Speaking of the South.... The Number 1 Most Overrated Band of All Time is: Lynyrd Skynyrd God, I hate Lynyrd Skynyrd.
-
"Sticky Fingers" and "Let it Bleed" are my favorites, although "Exile on Main Street" is the (professional) critic's choice. Bands start out unknown, get a following, then get some press, maybe get the hype, then occasionally become overrated media darlings. Do I think the Arcade Fire's album is good? Yes, it's very good. Do I think the indie-rock press is justified in naming it the best thing since sliced bread? No. Same goes for you, Connor Oberst. However, I think a lot of "underrated" bands truly deserve their lack of critical praise and platinum records. Nobody knows about them, because they suck. Or they haven't "sold out." Take your pick.

Bob Dylan - Love Minus Zero/No Limit my love, she speaks like silence without ideals or violence she doesn't have to say she's faithful but she's true like ice, like fire people carry roses make promises my the hour my love, she does not bother she knows too much to argue or to judge

LW: Everybody's got opinions about what's good and what's not. Me, I'm gonna turn into a old hermit who'll reminisce about the "glory days" of rock with rose-colored glasses. Was it really that much better? My judgement is suspect, because I was there and I was INTO it. Of course I'm gonna say it was better, because it was mine. Just like old hippies or punks telling new hippies or punks they had to be hardcore back in THEIR day, not like today... Also, I've found as I've grown up, my enthusiasm for the heavy stuff has seriously waned. Maybe if I were younger, I'd be into Disturbed or Seether.... but it really doesn't interest me now. Even when Godsmack was getting big and I was still listening to mainstream rock, I thought they were a terrible Alice in Chains rip-off. Although Voodoo was kinda cool... It's cool that your mom was a rocker... was she in Fleetwood Mac? And Tom Petty is a legend, man, we can agree on that. Oh yeah, a song... Wilco - Heavy Metal Drummer I miss the innocence I've known playing KISS covers beautiful and stoned

Hold on... at least hair metal bands had prominent guitar solos (sometimes several of them). It was still a subgenre of "metal" after all, wasn't it? Today's modern rock scene features extremely bland power chord progressions and angsty sophomoric lyrics that just bore me to tears. AND NO SOLOS! Clear Channel's busy telling them "Keep it to 3:30, no time for guitar theatrics." I would take Motley Crue or Def Leppard anyday over the grunge leftovers populating the radio these days. At least Poison knew how to have "nothin' but a good time." It was shallow pop, but it was definitely big guitar music. And another note on "the grunge scene:" There were some seriously skilled guitarists in those bands, most notably Kim Thayil and Jerry Cantrell. Those guys were drawing their inspiration from Zeppelin and Sabbath. Who are today's modern rock bands drawing from? Because it seems to me they're dragging the breath out of a style of music that was once "screaming life." Oh yeah, and since I'm waxing nostalgic: Soundgarden - Slaves and Bulldozers

What's the internet? But seriously, I don't buy music off the net. I don't know what programs are good or bad these days, but I do know that Audiogalaxy (R.I.P.) was the greatest music download site back in the day. You could find the most obscure stuff on there and at good speeds too. I would stay away from iTunes. Use a service that gives you honest-to-God mp3s, not some proprietary crap you need five codecs to play in winamp. Many mp3 players don't play the various weird file types some programs create, so that's something else to consider. I also don't trust windows media player, because it has the annoying habit of rearranging your "My Music" folder, retitling all your songs and putting them in different folders. Damn independent computers.

Hmmm... odd theme the "resurrected" lyrics thread has taken... I'll follow suit. Toadies - Possum Kingdom Make up your mind Decide to walk with me Around the lake tonight Around the lake tonight By my side By my side I'm not gonna lie I'll not be a gentleman Behind the boathouse I'll show you my dark secret I'm not gonna lie I want you for mine My blushing bride My lover, be my lover, yeah... Don't be afraid I didn't mean to scare you So help me, Jesus I can promise you You'll stay as beautiful With dark hair And soft skin...forever Forever Make up your mind Make up your mind And I'll promise you I will treat you well My sweet angel So help me, Jesus Give it up to me Give it up to me Do you wanna be My angel? Give it up to me Give it up to me Do you wanna be My angel? Give it up to me! Give it up to me! Do you wanna be My angel? So help me! Be my angel Be my angel Be my angel Do you wanna die? Do you wanna die? Do you wanna die? Do you wanna die? Do you wanna die? Do you wanna die? Do you wanna die? Do you wanna die? I promise you I will treat you well My sweet angel So help me, Jesus Jesus Jesus Jesus...

It reminds me of that classic Family Guy (paraphrased from memory) where Chris wanted to quit the Scouts or something. Peter: You can't quit! Imagine what would have happened if Kurt Cobain had quit! :cut to stage, end of show: Kurt: Thanks everybody, you were great! Remember to buy our new album, and don't do drugs! Reporter: Kurt, what a great show! How's the plans for the 12th album coming? Kurt: Oh they're great, by the way, have you met my wife, Courtney? Reporter: Who? Courtney Love: (murderous glare at her famous rockstar husband)

Baley, you might be interested to know I saw the Melvins perform last year as part of a three-band Ipecac Records show in Cleveland. Dalek opened (and sucked mightily) and Tomahawk simply killed as headliners. So between seeing those two bands, I can pretty much say I've seen Fantomas, too. Although I suppose I would have needed to see an old Slayer show as well to complete the lineup. Joe Satriani - Crystal Planet

Yeah, I bet a lot of people were pretty mad when Bio made Jade Empire Xbox-exclusive. I didn't care too much, 'cause I have one, heh heh. I mean, at least the KOTOR games came out on PC later. But Xbox-exclusive? That's gotta hurt. Still, I shouldn't be smug, because I won't be buying any next-gen consoles until the price hits $200 or lower. Hopefully they'll be that cheap by the time a must-play game *cough*KOTOR 3*cough* comes out for next-gen only. And no I don't consider Oblivion "must-play." I just can't brush aside how boring Morrowind was that easily.

Apocalyptica is good stuff. I especially like their version of Faith No More's "From Out of Nowhere." Some songs just lend themselves well to strings. Cracker - Big Dipper

One of my favorites from that album.

Second playthrough of BG2. I'm kinda bummed because I think I screwed up my stronghold. I'm playing fighter/thief this time around, and I cleared Nalia's keep of trolls before I finished proving Mae'Var's treachery. So although Bloodscalp promised me my own guildhall, that sneaky bastard welched and just gave me some gear and cash instead. And I guess the keep is my stronghold now. I was looking forward to having my own guildhall, too. Are there any thief-related quests associated with your stronghold, like the paladin quests?

Thanks, just checked it out. I'll have to look for his stuff at the library next time I'm there. The jazz head at work let me borrow a Steve Coleman and Five Elements CD last week. I'm liking it a lot so far. I don't know where he falls in the jazz heirarchy, but it seems good to me.

Leave Ringo out of this! Yes, they have been beating a dead horse for their last few albums, but RIP was great stuff! It was the apex of their creativity (their MOP, if you will). The riffs were fresh, the solos were ripping and Nick Menza was still in the band. And the only McLean I know is the guy who wrote "American Pie" and "Vincent." Care to enlighten? Edit: Nevermind. He was a "pillar of the jazz community," I guess. Played with Mingus and Miles Davis among others. I think I've heard some of the albums he's played on, but I didn't know who he was.

You know, I almost wrote "With the exception of Master of Puppets," being as that's the consensus opinion and then I thought to myself, "No, I really believe Rust in Peace is better." Oh, and hello.
-
They never die! I always thought Youthanasia was sort of treading water for them. However, I recently picked up the remastered version of Rust in Peace and it blew me away. I had that sucker on tape back in the day, and lemme tell ya, they cleaned it up good. I don't know why Dave is so bitter. Rust in Peace is better than any CD Metallica released. :waits for Jaymez and Larz to hunt me down:
