BREAKING NEWS: NEW DRAGON AGE GOTY TRAILER
Purkake replied to Llyranor's topic in Computer and Console
Funnily enough, my quick sampling suggests that Volo has the best grip in reality out of all of us. While one suspects it, it's always surprising to see so many people jump out of the undergrowth to scream their delight at this kind of trailer. It probably did have a positive net effect for Bio in terms of sales and audience sizes (if not for other markers). I'm sure operas would also sell more tickets(or at least grab a different audience) if they advertised with action movie style posters featuring hot chicks and blood-drenched space marines. Should we always dilute everything down to the lowest common denominator? -
I got used to the un-safeness pretty fast. I have in-ear earbuds that are really comfortable and block most of the outside noise, but I can still easily hear louder stuff like car horn and bicycle bells. I don't really feel deaf or in danger. If you use the over-the-ear style headphones, you'll have no trouble hearing stuff, unless you are listening to something really loud.

They are way more cautious about bugs and stuff these days. Also games have become way more complicated, everything has to work perfectly. If there is one thing in games that hasn't advanced at all, it's the AI. The last game that had some interesting AI improvements in terms of enemies was FEAR 1 IIRC. It just takes too much work and doesn't really show much, I guess. Oblivion's "revolutionary" Radiant AI was a complete failure, Stalker's great ecosystem AI was just dogs running across the road in a loop. It's one fail after another these days.

That sounds like a QA nightmare. The only way to make it fun/useful though...

Please don't. Garret isn't some monkey. I say keep the rope-arrows in so that the player has to wage/think a little bit, but get that stupid wall climbing out. This isn't some friggin' Tomb Raider. If Garret could climb anywhere, there wouldn't be the certain feel of being vulnerable and exposed to guards anymore. He's physically no super man. On a good day you'll get special (glowing neon pink) places where you can use your rope arrows and other special places (neon green) where you can climb up and down. Gotta make sure those blind console people don't miss them...

I hope you're right... But they did make a big glowing logo for it on the http://www.thief4.com site. I'm not saying that the game will suck, but Thi4f sounds like April fool's.

What have I done? I have brought boredom and despair on an office-ful of innocent people, I am become boredom. EDIT: Don't blame me if they start a riot and you end up with a stapler through your hand.
 -
Yay! I don't really like the naming stuff taking a dive and going back to the 80s, though. For now Thief 4 shall be known as ThiAf for me. Their PR/marketing department must be either dead or staffed with blind monkeys. Was Th4ef taken? What the hell is wrong with Thief 4 or Thief IV?

Maybe you are such an oppressive boss that they have no choice but to hide in their own little worlds just to stave off the thoughts of suicide by stapler? j/k I guess it depends on the work environment and the people. Sometimes you just don't want to get to know the people, but that's for a temp job or if the people are really annoying. If my choices are listening to some cool book/podcast/music or listening to a bunch of annoying middle-aged people gossip about co-workers or talk about "today's youth" then the choice is simple.

It's one of the few games that I bought back then when it came out. It was like 30 Euros. I guess I liked the cover and wasn't plugged into the evil internet hivemind. -
No, it's bloody rude when people keep interrupting you every five minutes while you are trying to get some freakin' work done. There is a time and a place to socialize with coworkers and that is not at my desk when I'm in the middle of something else. You miss my point. I am in a position to ask these people to do things for me. Being an inordinately nice person I always ask politely, usually pointing out what I need done and asking their advice as and when necessary. Without putting too fine a point on it, these guys are effectively subordinate to me and in twenty years time will be in the same boat I am currently sat in. The brighter ones understand this and, ergo, do not sit there listening to Evanesence, very loudly, whilst I ask for certain tasks to be performed. So, is it too much to ask that I don't have to perform human semaphore / nudge them / etc to get their attention? These people are commonly known in management circles as 'Generation Y.' I am aware of their mores. I am not an ass. In fact, I understand the cultural memes and ironic T-shirts they enjoy more than any other Old Guy in the joint. This is why I EXPECT THEM NOT TO PLUG INTO AN ALTERNATIVE FRICKI' REALITY when I'm working with them. That is all. MC Have you tried flogging or hauling them under the keel? If it's a problem why not just ban earphones during work hours?

I didn't have any problems. You can also use a gamepad if you want, but you'll need something to make the gamepad keys correspond to keyboard buttons, the game doesn't automatically detect most gamepads. Also, it's dirt cheap, they were giving it away with cheese(yes cheese) in Canada and you can get it on Steam and Good Old Games. -
Didn't you hear Richard? He saw them all die...

The faces in UE3 games tend to look very sweaty/glistening. Only if the artists get it wrong. I think the shiny effect is a default in the engine and the smarter designers turn it off. It does come up surprisingly ofter, though. Most of the splicers in Bioshock look like they're made of shiny Play-Doh, same for the dogs in Silent Hill: Homecoming. -

Unless you have a severe aversion to keyboard and mouse, it's awesome. -

Yes, we need more oil-dipped faces and no anti-aliasing... -

BREAKING NEWS: NEW DRAGON AGE GOTY TRAILER
Purkake replied to Llyranor's topic in Computer and Console
It seemed like a pretty typical trailer to me. They showed some NPCs giving speeches, *some* combat (they've been showing off the mass battle scene in almost every official trailer anyway), some NPC interaction. Calling it a "violence" trailer doesn't change the actual content, which is nothing out of the ordinary for game trailers. They did push the point by having a special-made bloody EA logo and ending it with a dragon-like blood splatter. As for an interesting trailer I always liked the Dead Space "lullaby" trailer, too bad the game was a 12-hour snorefest... Dead Space was a fine action game. Just not a good horror one. And I believe you can hear the lullaby in the bridge elevator. Yeah, it would have been just as good if it had been half as long. I was just saying that the trailer really sold me on the game. It's haunting and atmospheric instead of looking like a b-grade action flick. -

My problem is the apparent need to have a "violence" trailer. Did Mass Effect have a violence trailer? It didn't even have a lot (any?) blood and it sold well. This makes Bioware look desperate. -
I find that listening to podcasts/audiobooks is way more entertaining than music. The downside is that they require concentration, so you can't really do any concentration-requiring work.

The trick is to know nothing about the characters/story. For me it was just a bunch of dudes/chicks saying LotR stuff. Ignorance FTW! -

The important question is can you choose the half-naked demon chick instead of the ugly one.
