  1. Volo please try to be serious, did you read the article ?
  2. Upset ??? You should be celebrating
  3. Bruce, by Philly Steak Roll are you referring to a Philly Cheesesteak? If you ever get to Philadelphia, you should try Pat's or Geno's. They're located near the Italian Market in Philadelphia (which also has great shopping). I prefer Pat's, but Geno's has a large following as well. Sounds like you had a great day! Squeakymeister "waves" Yeah that's what we call it in South Africa, thx for the tip about Philadelphia I love Philly Cheesesteak, very yummy. I had my first one about 5 years in Atlanta airport on our way to a technical symposium in Las Vegas
  4. I can't believe you really think that
  5. Pretty much this. I agree, for me this is one of the numerous insights he makes
  6. http://midnightresistance.co.uk/articles/****ty-toys Guys please read this article that discusses several pertinent issues that we often raise like the privilege that white, straight males have in modern society, there influence in gaming, the definition of censorship and also how games should be more inclusive. But its not a guilt trip, I think the author makes some cogent and thought- provoking points. Don't get put off by the first paragraph, the journalist offers some real insights I don't agree with everything he says but most of it makes sense, what do you think?
  7. Went to a Farmers Flea Market today which is basically a collection of delicious food stalls. That's one of the many perks about living in a big city. Flea markets and outdoor events are a big deal, there are a variety of them and they are always well supported. I ate Greek pastries and a Philly Steak Roll. I also bought some Gorgonzola cheese, exotic jams ( to have with the cheese later) and some scrumptious Cabanossi So it was a successful trip
  8. Its a big game. No doubt about that and Mexico have the confidence of being underdogs but I still believe Netherlands will win
  9. You agreed trolling is not always malicious in the trolling tread in WoT. So please don't make stuff up. However, your intent was to have fun at my expense by bringing in a contentious topic that has no relevance to this thread. Yes, you're trolling and it's not appreciated by myself and by a lot of people on this board. Ah but you are misunderstanding something, my intention with my post was just to make you laugh. True trolling is where you just want to upset someone. That's not what I am doing
  10. I'm sorry, please don't go And I'm not trolling, I'm having some fun at your expense. There is a difference, the former is malicious and the latter is not
  11. It might impact how you play the character and how you respond to events if you know your character's background, personality and beliefs. Mostly for the ultra RP centered folks. I guess it is a couple of things: 1) LARPing: You like to roleplay? You like to immerse yourself? Then a character biography is a great tool and help to achieve this. 2) It's fun to write your own character, or use a character you've played with in another game and then insert them into this new world. 3) Gives a sense of purpose to the character. Why is this specific character in this world and who is he/she? 4) It gives the Player "control" over their own character (most modern games use "vanity" as a way to give the player control over their characters. Appearance, name, clothes etc.) Good ideas Osvir I like the concept of creating a realistic background based on actual lore and historical context within the framework of the game. So during character creation, as you mentioned, you would need some pointers as this is a new IP and we don't know enough about the game world to necessarily make the right decisions about where we are from and what this means Also as Death Machine mentioned this will help shape certain decisions if you adhere to a RP principle but I don't think this would only apply to hardcore RP. For example I don't consider myself a hardcore RP but I always make decisions in a RPG based on the ethos of my character. For example I generally play a Chaotic Good type personality who believes in doing the right thing but also considers the financial benefit to quests and decisions
  12. LARPing while playing video games may be going a little too far for me. I don't think that's true about you Hiro Look how supportive you are when it comes to Romance in RPG and that involves RP within the game as the relationship is a virtual one?
  13. Tough calls but I think its a good idea for us to start predicting who will be winning in the remaining games and the score We can have a friendly competition to see who gets the most right Netherlands vs Mexico : 2-1 Costa Rica vs Greece: 1-1 ( penalty shoot-outs will decide the game, but I'm betting on Greece)
  14. Penalty kicks must be a terrible way to decide the fate of a game..but I suppose you have to have a victor
  15. Wow dude, I wasn't expecting such honest negativity. I have just bought the first 2 games in this series and I was looking forward to playing them but now you have almost put me right off. I shouldn't have asked, my bad
  16. Not sure why you find this funny? My take on this is simple, they are changing Dreamfall from one game into 5 small games and releasing them sequentially. They are doing this as the larger game was taking too long and now they can focus on the each small game individually. But original backers still all 5 games for free. Where is the joke I'm missing?
  17. Quite a crass depiction of my point. You chauvinistically assume all women do not wish to explore themes of sexism inherent to feudal societies and you naively believe people only play as their own sex. Anyways I too am tired of this argument (for tonight at least) and am going to bed. To be fair Gromnir he isn't saying that actually no, he ain't. we offered alternatives earlier. sexism as a theme can be explored quite easily without subjecting those who has been historical victims o' misogyny to simulated misogyny. he wants realism. you said: This brings me to my next question, what is the reason you are asking for this? Is it purely because you want a realistic game that captures the real themes of the feudal system? he said More or less. It was part of the structure hence I'd rather explore it rather than ignore it. Outside of that it's also because I'm a feminist and I find the history gender inequality and its structural manifestations interesting and worthy of examination. HA! Good Fun! I know it may seem that he his contradicting himself but I don't think he is. He is a feminist and but wants a realistic feudal themed game. Sexism was part of the feudal system but just because he is asking for that it doesn't mean he is supporting it. These types of issues raise awareness we ain't saying he is aware o' what he is doing. that is what makes it kinda sad. is so few places in real life that women gets treated complete equal, so why subject 'em to misogyny in a fantasy game? 'cause is maybe realistic in a Fantasy feudal setting? 'cause somebody has a social agenda that they is promoting? fallout were set in an alternative future reimagined from 1950s Americana. http://www.history.com/topics/black-history/civil-rights-movement woulda' been a very different game. would it have been a better game? heck, as opposed to racism, sexism coulda' been just as easily a major theme o' fallout. you honestly think that fallout woulda been better if players who choose an african american or female avatar woulda' gotten "special" treatments more in line with 1950s America? and even if you genuine were thinking that game woulda' been better that way, do you really think that adding such woulda' been fair to female and african american gamers? some might appreciate the honest portrayal, but you think lack o' choice would have gone over well? do you think such disparate treatment woulda' gained some negative attention for fallout in press and elsewhere? to make fallout and not have race be a central issue actual took effort. ask self why the developer/publisher chose that route. HA! Good Fun! You make some good points in this post, I agree with most of them.

These types of issues raise awareness But end of the day I agree with you that you could raise the fact of sexism, or other SJ issues, without emulating the exact historical context in the game. In fact I would prefer a different way of raising these types of issues than the historical way
  19. Quite a crass depiction of my point. You chauvinistically assume all women do not wish to explore themes of sexism inherent to feudal societies and you naively believe people only play as their own sex. Anyways I too am tired of this argument (for tonight at least) and am going to bed. To be fair Gromnir he isn't saying that You could use a game to raise awareness of a SJ issue and it could also be realistic. For example the movie "12 years as a slave " was all about slavery but you left that movie with the reinforced fact of how appalling slavery was. So you can use various mediums to raise awareness which is a good thing I just think a game isn't the best way to do it because of the gaming culture and how people interpret things , but I may be wrong
  20. Yaaaaaaay, Stun did you know I love discussing Romance ?
  21. I fear my main point is missed because we can't get past this. Yes, it is not Earth however the primary races are still incredibly human and the structures in place are still clearly analogous to already existing historical structures (i.e. slave societies, feudal societies). The impact of souls, the length of elven lives and the possible existence of gods obviously would have an impact on how these structures develop and persist (hence why I'm merely voicing my critique as a potential problem [see first post]) however so far they still seem to be largely similar. They have a level of technology comparable to 15th/16th century Europe; this would mean we are coming towards the decline of feudalism. Naturally this would still mean the society would be in close contact with many of its holdovers. More or less. It was part of the structure hence I'd rather explore it rather than ignore it. Outside of that it's also because I'm a feminist and I find the history gender inequality and its structural manifestations interesting and worthy of examination. Okay thanks for explaining. I am also a feminist and take issues of social justice seriously so for me if we can raise issues of SJ through gaming then I would support that But I understand your primary reason for wanting this is for realism. So for me the question is really does a person want a realistic game that does follow the avenue of feudal realism? Apart from the fact this represents realism it may even raise awareness and help causes like feminism My experience has been it even if it depicts realism it will receive more misplaced criticism because I don't think any software company can depict issues like feudal misogyny in way that will be seen as being overall positive to the cause of sexism. In other words people will misunderstand the intention and you will have other feminists criticizing Obsidian for portraying women in a demeaning way ( or other minority groups ). I just don't think its worth the possible negative publicity I hope I am making sense
  22. Oh don't worry I'm not suspecting malice on your end or anything. More or less. Misogyny and patriarchy were an inherent part of the feudal structure and rather then merely sweeping that under the rug I'd rather actually explore those themes (along with all of the other similar themes mentioned by Obsidian). Okay that's what I thought you were asking, sometimes I do misunderstand what people are asking. This brings me to my next question, what is the reason you are asking for this? Is it purely because you want a realistic game that captures the real themes of the feudal system do you want to raise awareness of these types of SJ issues so at the end of the game you may have some people who think "wow sexism was bad in those days, I am glad I am opposed to it nowadays ( this is just a simplified example ) Another reason I am not aware of
  23. I honestly don't even know what you are trying to say here meaning you have no doubt missed my point as well (as I have missed yours). I don't think I am misunderstanding you, but I want to understand exactly what you are asking for and why. I am not trying to catch you out, I asking for clarity. You want Obsidian to explore themes like misogyny and racism that existed in the feudal in the interests of realism, is that not what you are suggesting?
  24. To actually show how such sexism was inherent to the system, how it manifested itself, how it impacted people and so on (same reason they'd be exploring class conflict and institutionalises racism). Crass depictions of sexism that merely show "sexism is bad" without exploring how it actually manifests and what its material causes are is why many will wrongfully believe sexism has already ended. . I want to focus on your primary objective with this type of game design. We know the feudal system was sexist and had an inimical impact to various groups. Most of us believe and recognise many modern social justice issues that are inherent in our society, like the fact that sexism and racism is still relevant and prevalent and we understand the reasons So I want you to give me an example in PoE of a society or town that would be designed that is going to educate or benefit the cause of understanding, for example, sexism that we don't already know or need to be presented with. Because I just see this type of game design raising more negative attention than being informative. I am battling with seeing the benefit?
  25. How about a tribe of brutal lesbian, African American women who enslave and humiliate other racial groups but particularly white males in PoE? That would be an interesting dynamic if people want to be reminded of bigotry
