I remember when I had a C64 (actually a C128..) and I ordered my games from this place where they "ranked" the games by how many floppy discs they came on.. At the top of the list was Pool of Radiance with 8 floppy discs. Somehow, I figured the more discs needed, the better the game had to be. Anyhow, I ordered that game and immediately fell in love with the RPG genre. I may have played other RPG's before that game, but either I didn't understand them or they've all just slipped my mind.

Gamer's Hell recently posted a Dungeon Lords interview that I thought gave a good view of how the game will end up. It's short and sweet too! http://www.gamershell.com/articles/882.html

I was pretty surprised at the amount of foul language used in the interview. I thought of quoting parts of the interview here, to see what the ****block-filter would do to it, but apparently I was too lazy. Damn my laziness!!

Also, when fighting a friendly humanoid in Gothic/Gothic 2 you have a choice if you want to just beat that person up or actually kill him. The fight ends when your opponent (or you!) have 0 hp, and then you can decide whether to perform the killing blow or just walk away. It works well, and there's even a scroll you can purchase that wipes the memory of the person you just fought, so it's possible to beat them unconscious, steal all their money and possesions, erase their memory with the scroll, and still be friends with them when they wake up

Is there some kind of unofficial rule book for how game companies must act around their new titles? It seems like every game company board I'm on, every company acts the same. First complete silence, even around their most faithful fans. Then the official announcement, always on another forum than their own boards. Then follows a period of hype (and perhaps a few new threads on their own boards) and useless pseudo-information, before the game is released. Break the mold, Obsidian! Open up the third project forum now!

I'm just pissed that he loves norwegian girls.. What the hell?! Swedish girls are much better!!

This is not entirely true. It is possible to gain those much needed first levels just by questing in-town, where you don't have to kill anything. I don't remember the exact number, but I think someone claimed to have reached level 5 or 6 just by solving every low level (yes, FedEx-quests) quest in Khorinis. The quests get better the further you get into the game. My personal favourite is the drinking contest.. It was a bit tricky to figure out

I actually prefer the rather simplistic style of character development in Gothic/Gothic 2. Some games have me calculating stats, distributing points and choosing skills ad nauseum. Gothic/Gothic 2 didn't have the perfect system by any means, but at least it let me concentrate on the gameplay more than anything else. Of course, a few more fighting skills wouldn't have hurt..

I think you have deer mixed up with moose or elk. A deer is about 1 meter high (3 feet) and can weigh up to 100 kg (222 lbs) in extreme cases, but normally around 50-70 kg (111-155 lbs). Deer are also very shy creatures who run away at the slightest provcation. A moose average weight is 1200 lbs, and there has been a reported case of a 1800 lbs moose once! Also, moose are very aggressive creatures during mating season. One little known fact is that the moose is actually the animal responsible for the most human deaths per year in Canada.. Ps. Yes, I have seen both deer and moose. We have deer at my grandmother's house every winter, and the hunting tradition is very strong in our family.

Do you have any facts to back this statement with, or is it just another Volourn lie ©?

Huuuuuuuuuuge worlds are up there right next to physics when it comes to dumb features in games. No developer has enough resources to populate such big world in any sort of sensible manner, so in the end all you get is lot of reused graphics that doesn't serve anything, one significant building every 1-2 km and people running everywhere to cut down on travel time... which totally breaks the immersion, hardly a good thing for the RPG. GTA gets away with it because with all the cars, bikes and whatnot it has you don't travel much on foot in it... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Play Gothic/Gothic 2 before you say anything. Ok, they're not huuuge, but they're big worlds filled with details and everything you wish to find in a RPG. Oh, and about GTA.. Well, I kind of hope Obsidians next project has vehicles in it.. Preferrably upgradable vehicles I've always hated the perfectly square, tiny maps of the IE games and Neverwinter Nights. A loading screen every time you enter a one room building, now that's an immersion breaker. "Oh gods no. They don't need a shooter engine for qa CRPG. I rather see them make an original engine designed specifically for a CRPG." This is so.. uninformed it's not even worth a real reply. Just a suggestion: read up on the difference between a graphics engine and a game engine.

The latest games I've received that had full swedish translation are "Harry Potter och f -
Anyone think Obsidian has scraped together enough cash to license the Unreal 3 engine for the graphics..? I want a RPG in a world as seen in GTA: San Andreas: huuuge, no loading times, detailed and pretty. Damn, it's really getting my imagination going, not knowing what they're up to! Let's hope they surprise us this time, with something totally unexpected. Something without magic, elves and swords. Original. Ground-breaking. Unique.

The sick thing is that the engine was never any good to begin with. Why anyone would want to touch it 5 years after it became outdated is beyond me.

Gothic 2 is more of a RPG for me than, for example, Planescape: Torment. Good to see the english demo out! Perhaps this means the english expansion is due out soon? Atari Nordic refuses to give a straight answer.

One thing that always bothers me in almost every CRPG is that at the beginning you'llbe fighting (for example) rats for xp. Then as the game progresses, the enemies become tougher and tougher and you end up fighting dragons. But suddenly, as you enter a new zone, you might be back to fighting rats again, this time 20 levels higher than the first rats! I've mostly seen this phenomenon in online RPG's (fighting level 50 deer in WoW), but also in a lot of single player RPG's. It disturbs me to meet a deer with higher level than my own character.

Kaftan is wrong. Lots of games gets translated to swedish. Especially EA are known to do this, with sports games, movie licenses and their biggest franchises (Harry Potter and so on). Sweden is not that different. The reason not all games get translated is because swedes in general are quite good at english, and the cost of translating a game would be far higher than the extra revenues generated by a swedish version. -
I have a level 59 paladin with less than 100k xp to go for level 60. The game is dying on me, but we'll see once I reach level 60 if there's anything left after that.

Ah.. I understand now. No, Gothic doesn't care if you think it's difficult or not. It will throw everything it has in your face anyhow. It IS possible to run into an orc at level 1. I think you just need to head back to the safety of Bioware or some IE-powered game where the tutorials are as long as the main campaign

Wow.. A third project.. Please, if there is a God, convince Obsidian to make it a post apocalyptic RPG, using the Unreal 3 or Crytek engine (yeah, right..). I haven't played a really good PA-RPG since 1987!
-
You're right. Although I work as a games reviewer, I've only tried.. 80% of them. But I still have to find a MMORPG where your actions influence the world around you in any way. But please, feel free to enlighten us with an example of your own.

Kingdom Hearts is the only game my girlfriend plays regularly on my Playstation 2. I even had to buy her the Brady official strategy guide, because she wants to find absolutely everything in the game..

It's fine if you write it once or twice. But entering every thread on a forum saying the same thing gets old. Try doing a search for Hades posts containing the word Gothic..

If this isn't trolling, then I don't know what is.
