Bows: Limited ammo?
True_Spike replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I prefer limited ammo, myself. -

I'd personally prefer the translation to be done by experienced professionals, even if it's not going to be me . But if Obsidian decide they'd rather have fans do the job, I'm sure we'll manage to gather a team of skilled enthusiasts. Well, I am a professional translator myself. I know that inXile intends to fansource their translations of Wasteland 2, but I think it's a mistake. With so much text that needs to be kept consistent between various dialogues etc., you need to, at the very least, one professional per language to then edit that fan translation for errors and consistency. Translator high five! I doubt a single person will have enough time to proofread *and* correct every line of text in the game without a significant drop of quality, unless localizations are to be released way after the English version. It has to be done by a well coordinated group of professionals right from the get-go -

That way I just won't play it. Or send them any money. If they think they have enough presence in the SE Asian market to make the leap more power to them on kickstarter.cn I still have WL2 and SRR The enjoyment won't be worse than with a butchered translation, which you can count on getting on many occasions. Could you please give me next week's lottery numbers, while you're at it, because you seem to know a great deal about the future. You must be a time traveller. The quality of the localization, not a translation, depends entirely on the how the process is handled and by whom. Do not make it seem like localizing a game *well* is hard to do - it's not. On the contrary! Projects of this sort are butchered when the company responsible is trying to cut corners. There are many examples of stellar localizations in the world of gaming, just as there are examples of the bad ones. -

There's a subtle difference in understanding a language and speaking it fluently. A huge portion of the self-proclaimed foreign English speakers is not capable of understanding everything they read or hear. In a text-based game focusing on complete immersion and built around an intricate plot it is vital for the player to be able to fully grasp the narrative - not simply understand it; That way you don't get to appreciate all its colour and flavour. It's not only a matter of the game's playablity, but it's quality in the eyes of the potential customer, and that sense of high polish and quality will probably be lost on people without a reasonable command of the English language. Depending on how much Obsidian is willing to spend on translations, I think Polish and Russian are reasonable choices, because very few people in these two countries speak English on a decent enough level to enjoy the game the way intended. Mandarin seems like an interesting idea, business-wise, because the target market is, simply put, huge and Asians, in general, have a very poor understanding of English. -
Companion loyalty system?
True_Spike replied to lordgizka's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Do not make a "mini game" out of the loyality system. It should be hidden for that reason alone - so that people won't bother simply maxing out a yet another statistic. A player should want to engage in conversations with NPCs and learn more about it because they are interesting and he wants to develop the relationship further to learn even more. A loyality system is a must, because NPCs should have their own opinion and be vocal about it. When it comes to NPCs, nonconformism all the way. -
Where is the update?
True_Spike replied to chisled2bone's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
How is this an issue? The guy was simply asking a question and he got an answer - he has to wait a few more hours. Let the thread die and stop making a problem out of everything. If we don't get to see it today then I'll be more than happy to see the update first thing in the morning -
The Chosen One
True_Spike replied to TrashMan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Chosen one or not, the PC must be special in one way or another, because no ordinary person is capable of feats a typical PC pulls off during the course of a normal RPG. Play Harvest Moon if you want your character to feel mundane and completely normal. How is the PC labeled depends entirely on the plot and I could not care less if he's the chosen one or anything else for that matter. I just want to feel the connection, I want to feel immersed and I want it to make sense within the setting established in the game. It may be a cliche, but it hardly changes anything for me. -
Healing
True_Spike replied to Nonek's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
People who want any tiime consuming healing mechanics only want them because they think they're original and cool, but fail to see the big picture. Repeat this original mechanic a few hundred times over the course of the game and it will soon become obvious it's nothing more than a frustrating chore, completely breaking the flow of the game and worsening your overall gaming experience. -
Healing
True_Spike replied to Nonek's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Instant regeneration after battles is lame, it has to go. I understand why it is used in the first place - people abuse any slow regeneration or rest-based healing systems by waiting / resting for however long is necessary after each fight to fully recover HP. This breaks the flow of the game and gets boring quite fast (but many players do it anyway, because they can - and so would I). However, instant regeneration completely breaks my immersion (a word that appears in every single of my posts, I know). What's worse, NPCs are often raised from death after battles automatically if at least a single group member survived - that mechanic is an abomination. That said, you really can't make healing too complicated. It is a game, after all. Any mechanic that is easy to abuse or tedious enough to promote reloads instead is a bad one. I am completely fine with spells / potions / abilities used to recover HP. What I want is for them not to be abundant - to make the player feel like having a few spare healing potions around is of utmost importance, that they should be used only when absolutely necessary. -
Where is the update?
True_Spike replied to chisled2bone's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I was wondering that as well. It's getting late in Europe and I was hoping to see the update before I'm off to bed. -
Obsidian plans to make a sequel - I want my character to be a God-slaying machine by the end of the 2nd game. A BG-like progression (albeit a tad more equally divided between two games) would suit it the best. To be honest, though, it's really hard to determine things like this without knowing anything about the game itself.

[Merged] Durability
True_Spike replied to Audron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I hate durability and similar mechanics. They contribute in no way to the game and are just a chore. -
BG2 is the longest / biggest IE game by far. PS:T doesn't come anywhere near its scope. It is true, though, that people have no idea how much money is needed to develop a game. The $1,1kk Obsidian asked for is obviously the bare minimum. If they got 10x more I guaran****intee not a single penny would be wasted.

How should the UI look?
True_Spike replied to Rostere's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
A solid, good looking, but customizable UI with a mini-map toggle would be great. The UI in the original Dragon Age was fairly decent. It had its problems, but it was fine overall. And I do agree with one of the posters above - in today's age "wasted" space is not an issue with HD resolutions and big ass monitors. -
I love those! It's very rare to see a well planned out quest of that sort in any game, though. The murder investigation quest in the first Witcher was my favourite one by far - not only would the outcome change the plot a bit, you wouldn't know if you did it right or wrong immediately. You'd have a false sense of acomplishment and security if you did a half-assed job during the autopsy.

Paypal + kickstarter
True_Spike replied to wisien92's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The fact that they still don't support paypal is just terrible. And by "they" I mean Obsidian. -
How old is everyone?
True_Spike replied to qstoffe's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Make sure to mod the game. Visit the gibberlings3 site, download and install the patch, fixes, tweaks, unfinished business, widescreen and the UI mods. -
Kick it forward support?
True_Spike replied to Dalliance5's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Oh, I must have misunderstood that. In that case, it's a beautiful initiative and I'm very supportive of it. It is, however, Obsidian's decision in the end. -
Teleportation
True_Spike replied to Dem's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You can easily make up and specify limitations of teleportation (You can only teleport a certain distance away, you can only teleport to a structure of some sort etc.) Dimension Door in BG was a teleportation spell and it fit the lore just fine. All in all, it's not something I'm worried about, because problems of the mentioned sort are *very* easy to rectify. -
Kick it forward support?
True_Spike replied to Dalliance5's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm actually against it. I've decided to back this particular project and I'd rather all the money was spend on it. Every single penny. I do not believe Obsidian should spend money they got from the community to fund their project on other things. If I feel like supporting a different project, I will do it myself and so will the others. I do feel the idea is a very noble one, but I don't think it should be done this way. If every single person who pledged to support a project could *choose* if he wants his pledge to be a part of Kick it Forward than I would be fine with it.
