The Sound / The Voices / The Music
mkreku replied to Pop's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
These quotes are kind of funny to me. I know Xard wrote that he listened to the music before even playing the game, but since he's Finnish I think it's safe to assume we can ignore that. My point is that I don't think there IS such a thing as perfect music for every situation in every game. But Rostere loves Baldur's Gate 2 and the music in it. Xard loves Planescape: Torment and the music in it. I love Gothic and the music in it. People in the Fallout threads say they love the music in Fallout because it was so perfect for those games (while at the same time scolding Bethesda for not knowing the perfect music for Fallout 3 which they usually hate already). Most people love the music in their favourite games and most people claim it was the perfect music for that game. But do we really love the music for the music or for the feelings they evoke in us from the entire experience we've had with respective game? I believe we learn to love the music in our favourite games at the same time we grow to love the games themselves. -
What the hell, why did I miss this thread? Was I on vacation or something? Staropramen Gran

Looks very smooth and kind of pretty to me. Even with the German dudes blabbering away during the movie: http://www.golem.de/0808/61473-4.html HD video for those of us way too lazy to download the German demo and still want to see the game in action. Oh, and the English release date is sometime in 2009..

You've just described the game White Gold! But good post. This is what I am talking about. Relatively small and compact yet interesting places that would make great backgrounds for games.

Your Top 10 Favorite Games of All Time
mkreku replied to jaguars4ever's topic in Computer and Console
Just to be annoying: Ultima VII was never released on the Commodore 64. The last Ultima released on the C64 was Ultima VI. -
One of the biggest draws, for me, with STALKER was the promise that they had recreated like 60% of the area surrounding Chernobyl. They even had real life photos to compare with and it sure looked lovely. Of course it doesn't have to be 100% accurate, but if you're able to recognize the main parts of a town it gives you so much more than trudging through generic town #23.

BREAKING NEWS: NEW EXCLUSIVE FALLOUT 3 TRAILER
mkreku replied to Llyranor's topic in Computer and Console
I actually like Bethesda's version better. Especially since they don't mention specifics and I doubt they'll let you get away easy if you KILL someone. I mean, the example is about puppies. Why wouldn't people be able to forgive you if you killed puppies? If you killed their family, sure, no mercy, but puppies? Just another example of this unreasonable "Bethesda did this, therefore it must be bad!" prejudice that's so prevalent throughout this thread. Tiresome. Anyhow, I now KNOW Fallout 3 will be great! Because the Babyfaced Assassin said so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5wW3GL5lyQ You need to follow MMA to be able to enjoy this video.. Barnett is a cool guy. -
Yeah, that wasn't exactly the most exciting of news. Especially since the name had leaked two weeks ago.. But they've said all along that the big revelations will come at the GDC in Leipzig, so.. I guess that's what the new counter is aiming for?
-
Yes, I realize the locations have been decided upon ages ago. Still, I thought it would be fun to read about what people would like to see in a game set in contemporary times. Taipei (or did you mean Taipan?) sounds cool (and will probably revolve around the Taipei 101), but Moscow and Rome aren't very inspired choices. Would much rather explore Riga or Nagasaki.
-
Ok, so the counter revealed.. the name: Risen. Also, instead of hearing waves we now get to hear bubbling lava on the teaser site. And the picture has moved closer to the volcano, with a new timer counting down two weeks from now. I guess that's when we'll start seeing the first screenshots from the game. http://rpb.deepsilver.com/

In another thread we were discussing something which made me write up a short list of places we'll most likely be able to visit in the game. But since Obsidian haven't revealed all the places we're actually going to be able to travel to in-game, I thought it could be fun to speculate or suggest places we want our spy to visit. For example, we've been in New York a billion times in a billion different games. Some games have even let us visit London, Paris, Moscow, Hong Kong and Tokyo, among others. But what about all the thousands of interesting cities in the world which we never hear about in any game? What cities would you love to see represented in a game? Personally, I'd love to see more smaller cities being virtualized in games. For one, you could probably fit most of the town's real architecture and map in one level without having to add the entire Blizzard team of world builders to do it. Second, it'd give people a feeling of real exploration knowing a place like this actually exist. I remember recognizing streets in London from all the games I've played there, for example! Kiruna, Sweden: Small mining town in the most northern parts of Sweden. The town only has around 18,000 inhabitants and it was founded only 120 years ago, but the actual town size is almost 20,000 square kilometers of tundra, ice covered mountains and tree-less landscapes. Incredible vistas, unique architecture and exotic nature would make it an interesting place to hide a super criminal in. Oh, and in the winter it's night 24/7 and the temperatures go below -30 degrees Celsius.. Would probably make a great place for survival horror games too. Bruges, Belgium: Small harbour town in central Europe and a Unesco World Heritage Site! The old town centre is small enough to fit in a game and features canals and fantastic architecture and town planning from the 12-13'th century. Absolutely stunning buildings, a harbour, narrow, winding streets and beautiful canals. What more could a super villain ask for? It even features a creepy 13'th century belfry! These are just two examples of a little more inspired choices from around our fantastic world. Feel free to add your own.

You guys should try playing Wasteland before saying anything about retro graphics. There IS a limit to what one can put up with.

BREAKING NEWS: NEW EXCLUSIVE FALLOUT 3 TRAILER
mkreku replied to Llyranor's topic in Computer and Console
I'm fully expecting a more role-playey (great word there) STALKER. If it manages to bring me back into the Fallout/Wasteland mood, even better. I don't expect it to be able to do that though. It can still be a good game, despite not being what everyone wishes it to be. -
Are you serious or are you joking..?

Has Xard found his werewolf..?

If you don't like the core gameplay, why do you play the game? Some games are worth playing despite their flaws. I'm a fan of the Gothic series and Boiling Point.. If combat doesn't give the player anything, except a chance to die, combat becomes a road block; nothing but a nuisance. If you have a chance to at least gain a level every once in a while, it'll lessen the road block syndrome and make the combat feel more meaningful. Add in the off chance you're going to find a new piece of equipment and you're even one step higher on the reward ladder.
-
No, it doesn't. I got stuck when having to do some sort of autopsy and the game totally lost me. I've tried to pick it up after that, but it just doesn't pull me in anymore. Also, some of the quests seem to be broken. I have lots of crap in my quest log for quests that are impossible to complete and stuff like that annoys me to no end. Probably also one of the reasons why I lost interest in it.

If I like the game (combat system, character progression, "feel", etc) and the game's system allows it, I wouldn't mind paying for an additional town or two. You know how it's been said that we can fly to different destinations in the world? Well, what if we're actually able to walk into an airport in the game and the DLC would appear as a new flight destination? Instead of just having Hong Kong, London, Paris, New York (the usual suspects), you'd be able to download Reykjavik, Helsinki, Cape Town, Auckland, Montevideo (the not so usual suspects)? I would gladly pay for that, if the game itself is good. I've actually always wondered why noone's ever done this already.. For example, make a seamless space combat game in a huge universe and equip the player and his ship with RPG elements. Let players trade, fight space pirates and land on planets and explore them and solve quests. Ship the game with 10 or so different planets and then sell additional planets/derelict space stations/star systems for the players who feel the game is worth it and want more. I could see myself play such a game for a long, long time.

I'm not. Usually when you only get experience from quests and/or when the developers lets you, the game becomes to controlled and "progression linear". Also it tends to make combat seem like a chore rather than a fun part of the gameplay with a reward at the end. It would work in a free-roaming game with hundreds of side-quests, but in a game like Bloodlines it's just another factor that makes the game un-replayable for me. Wasteland still has the best character progression system I've seen. It was a hybrid of learn-by-doing and levelling up. The way it worked was that you gained experience from the usual fighting, exploring and solving quests. When you gained a new level, you radioed in to headquarters and they gave you a new military rank (level) and you gained two skillpoints (or something like that). You were free to spend those skillpoints as you saw fit. But you also had hidden experience points for each and every skill, and the more you used your skill the more experience points you got and seemingly at random your skill would level up by itself. It was deeply satisfying. Anyone who've gone head to head with the Scorpitron, armed only with AK-47's, know how satisfying it was when your full auto blast damaged the machine for like 2 hp, but your skill went up from level 2 to level 5.

BREAKING NEWS: NEW EXCLUSIVE FALLOUT 3 TRAILER
mkreku replied to Llyranor's topic in Computer and Console
When I click on a thread about Fallout 3, I expect it to be a discussion between people interested in the game. Perhaps by sharing links to different previews, screenshots or whatever. Clicking on this Fallout 3 thread is like ten pages of Jaesun mocking the game in every way, even with blatant lies about the game, and the same haters trying to trump each other in superlatives about how bad this game will be and how right they themselves must be for being negative from the start. And trying to disguise the bitterness by calling it care is equally pathetic. -
This thread would be much more interesting if people would just take a shot of their actual desktop and not post these obviously cleaned up desks. I want to see your smut, damnit!

By the way, when I finished Dreamfall I would have cried if I had been a sissy. Or Finnish. But it did make me feel something and I really long for a continuation of the story.
