I love them. As long as they're not linear (like Call of Duty, Gears of War, Halo) and as long as they bring something more to the table. Precursors and White Gold are RPG's at heart but combat is pure FPS (and in the case of Precursors, spaceship combat!). Fallout 3 is supposed to be a RPG too, but who knows how that will turn out. Probably a shooter. Mercenaries 2 and Far Cry 2 are pure shooters, but both drop you in a huge sandbox and let you do your thing. Borderlands is supposed to be a shooter version of Diablo, sort of. We'll see. Stalker is also pure shooter, but the atmosphere is so good I don't even think of them as shooters, more like an experience. Rage is supposed to be racing and shooter, but little is known. Alan Wake is supposed to be a psychological thriller-shooter, but again, little is really known. Dead Island is a horror-shooter, with a free-roaming paradise resort to explore. With zombies. RPB is a RPG. But nothing is known about that game yet, not even the name. Alpha Protocol is shooter-RPG. Gothic 4 is RPG (I hope). Gothic 3 expansion will be RPG. GTA4 (FOR PC) is more of an action adventure.. with racing.. or something. I think the red thread is that I vastly prefer first person view (or third person over-the-shoulder view) in my games. Naturally, that view functions best with FPS combat.

By the way, I got a tip to put a lot of points in Fanaticism, which sounded fine at the time. The only problem was that the skill itself didn't open up until I hit level 30. I can do that, I thought, and played like a madman to get to 30 while saving my skill points for that mythical skill. When I finally hit 30, I was eager to spend them.. only to find out I could only spend ONE lousy skill on Fanaticism at level 30! To get to level two in that skill, I have to be level 31. And I assume for level three I need to be level 32.. That means I'll be maxed out by the time I hit LEVEL 50! Screw that, Diablo 2 isn't THAT much fun

Just a heads up on Gamespot's take on Alpha Protocol (unless it has been posted elsewhere already): http://www.gamespot.com/news/blogs/preview...e;picks;title;2 I wonder how free the world will be. The article mentions that you won't have a HQ (or hub, as they call it), rather you'll be moving around a lot. Does this mean we can go back to previously visited cities? I am guessing it does. Or hoping. Or both.

Not really. It tells me nothing more than that Halo is more known than Planescape: Torment. I put no other value in the fact, I'm not a share-holder. Close, but not quite. How many people are you? 30? 50? I (and many others) were impressed by Boiling Point (quote from 8/10 review): "Put it like this: This is probably one of the most enjoyable piece of early-Beta code that I've ever played. You want to damn Atari for releasing it like this. However, you also want to hail them for spending money on something of Boiling Point's ambition rather than the safe option. After all, if this sells nothing, the lesson publishers will learn won't be "Don't release unfinished games" but "Don't invest in ambitious ones"." Source: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=59379 They (Deep Shadows) are working on the sequel right now so I'm not sure how much of a failure it was at market. Anyhow, everyone chooses their own path. All I am saying is that I appreciate the wild ambition of Boiling Point much more than the next stale-but-polished Bioware product. A middle-ground would be the best way to go, in my opinion. Aim high instead of playing it safe, just don't go insane with features. I believe you need to take risks to win big. Oh, and if a team of 13 can produce Boiling Point, I'm sure a team of 50 can make "a 6,000 hour long game with trillions of moving parts", no problem.

OK, played through the first level of Crysis.. I only used 1280x1024 (my monitor likes that resolution) but with everything on max, 4x antialiasing and not a single stutter anywhere! It's pretty powerful! Huge leap forward from my X1950XTX at least. Maybe I should try Crysis with 8x antialiasing? :D

Ok, I am now a proud owner of a Sapphire Radeon HD 4870. Just a warning: it is NOT silent! It's pretty quiet when idle, but when you start up the computer, the GPU fan threatens you with a sound worse than a vacuum cleaner. I've only tried a few games so far and it can handle anything without any slowdowns. Fortunately it doesn't speed up the fan at all, almost, when playing. Going to try Crysis now.

Alpha Protocol Feature on Gameplayer
mkreku replied to Sucks2BU's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Thanks for the heads up! Interesting read, for sure. -
There's a new preview out (some magazine called PSM) and one of the details they've unveiled is going to make the "Oblivion with gunz" crowd very happy: apparently there will be a robotic horse in the game. Uhm, yeah. I am trying to stay positive, but Bethesda are working hard to turn me into one of you annoying whiners.

I'm sure any former members of Troika disagree with that statement. Actually, I think they are the ones that would agree with me. They had the ambition, which clearly showed in the games they were able to make. Unfortunately they bet on the wrong horses and crumbled. I wouldn't blame their downfall on their ambitious goals, rather on their inability to make attractive settings and their marketing skills. It's all speculation though and I'm sure you'll disagree.

It had three rotating slots for the quicksaves. Every time you pressed quicksave, the game overwrote the oldest of the three slots so you always had the three newest quicksaves available. No matter how many stupid things you did, the chances were that one of the quicksaves would be able to bail you out.

One nice effect in Driver: Parallel Lines is the "old TV rasterization" filter and cinematic angle you get when you perform something spectacular. In this shot both me and the police are airborne.. It looked much better in motion.

If you read the last sentence of my previous post, the one you replied to.. here, I'll quote it again: I anticipated the response would go along the lines of prioritization, which is why I provided the above quote. Thirteen people made a game based on their own in-house engine, complete with a huge open-ended world (streaming maps), driveable cars, boats, tanks, helicopters, airplanes etc., running, jumping, swimming, diving, drinking, dancing (!), shooting, sneaking (yes, a working stealth feature!), five different factions (all with their own line of quests!), destructible environments, inventory management, upgradeable weapons, a full-fledged RPG character development system, tons of different weapons, a 20-30 hour main story, anti-aircraft missile systems (!), dialogue trees, hidden bikini babes, cars that you have to fill up with gas and change tires on, binoculars, extended ears (!), 25x25 km of detailed gameworld, gang wars, ambushes (both vehicle and on foot), day-and-night cycle, weather system, one of the most clever quick save systems I've seen and so on and so forth. Boiling Point was a disaster when it came out, with leopards flying above the tree tops and cars disappearing when you turned around. But the sheer ambition shone through even then! When the final 200 MB patch was released, the game became a gem. It's all about ambition, and I, for one, would much rather play the original unpatched Boiling Point than a super-polished Pong.

No, that was DEFINITELY a misquote. How weird! I pressed the Quote+ button in another thread as I was going to comment on the romantic homoerotic bonds across the ocean between a Finn and an American, but I scrapped that post.. and then they appear here with my picture?! They didn't show for me when I posted the pic, that's for sure.

This reminds me; is there a co-op play for Alpha Protocol? We could double team him. Driver: Parallel Lines.. not exactly cutting edge, but it works and it's smooth as hell. Which is kind of vital for a racing game.

I died like a little bitch surely 20 times to the claws of Diablo last night. He shot me with some red beam that was insta-kill for my weakling of a paladin. I finally figured out a tactic to beat him, but damn I was frustrated for a while there. Run from the teleport pad to Diablo, die from first red beam, run back for five minutes, collect corpse, die again from red beam and so on. It turned out it was possible to stay far away from him and let him shoot those red beams as much as he wanted, because sooner or later he always came running for me with some crappy rush attack. That's when I let loose my Zeal on him, ONCE, before I ran away again, out of reach for his lame red beam. It took a while but it worked.

Oh, so THAT's what you're playing now! For a moment there I thought you might have missed the point of the thread and gone trolling instead. I've recently installed Driver: Parallel Lines after randomly happening upon a few positive reader reviews of the game online. The car handling is not near as good as in the GTA games, but otherwise it's actually very similar. Except Driver has better in-vehicle shooting and less side activities to participate in. Also, it's much more race oriented but I felt like playing a little racing games so it fits me fine. It's much better than I remember it to be, although I might have reviewed the PS2 version of it.

What kind of PSU do you have? Maybe it's too weak to supply the bigger GPU's with enough power.

Notice how the Leafs are the only ones not picking up any big names? Well, except Finger of course.. and.. uh.. that other guy.. FOR $3 MILLION A YEAR.

Thank you! That's reassuring for at least ONE member on this board (memeME). I don't mind bullet time, as it's a gameplay element more than a superhero power. I just don't want to see Thorton flipping over cars or shoot laser beams out of his ass.

Two new suggestions: 4870x2: http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/07...870.x2.in.july/ Water cooled 4870: http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/07...er.cooled.4870/

I understand you're a few numbers short of Pi.

Please let the "super-hero" part just be a figure of speech, as when compared to any normal human being, and not be actual super-hero powers.. I've definitely had enough of magic and paranormal bull**** to last me a lifetime already.
