What are they doing with rangers in deadfire?
rjshae replied to firkraag888's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)I'm going to guess that the spirit animal does cold damage? Maybe they will also acquire some of the other abilities of shadows or phantoms?

crazy ideas you like to have (but most likely not get)
rjshae replied to Madscientist's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)There is a cursed weapon in PoE. Do you mean the Dissapointer or the Unlabored Blade? Both are "kinda" cursed but not really--the effect is temporary and limited to that weapon only. I assumed they were talking about The Grey Sleeper where you cant unequipp it. Yup. I'd have mentioned it, but thought it could be a spoiler to say so. I wouldn't call the Grey Sleeper cursed, because while it can't be removed it has no negative effects and that's *really* important to the idea of a "cursed" item to me. Really, PIllars only does half-baked "cursed" items--stuff that has negative penalties to the items effects, sometimes that can be overcome, or simply the "can't be removed" deal but with no negative effects associated with it. There are not any cursed items in the sense of items that bestow negative effects on the characters and cannot be removed until they are uncursed, which is really the definition of "cursed item" that I feel most people go on when they hear the term. There are many ways to build a cursed item, and they don't necessarily involve negative penalties. One just needs to open ones mind to the possibilities. Yes, but when one says "cursed item" there is a conception in the average RPG players mind of what a cursed item is, and Pillars *does not do that*. That's my point; "cursed items" as are generally thought of are not a thing in this game, they do *other* things instead because they specifically dislike the "cursed items" trope. Aye, fair enough. But this is a thread for crazy ideas we most likely not get.

Things you want PoE 2 to specifically avoid if possible
rjshae replied to Katarack21's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)^ Yes, that makes sense. I wonder though about the "shattered soul" concept that was discussed early on in the development of PoE. Shouldn't non-party members have more difficulty applying their might in this manner?

Tactics
rjshae replied to ilhdr's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)What I didn't like about DA:O tactics was that you had a fixed limit to the number of slots you could create, then you'd eventually earn more slots as if that were some type of XP award.

crazy ideas you like to have (but most likely not get)
rjshae replied to Madscientist's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)On top of a lonely volcanic island is a towering peak with a long, winding road leading to the top. There, the intrepid PC will find a grotto inhabited by a slightly crazed hermit philosopher by the name of The Mighty Grecko. This scrawny-looking old man has amassed a surprisingly large library of scrolls and tomes that all speculate on the nature of souls and magic. Grecko's ultimate aim is to determine why the spiritual energy of an individual seems to be directly linked to their physical strength. He can discuss the topic at great length, listing all of the numerous conjectures for this condition and he endlessly wonders why a scrawny wizard is only able to summon the most paltry fireball spell. In the end, the only viable conclusion he has reached it that it is "the will of the gods". He shudders at the consequences should it be otherwise.

Things you want PoE 2 to specifically avoid if possible
rjshae replied to Katarack21's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)It's a matter of semantics really. All of the PoE attributes represent more than one thing. Aye, I think I'll follow your example. *clunk*

Things you want PoE 2 to specifically avoid if possible
rjshae replied to Katarack21's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Yes, that part is a little odd. The same with crossbows. Perhaps it's another one of those abstractions used to avoid messy implementation details like applying damage limits to various weapons?

Things you want PoE 2 to specifically avoid if possible
rjshae replied to Katarack21's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)This quote contains both the question and answer to that question :-P Debates with easy right answers aren't particularly interesting, eh? And as I pointed out, you can absolutely create a mage with low Might value - he's just not going to be very good at throwing fireballs everywhere. Which is fine as making sacrifices is one of the cornerstones of RPGs, isn't it? You don't think being physically strong is an odd requirement for a Wizard to be able to throw potent fireballs? Don't you think it would depend on the setting and the physical laws for that environment? If you want to be "realistic" about magic, then an important consideration is internal consistency. I believe that is satisfied in this case. To me the only odd thing is in thinking that a particular relationship from one game and setting (D&D-like magical mythology in a western European-like world) should be satisfied by an entirely different game and setting (PoE in Eora). I don't know if the developers intend to make the PoE game rules a universal system, but in that case this concern could be dealt with appropriately through a different balancing mechanic. For right now though, it only needs to work for one setting and one system of magic.

rjshae replied to Katarack21's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Heh, fixed it for you. Really mature. Thanks for showing everyone, again, the kind of behavior that can be expected from your side of the argument. My pleasure as always. Good luck to you.

I never finished Pillars of Eternity.
rjshae replied to JFSOCC's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)It's not a problem that needs to be solved. It works fine just the way it is, albeit with some tweaking and fine tuning.

Things you want PoE 2 to specifically avoid if possible
rjshae replied to Katarack21's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)If they are interested in me both buying the game *and* not complaining about it then hell yeah it does. I very much doubt they will make such a major change at this time, so I expect they'll have to put up with the lack of your purchase.

Things you want PoE 2 to specifically avoid if possible
rjshae replied to Katarack21's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Because... it's magic. The setting doesn't have to fit to your expectations of how magic works; you have to adapt to it. Physical strength and spiritual strength are the same thing. Stop trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

- How big will deadfire be?
rjshae replied to firkraag888's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)I take the opposite view where those "empty" areas provide an opportunity for exploration. To me exploration suggest there is something interesting to find (well constructed encounter, quest, unique event, nice location). Many of the wilderness locations were quite dull, with dull combat encounters. Hmm, well exploration means travel into the unknown in order to learn about it. The key work being travel. You don't have to find something deep and interesting every other minute; this isn't a music video. I'm fine with so-called "dull" wilderness locations because they highlight the interesting locales. That's what travelling the wilderness is like, and in that sense they're much like similar areas in Baldur's Gate. My preference would have been to include more such wilderness areas with a few interesting highlights.- RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS
No, it's the TwitterZone. The Twilight Zone was more like the real world.- Combat improvements in PoE 2?
rjshae replied to 1varangian's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Unlikely. That's a common motif among fantasy cRPG games.- Things you want PoE 2 to specifically avoid if possible
rjshae replied to Katarack21's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)The exterior area maps in PoE felt like they were channeling movement too much. I'd prefer something closer to square, or at least more roomy vertically as in the Baldur's Gate series. Yes I understand the isometric perspective plays a role, but they could compensate for that by making them taller.- I never finished Pillars of Eternity.
rjshae replied to JFSOCC's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Sounds like this isn't the game for you then, and I'm fine with that. Good luck finding a game you'll enjoy. - What's so Funny?
