  1. What happened to the "Hoff" thread? I was just about to defend the honor of his Highness, the great Chuck Norris...
  2. That's not a fault of the music though. It's just meant to gather to a different taste... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Clarification: It bugs me when I'm not catching everything in a song/piece. That's my failing, not the music's. It's great that people make complex music that you can't just pump your fist to, that's fantastic. I'm talking about not noticing a counter melody until the tenth time you listen to a piece, that sort of thing. You'd catch it if you were concentrating, which sometimes I'm in the mood for, sometimes I'm not.
  3. The big difference that I see between jazz and blues is that blues is more predictable. That said, there must be something compelling about a genre that recycles the same chord progression so much, yet still exists and is popular. The best examples of the genre are generally the people who really do have the blues. How bummed can Eric Clapton be about anything anymore? That's why I don't listen to any Clapton CDs, post-"Unplugged." Which was fantastic, by the way, and the best example of acoustic blues I've heard in the last ten years. My jazz experience is not extensive. I have a few Miles Davis albums and Coltrane's "A Love Supreme," and that's about it. My personal preference is early Miles over later Miles. I can feel the visceral impact "Bitches Brew" had and I can understand *why* it was groundbreaking and important, but if I want to listen to jazz, it's usually because I want to relax. And that's very difficult while listening to music that's so challenging. I find that when I listen to classical or jazz music, I have to give it my full attention, or I miss things. Which bugs me.
  4. ^ I was in downtown Boise, Idaho, and I saw a duck, and I knew the duck was lost, 'cause ducks ain't s'posed to be downtown. There's nothin' for 'em there. So I went to a Subway sandwich shop, I said, "Let me have a bun." But she wouldn't sell me just the bun, she said that I had to have something on it. She told me it's against regulations for Subway to sell just the bun. I guess the two halves ain't supposed to touch. So I said, "Alright, well, put some lettuce on it," which she did. She said, "That'll be $1.75." I said, "It's for a duck." And they said, "All right, well, then it's free." See, I did not know that. Ducks eat for free at Subway! Had I known that, I would have ordered a much larger sandwich. "Let me have the Steak Fajita Sub - but don't bother ringing it up, it's for a duck! There are six ducks out there, and they all want Sun Chips!"
  5. I'm listening to Mitch Hedberg's stand-up comedy CD, "Strategic Grill Locations." I'm not good at golf, I never got a hole-in-one ... but I *did* hit a guy - And that's way more satisfying. You're supposed to yell "fore," but I was too busy mumbling, "Ain't no way that's gonna hit him."
  6. Matthew Sweet - Thought I Knew You
  7. Steve Earle - John Walker's Blues He got in a lot of trouble for writing this one, but Steve Earle is used to trouble. It's a story written from the point of view of the American who joined the Taliban. I'm just an American boy Raised on MTV I seen all the kids in the soda pop ads And none of 'em looked like me So I started lookin' around for a light out of the dim And the first thing I heard that made sense was the word Of Mohammed, peace be upon him
  8. I don't have their latest album, but Girls Can Tell is pretty good. They use a lot of bass and keyboards added to simple drumbeats to anchor their songs with a lot of rhythm. It's solid indie-rock with a jazzy feel. Cool songs. BTW All Outta Angst is one of my favorite NOFX songs. No steppin' out 'til Spring Ya know it's difficult to sing When it's 23 below (and that's during the day) I'm not insane! Oh yeah, Twilight Singers - Feathers
  9. Spoon - Everything Hits At Once So smooooooth.
  10. One day I hope to go to a medieval faire. But for now, I wish you and your wife a hearty "Congratulations!"
  11. The Clash - Charlie Don't Surf
  12. You're damn right it is! Frank Black w/ Teenage Fanclub - Sister Isabel I tracked this one down... it's was originally done by Del Shannon, the rocker who brought us Runaway and Hats Off to Larry! I can still remember The night she said goodbye She said we'd meet again someday in a castle in the sky The choir has stopped singing I no longer hear the bells She changed her name from Laura to Sister Isabel
  13. Steve Goodman is a great singer-songwriter... got into him through that song he did with John Prine, "Souvenirs." Guy knew how to write a great country song. Well, I'll stick around as long as you will let me You know I never minded standing in the rain You don't have to call me "Darlin," darlin, But you never even call me by my name
  14. Neil Young - 'Til the Morning Comes Bob Dylan w/ Johnny Cash - Girl of the North Country Jello Biafra and Life After Life - Still is Still Moving to Me (Willie Nelson cover)
  15. Haha, yeah it's a "platinum hit" for Xbox too, which means it's down to $20. My g/f bought it for me a week or so ago and we played it on co-op for a few hours. She liked it as much as I did, which is rare, 'cause she's not much of a gamer. Just shows the universal appeal of these games. I can't wait to see Lego Luke training on Degobah.
  16. I'm sick of lawyers, sick of forensics and sick of "regular guy" sitcoms. So I don't watch much TV. But I did enjoy Seinfeld, Cheers and Frasier back in the day. I have a feeling I would like Lost and 24 if I could find the time to watch all the back episodes (I'm not one for jumping in mid-season). AND I have recently been hooked by Buffy, as many folks here have. I'm midway through the third season now, and I'm enjoying it immensely. It's escapism, pure and simple. Same reason I play video games. If I want to learn something, I'll read a newpaper or watch a documentary. If I want a fun show with fun characters, I'll watch Buffy or one of the following shows: Family Guy Aqua Teen Hunger Force Sealab 2021 (although I haven't seen any Adult Swim in about 6 months) Fawlty Towers MST3000 Oh yeah, and because no one has mentioned it: THE CRITIC
  17. Normal or "dub" version? Because 'dere never gonna be enough space So eat the meek Savor the taste Right now: Matthew Sweet - So Far
  18. Jordan Zevon - Studebaker
  19. Oh yeah, still playing Jade Empire and Lego Star Wars. Which one depends on if I feel like reading or not.
  20. On the topic of Morrowind: My Morrowind experience went like this: Installed, took my time creating a character and talking to everyone in the town. Found an axe and killed some little creatures by the beach. Yay. Walked out of town and into a cave of sorts, and swung my axe at some baddie a bunch of times (hardly ever making contact, even though it was right in front of me). Usually died there, so I reloaded and walked around some more before deciding never to play the game again.
  21. Thin Lizzy - Dancing in the Moonlight Now we go steady to the pictures I always get chocolate stains on my pants My father, he
  22. It was like the ultimate demo! In all the old FPS games the shareware was usually a third of the full game. The first of three "episodes," that type of thing. Also, shareware used the finished version of the game. I think today's demos do that, but I don't know for sure. P.S. I actually forgot what thread this was while I was writing that. I thought somebody must have started a thread about demo length and I was posting in it. Weeeird.
  23. I got a LOT of hours out of the Doom, Quake and Duke Nukem 3D shareware.
  24. The Xbox has been busy lately: Jade Empire and LEGO STAR WARS!
  25. I used to go to various singing performances back in college because my girlfriend was in the choir. Many were boring, but occasionally they really hit upon something fantastic. Like when the men's "elite" group did an acappella version of Toto's "Africa." It was so beautiful I almost cried. :'( I'd stop the raaaaaains down in Afffffffricaaaaaaaaaa
