Spill your blasphemous opinions on CRPGs here
aluminiumtrioxid replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Computer and Console
That title - sadly - belongs to The Stick of Truth, IMHO. Or NWN2 OC. Kinda hard to decide. -
Funniest thing, in the tabletop game Mage: the Awakening, even a starting character has access to a spell that works essentially the same (only for rounds, not minutes).

I've found it quite enjoyable. But it's definitely not an RPG. -
So you play D&D 4th ed? What about Lair Assault type encounters? If not, then perhaps looking them up and educating yourself? Well, those are designed with the assumption that TPKs are not only possible, but likely, even with a 'correct' party composition, so... So do you play 4th ed? And if we did have a tank, we would have beaten it. Party composition is important and you need all four roles for them. And the likely outcome when we play Lair Assault type encounters is we win, not a TPK. Teamwork is a must with all four roles in them. We rarely get TPKs and some of the closest encounters we have is one man left standing. Resurrection at Temples are a great thing. Occasionally, I did; the fine chaps I play with, however, were not that keen on it. We tried a Berserk-inspired low-magic game, but returned to Dark Heresy fairly swiftly. Still, in 4e, it's generally pretty hard to die. Most of the time, you can get by even with a suboptimal party composition. On the other hand, Lair Assault games are specifically marketed as the highest tactical challenge the system could offer, so I really don't understand how you expected to win with a non-optimized party. If you went in with a all roles covered, but with poorly optimized characters, you'd probably have died anyways.

Alternatives: - The wizard has to continuously concentrate on maintaining the spell (may mean any of the following: can't do anything / unable to cast spells at all, movement rate reduced, but weapon use is permitted / can cast per-encounter and at-will spells / can cast whatever, but enemy interrupt chance increases dramatically). With specific talents this might get easier. - The wizard gets half/full damage to Stamina, but not Health whenever the dominated person is hit, with a chance to trigger interruption as usual.

They will probably be roll-to-hit vs. Will save (or whatever they call it), allowing for crits, hits, grazes and misses as usual, giving a bit more granularity to work with. Dunno exactly how, but I guess a charm-type spell could do nothing on a miss, inflict some kind of a light penalty on a graze (like a drop in attack?), outright deny the use of agressive abilities on a hit, and turn the afflicted party member against you only on a crit? This way, freak accidents can happen, but you're not necessarily forced to reload. Also, it might be possible that each class has something that allows them to resist such trickery, therefore you're not necessarily out of luck if you didn't bring a member of a specific class with you?

Pretty sure I've already seen it somewhere, but still.

Never particularly liked that specific novel, but yeah, ****'s good. Although I can't help but feel that his short stories work better than the novels.

Books to read: - Hyperion, by Dan Simmons. Probably the best SF I've ever read. It also has some follow-up novels, but they lack its elegance. - Ilium and Olympos are also quite enjoyable by him. - In the science fantasy category, you can't really get better than Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series. - I generally don't like cyberpunk, but if you haven't yet read the comic Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis, it's time to remedy that. Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash is somewhat similar, but in a book form. - I've never read better space operas than the ones written by Iain M. Banks. Do yourself a favor and never, ever touch Consider Phlebas and Against a Dark Background. Use of Weapons is probably the best, but I've also enjoyed Excession, Look to Windward and The Player of Games. - M. John Harrison's Light was a pretty unique and quite enjoyable experience for me. A touch on the bleak side, maybe, but it's a fairly well-crafted story, and oh my god space battles finally ending in nanoseconds, how long have I been waiting for that? I'll update the list as soon as anything particularly interesting jumps to my mind.

Mmm... nope. Both classes can use any armor, and wizards automatically get Arcane Veil and likely more defensive abilities down the line, so I wouldn't exactly call them weak (as in 'defenseless'). Furthermore, druids can't use equipment while spiritshifted, so that armor advantage you spoke of (which, I repeat, was nonexistent to begin with) presumably disappears, too. You also have to consider the broader repertoire of spells a wizard has access to, and the fact that their preferred skills are (well, seem to me) more useful. All in all, I'm fairly sure my first character will be a wizard.

Thinking Of Running A Pathfinder Game
aluminiumtrioxid replied to Ffordesoon's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
Depends on the modules, I guess. And time concerns. Always wanted to give Pathfinder a try. -
Because you hate everything Star Wars stands for?

I liked ME3 and hated ME2. I also liked DA2 and hated DAO. What the hell is wrong with me?

Skimmed over the newest iteration of Vampire. It's pretty awesome thus far.

Would any of you be interested in...
aluminiumtrioxid replied to aluminiumtrioxid's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
Erm... guys... I'd greatly appreciate if those who promised to attend would finally show up, or at least grace me with a "sorry, change of plans, can't play" message. -
Since when was being a scientist ever about taking pride in ignorance? I mean... really? Is this your argument? "I have a degree in an unspecified science, therefore I am permitted to be as ignorant about every other facets of the body of the collective human knowledge as it is possible, and also be proud of it"? On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog, etc. Also, you have no way to verify whether the person in question has any actual credentials, which is kinda important, I think. And I never mentioned "Malcador is an evil, evil person and my words were exclusively about him, and him alone"

I love how people who presumably never took a gender studies course, or spoke to actual feminists (reading reddit threads does not count) are so quick to denounce an entire intellectual movement they know nothing about. Kinda like the people who don't believe in evolution because they lack the scientific background to even understand what it is about. (Low blow? Yes. Also true.)

Yessss. Yeeeeeesssss! (Seriously, Advanced Hackmaster is a strong contender for "best iteration of D&D, ever", along with DCC and (by the beta maybe) Next.)
