maybe I should make thread about that for a change. P.S. Isn't "Let Obsidian make the game they want" just another opinion?
  6. I suggest Justin Bieber and Rihanna sing duet in the main theme of Project Eternity. I usually don't think musical numbers fit into games very well. For example Lelianna's Song in DA:O came so out of blue I almost laughed. It just felt stupid. Only place I could think would be fit for solo singing is in game credits or during montage sequences, which I highly doubt we'll see in PE. Bards in Skyrim were also ok. And no singing in English! I don't know why, but I cannot stand it in fantasy games. It has to be done in some fictional language.
  7. Maybe player could find some bandits camping in top levels of the dungeon and when you fight them you would suddenly see some of them getting killed by some inexplicable force/creature/ghost/whatever and then complete silence... only bloody corpses lying around. I can already feel the tension in that situation. I want this place to be so terrifying I see nighmares after playing it.
  8. This. I think Moria in The Lord of the Rings would be great example. Ancient underground city where something terrible broke out decades or even centuries ago and no one has yet been brave enough to go find out what it was. It could start with no enemies at all only catching glimpses of what has happened and what you may expect in depths of those ruins and then you encounter some easy but unusual creatures and from that point on you will slowly unravel what terrible secret lies ahead of you. It has to have it's quiet moments from time to time though. Puzzles, exploring interesting places etc. Sudden silence is what makes me squirm in my chair and in the other hand nothing breaks tension as well as flooding millions of enemies at player all the time.
  9. It pretty much depends on story they are writing. If you want to make main character dragon it limits your choices drastically. It would most likely be just another chosen one plot, because in my opinion transforming into dragon should not be just a cheap magic trick: People being able to do that have to be born with the ability and it has to be written into story somehow. I would like to see more intimate and concentrated plot this time. Not just another Chose one/Dragonborn saving the world from inevitable destruction. EDIT: Exactly. I think Dragons should be something very rare and incredibly powerful creatures. Something you don't want to get in fight with.
  10. It happens to older people as well. Just look at those Vancian magic -threads and you will see they can be pretty extreme too. EDIT: What can change the nature of a man... Obviously it's not age.:D
  11. I'm not trying to force you choose. You misunderstood me. And I was not implying that. You misunderstood me too. I'm just pretty sure everyone or at least most of us keep BG in very high regard and I don't see reason why it should be manifested like this when it's so obvious. If someone doesn't like it it's just different opinion and they are entitled to have it. My special support is not going to change that.
  12. I think you are mistaken. I like Planescape: Torment more, but that's not saying BG is in any way inferior. I don't see why I should choose just one when they are both great.
  13. @Teuthida: To be honest I didn't follow the chat too carefully, but I didn't see anyone saying anything like that during that whole time. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but most of commenters were just lightly joking around. I just can't see any huge injustice here that needs an apology. If someone said that it definitively was inappropriate and stupid, but hardly an excuse to start women rights campaign here on this forum.
  14. You missed the part about my comment applying to 'IRL' and all that. I guess reading comprehension isn't your guys' strength. That same rule applies in so called real life too. (IMO internet is pretty real too, but maybe it's just me) Most if not every women like attention and compliments about their appearance. So do guys. That same thing happens in real life all the time (maybe in a little different tone) and it really isn't this big deal. It's just great ego boost form time to time. I just hate it when people are being overprotective over everything.
  15. It's not wrong but this thread exaggerates this far too much. It really wasn't that bad. There were many good questions answered, most commenters were appropriate, Feargus' kids were adorable, Avellone and Alvin were great hosts and kept us entertained for whole six hours. It was great evening, but some people here make it sound like it was complete disgrace while it clearly wasn't. In context, I have to wonder if they felt compelled to do so to get more KS pledges. Context does matter (unmoderated internet stream), but that wasn't a singles bar, either. The dismissive attitudes are generally disappointing; I just hope people realize that that sort of behavior and the attitude of "no one got hurt, it's no big deal" doesn't fly IRL for various reasons either. The reduction and trivialization of a woman to her sexuality with that type of attention creates a short path to her feeling genuinely uncomfortable and threatened in many situations. That is never okay. Yeah, the girl looked so threatened and uncomfortable. She even made jokes about that herself... oh, she must have done it just for KS pledges! How terrible! Seriously: Boys like girls. Girls like boys. Girls like to be liked by boys and boys like to be liked by girls. No big deal, everyone knows this and most have already accepted this rule of life.
  16. I second this. Nothing special. Just usual internet and I think this thread is overreacting. Everybody had fun, nobody got hurt... oh, except OP here. There's nothing wrong with pointing out that people are sometimes horrible little ****. Saying 'That's fine, it's the internet' doesn't help things. Not that this whole thread is going to change anything in a large way, but I'd rather see people saying 'I hate how other people abuse anonymity to try to ruin other people's fun' than not. Actually that's exactly what helps. As I said in my first post, don't feed the troll and it will go away. As long as people keep frowning upon such activity and raise a fuss about it, they are going to keep doing it. But as soon as everybody just ignores them and moves on with their lives without single comment trolls seem to suddenly get bored and go try their luck on some other comment section. If we take this "green shirt girl crisis" as an example, you could see how those spam comments decreased when the girl was out of picture and during that time Josh actually could anwer few serious questions, but as soon as she came back and started playing along spammers got active again. But for me that was not big deal and no one at office seemed to take offence either so I'm fine with it.
  17. I second this. Nothing special. Just usual internet and I think this thread is overreacting. Everybody had fun, nobody got hurt... oh, except OP here.
  18. No need to apologize anything if you were not one writing those comments. I think it went pretty well given that it's internet after all. Those few inappropriate comments were effectively ignored by everyone in front of the camera and that's how it should be: Just don't feed the troll and it will go away. That green shirt girl thing then again was harmless. Just little joke which grew into meme during that show. I'm sure all folks at Obsidian had as great time yesterday as we did.
  19. What a senseless post. So you are basically saying that you don't want Witcher-style music in this because CDPR put Nightwish CD in their gamebox and you bought it? And now you bunch Nightwish and The Witcher soundtrack together, even though they are almost completely different? Are you also one of those people who don't like it when mashed potatoes and vegetables touch each other on your plate? I mean no offence, but isn't that basically the same thing? Maybe you could tell us what isn't in your 'stereotypical corner', because you blacklisted almost all styles fitting into medieval setting? This so called "dark metal" doesn't even have it's own themes. It draws inspiration from classical music and if that's banned also then we probably end up enjoying the silence for whole game. BTW I love Nightwish, but I have never been goth nor have I ever been so called metal-head either. I just love good music in all it's forms so don't you talk about stereotypes cause you have clearly created them in your own mind. I was in Nightwish concert last summer and didn't see single goth in audience, but lots of ordinary music lovers from children to elderly people. If you have somehow managed to create antipathy for one of the greatest game soundtracks of all time because of that "stereotypical goth-band" then it's your loss. EDIT: Last sentence in your post is pretty harsh generalization. Just because you have limited taste in music it doesn't mean everyone else is like that. Open mind is best way to approach all music, prejudice is useless and prevents you from enjoying game in full.
  20. I've been very impressed by the work of Clint Mansell lately. Especially soundtrack of The Fountain (A Film by Darren Aronofsky) is great example of how to build unbearable suspension and many different emotions from one fairly simple theme and with reasonable resources. I don't think that score was very expensive to make compared to many others. Lots of soloists and small ensembles used. This particular score might be too modern for fantasy game, but it might contain some valuable ideas. Examples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUgC6215Gko More epic one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihF_aXi-Huk
  21. i thought 500 dollar and up tiers do not have shipping costs They don't, and neither does $30 cover a shirt *and* playing cards. Either three decks of cards, or a shirt and $5 leftover for a dev's coffee. Could do a separate $5 pledge on PayPal to make something of it I guess. Maybe they let that 5$ go if he asks nicely.:D
  22. I'm absolutely sure they will extend their deadline if necessary, but 3 years is far too much. DA:O and Mass Effect are modern multiplatform-games made by modern standards. Better comparison would be Baldur's Gate which was made in about three years by unexperienced team and completely from scratch. Almost 20 years of technological advancement, ready engine, experienced team, many great examples on how to make this kind of games and no publisher breathing down their necks... April 2014 sounds very reasonable to me. Don't underestimate Obsidian: Some of those guys have been in industry for decades. They know what they are promising. That's good point, consoles are time and money consuming, but I actually think the graphical style they chose takes as much or even more time than 'real' 3D, because they still have to model all the areas, render them, and then have artists to enhance the final image.
  23. No info yet, but Obsidian has promised to send us surveys about our rewards during next 2 weeks. We will probably get our badges after that since our Kickstarter accounts are not connected to these forums in any way and it would be impossible to get those badges for right people yet.
  24. Final score... 290$ =~221,15€ - 250$ + 30$ for international shipping + 10$ for deck of cards. Watched last hours stream last night (It was 4 AM in Finland when KS campaign ended) and I must have caught some of that craziness. Tried to convince myself to leave the cards out, but there is something magically alluring about those small cardboard flaps.
  25. OP forgot one important option, which is "I don't care", because I really don't care as long as it fits in overall gameplay mechanics. There are hundreds of different and equally fun ways to do this and I'm not the one to tell Obsidian which is best for a game that currently only exists in brilliant minds of their designers.
